All of JDs off-season O-Lineman are pure trash. I hope they were all on 1 year deals. They were on 1 year deals, right?
gvr was a 1 year deal. Believe McGovern was a 3 year deal and Fant was a 3 year but it was designed that the Jets could get out from under it after this year. He may play well enough to stick it out though it looks like.
I think all his signings this off season were essentially 1 year deals with the exception of McGovern which was 3 years with 2 years guaranteed.
We must throw out big money on an O-Lineman this off-season especially if we draft Trevor Lawrence on a rookie contact. It's a must especially if both Lawrence and Becton are already in place @ QB and LT. Ronnie Stanley of the Ravens. David Bakhtiari of the Packers. Joe Thuney of the Patriots. We sign one of these O-Lineman and our O-Line will begin to trend upwards.
I think it's better but not great. GVR has too many garbage plays in a game. I see him once or twice each week blocking nobody.
Agree. also think we need to move Edoga to guard permanently when things settle down. He will do much better in that role. With Clark in the mix and one more stud in the next draft we should see some serious improvement. Add a new HC and OC that can open up the game some and hopefully we are on our way.
Greg Van Roten was a 3 year deal, only 1 year guaranteed and just under $3.5mm per year. I’m not really sure what people expected out of him but that should tell you all you need to know. Anyone who hyped him, that’s on them. Money tells the story. He’s a place filler for a year and is cheap enough to stick around as a backup if necessary. The 4 million saved by going with him over Winters is rolled over for a better future. Becton is a stud at LT and an obvious upgrade. Future position player. George Fant is a 1 year tryout with 2 option years if it planned out. Only $9mm a year which is a nice price for a starting OT. Top of the line players at OT are making more than double that. So far Fant is working out at RT, and while he is struggling a bit at LT in fill-in duty, $9mm per year for a solid OT who can get by periodically at LT is nice value. He is certainly an upgrade over Shell, not only in RT play but in versatility. Alex Lewis was here last year, and he’s been ok when healthy. With a 1 year guarantee it’s just a tryout for him, to see how he does with a full season. I doubt he is a future player, but maybe. McGovern has struggled some in a new system with new guards on either side. He is a 2 year commitment by the Jets, and so far looks like the only swing-and-miss so far. The other players who aren’t great don’t represent commitment so I don’t consider them misses. Cameron Clark could be a starter by the end of the season, but only time will tell. He has physical tools that guys like Van Roten simply don’t. My hope is that they can buy a guy like Thuney in FA and Clark can step in. The starting lineup would be Becton, Thuney, McGovern, Clark, Fant With Edoga and Van Roten as backups. Also it would be great to get a quality developmental Center in the 3rd/4th round this year.
Sorta, Becton is better than any one or probably 2 guys we had last year. Although I remember thinking once upon a time Winters was good. Thought Lewis was too, I’m curious as to how much of this is the scheme. All the guys you mentioned who aren’t here are in another scheme and look better. Could be true of these guys. That said, Besides Becton and I think McGovern everyone else is on a 1 year deal
From here on out Edouga and Clarke when healthy need as many reps as possible. And I’ve heard Edouga is probably better suited for guard, so this works great! On a side note, we need to avoid USC guys going forward. They’re not all busts, but we seem to have bad luck with them
If you're asking this question you have forgotten how much of a mess the Jets OL was for the last few years. Is the Jets line good right now? No. Is it better than what we had in 2018 and 2019? Much. Both things can be true and we can still be screwed.
I don’t know if Edoga has the nastiness for guard, maybe though. He hasn’t played any guard for the Jets as of yet so I’m not going to make any assumptions. I’d love to see Clark but they do need to keep Darnold healthy, and a 4th round rookie may not be the best way to do that. If Van Roten or Lewis are injured we will probably see him play though.
I hear ya regarding Darnold, but we do need to find a way to look at these guys. By the time the year is over, I want significant time for everyone so we know EXACTLY who to and not to keep
They also really need to prioritize a Center. Very undervalued position and can really accelerate a QB’s development
Edoga’s size lends an obvious move to guard. However at Tackle he seems to lose more inside w lack of pass pro anchor, pad level & finish than so getting beat around the edge. In its simplest terms in almost never makes sense to move a tackle who gets beat to his inside further inside at guard. W the way he gets beat it would be a potential nightmare
Where do we rank amongst other teams in O-Line penalities? I remember during the off-season JD signed a bunch of guys who rarely committed penalties etc
Sign Quinton Spain. Just released by Buffalo after a dispute with the coaches. Started all 16 games last year. Before that he started in Tennessee. The guy is an NFL guard. Van Rotten and Alex Lewis both aren't, they suck.
