There are more than numerous mistakes in earlier regimes. And Douglass as well has made some bad moves. He let some OL go, but the replacements playing at same level or worse. Look winters, osemele, dozier, shell all starting for other teams. The level of play not good, I do like Becton, and maybe fant. But the rest no so much. Douglass let Anderson walk, and he’s having all pro like season while our WR group had only 1 legitimate NFL receiver. Rest are marginal at best. So mistake! Signing perriman mistake, he been hurt entire career literally. Khalil was done. Letting D Davis go to sign Williamson. Not good. We could go on and on, the bads seem to outweigh the good so far. I am JD fan, and he needs time, but certainly get the point, he has been mostly bad so far, but a few good things. He deserves some leeway. Unless he wants to go down with gase. Which he might. That would be his worst move!!

Look with our WR Corp and OL, even a HOF QB will struggle with this team as constructed. So bashing Sam is not relevant to me. Gase has never Played to sam’s strengths. It is truly a no win situation for Sam.

Great post, this team as currently constituted incapable of enabling QB success for ANYONE! Name your QB, they would suffer here.

The number of high-value free agent moves that get done after the second week of free agency is very low. Cap space is down, the players that might make a difference are already on other teams, very few teams let go of an impact player after they have set their roster at the start of training camp.

What you do get now and then are solid vets released during camp when a rookie looks like they are ready to go. These guys tend to have other issues but they can fill a hole.

Douglas made several signings late in free agency in 2019 to try to fill holes. Unfortunately none of them was a particularly high impact signing because none of the players involved were still impact players. If they had been impact players they would have been signed earlier in free agency or retained on the roster of the team that had them into the summer.

The first free agency period that Douglas had actual control of events was this year and he made several high risk/high reward signings, mainly of offensive linemen that other teams were not bidding up. Nothing he did this year was going to turn the Jets from a bad team into an average team. The talent just wasn't there in free agency to fill the many holes on the roster. Douglas did what he could on the OL and waited for 2021 to make major improvements.

In 2021 with some luck the Jets will have only one position that needs to be filled on the OL and one WR needed to give them skill across the field on offense. They will have 2 1sts next year, a 2nd and 2 3rds heading a 10 pick draft class. Again, with some luck Douglas will be in a position to add some depth in free agency and then draft with a free hand for talent.

We both know all about how free agency works and who is available - that's not the question. But holes need to be filled as they open up, they can't all be pushed to the future.

What moves did Joe Douglas do that affected the the receiver corps this year? That's the question. How's it working out?

I wouldn't be surprised if Sam goes somewhere else and becomes a good starter. Still, if we can draft Lawrence, we need to do so because of how talented Lawrence is and because we'll be able to reset the rookie contract clock.

Drafting Lawrence isn't going to fix anything unless the Jets talent goes way up around him. I'd draft a 1st round WR also and probably spend most of the early part of the draft on that side of the ball.

Fixing the defense needs to happen also but if we go halfsies on the problem we're as likely to wind up with holes on both sides of the ball as to have a solid roster. Obviously when you are grooming a young QB you don't want to send him out there with street meat because then he'll fail and when he fails the whole team fails.

Douglas was handed a really crappy situation, which is likely why he demanded 6 guaranteed years. It's starting to look like he thought Darnold (and Gase) were likely casualties when he came in the door. That explains not trying to front-load for 2020. That type of build would have had a low ceiling and a higher failure rate than you want when you are loading for the current season.

    1) Totally agree. Invest in the offense and consolidate an identity of a modern, functional team that moves the ball and scores. Play fast and relaxed on defense. The defense will be young and flawed, but if we can score points, they will be fiercely driven to hold their own. At the very least, this will be fun for everyone, including the fans, and not endlessly demoralizing.

    2) Here I think you're giving JD. too much credit. Disagree that he was essentially writing off Sam and Gase from day 1. I believe he did his best to provide support and weapons in the short term while maximizing potential for 2021 and beyond. He was not lying to Sam's parents when he promised them he was totally invested in keeping him safe and building around him. It just hasn't worked out.

I understand that drafting Lawrence isn't a cure-all, but we still have to do it. We can sit him and play Flacco or some other vet for a season if need be. As for Douglas, if you're right about him, he's one hell of a liar. https://www.si.com/nfl/jets/news/ny-jets-head-coach-adam-gase-praised-by-gm-joe-douglas

Yes, we need more talent, but as far as WRs are concerned last year Sam had Anderson and Crowder. Guess where Anderson is ranked right now that he is playing with Teddy B in Carolina. #3 overall in reception years in ALL NFL. Yes, #3 - among top WRs overall in the League, an absolute beast. What is becoming obvious is that Sam/Gase DID have excellent receivers last year, but made Anderson look pedestrian. Anderson didn't just break out at the age of 27. He was near 1000 yard receiver in his second year, but regressed with Sam and Gase.

Also, I watched washed up vet Flacco yesterday, and while he didn't have a great game, he had just about as good a game as any Sam had this year. And this is without Becton to protect and with same WR corps. While we need to see how season unfolds, given the evidence thus far, we need to go QB first and foremost in the draft. Lawrence is simply a no brainer at this point if we get this lucky, but even if we don't get #1, we need to see if there are other difference makers out there at the position, like Fields. Sam's stock has drastically gone down this year with his play, unleashing of Anderson with Teddy B, Flacco seemingly doing similarly with Sam out.

Gase is an absolute must go, there is no question about it, but Sam's ability to be a consistently decent starter in the League, not to mention a franchise, is also under a huge question mark at this point, there is no denying it.

I'm not saying that it's wrong to draft Lawrence, assuming we can just do it on the #1 or #2 pick. I'm very much against any trade-up to draft him at this point. We don't have enough talent to do that and we won't fix anything burdening Lawrence with bad offensive players around him because we (again) decided to cherry-pick a QB at great expense.

When Douglas came in the door he was going to say good things about everybody. That's what a new hire does and they do it because their arrival is a natural stressor on the team structure. Coming in and being a note of dissension right off the bat is likely to upset the applecart and leave everybody picking apples up off the road instead or doing the job they were hired for.

Based strictly on his actions over the last year I think you have to consider Douglas priorities as follows:

    1. Keep Sam Darnold upright.

    2. Give the Jets enough assets in 2021 and beyond to make a real build attempt.

I don't see evidence of any other guiding motives in the moves he has made.

The 2 items above are what you would expect any competent GM to do when handed the flaming mess that the Jets were in May 2019.

It just seems like a wasted pick. We need more elite o-line to build the team. Drafting a QB in the first round would just stunt the future of the team yet again.

Said no professional analyst ever. Sam was one of the best QBs of the year when he wasn't sick in 2019. That's hardly shit tier.

And this year the team around him is entirely shit. His play is completely representative of how shit tier the other players are on the team, not his talent. It's so blatantly obvious.

Drafting a quarterback with Hall of Fame potential is the opposite of a wasted pick.

and 95% of them never get into the HOF let along be even good. the draft is a crapshoot. Tlaw could be a tim couch like bust. even if sam isn't elite for sake of argument you can win a SB without an elite QB. you have to build a team around him.

your right. the problem is people on this forum are irrational. look at all the shit robby got. now he's top 5 in the NFL people here can't evaluate talent as a group which is a shame. they just want to fire and replace everyone which never works

Actually, he wasn’t. He was still bottom 10 Qb even with good games from Cowboys and Packers. This year, theres a good argument to make that he’s bottom 3. He is part of the shit tier of this team. He still can’t read defenses, makes horrible decisions, and flat out missing guys when they are open. No one is saying he has top tier talent but to act like Sam isn’t part of the problem as well is asinine.
