Thank you!!! "A picture's worth a thousand words", and a video highlight reel is worth a million at least!
Sorry, this is just false. Watch the two highlight reels that K'OB provided and you won't see the "yips" there. But now, his third year with shitty coaching and talent, and an abbreviated T.C. and no pre-season and now the "yips" are cropping up. And thanks again to K'OB for those clips because I had forgotten how many good plays he made, and many were of the type that Geno and Sanchez never made. The potential is still there...I think. I hedge because maybe he's ruined, though I doubt it. Get him a competent CS and some talent and he could win a SB.
Dude come on. We're using highlight tapes as a barometer? Everyone looks cool calm and collected and playing great in their highlight tapes.
Of course they do. But the point is to counter the lame argument that Danrold sucks, he's got hardly any highlights, etc.
Yeah, this pretty much sums up my views. Gase is a bad coach and should be fired, yes. But if you watch the games very closely it's also clear that there are numerous big mistakes by Sam almost every game that are solely on him. Missing open guys, bad throws into multi coverage. It's hard for any coach to coach those things out of a guy. Playing QB in the NFL is extremely stressful and high pressure. A good QB has to be able to process things at a certain speed and I'm just not sure Sam is able to do that. He made the same mistakes at USC and it's more difficult to avoid them in the NFL.
Further, I would add that most posters here readily claim that if we had drafted Patrick Mahomes, he wouldn't look like the same QB here that he does with the Chiefs. If that's true, then the abysmal coaching, lack of weapons around him and lack of protection from the OL would affect him, so why wouldn't it have affected Sam, who is 2 years younger than Mahomes and not as mature/poised as Mahomes?
Interesting thread...my two cents: first, Gase sucks out loud and should be fired...he essentially only has to worry about one side of the ball and really, he had one job: develop Darnold. He has failed miserably. He was a bad hire in the first place after flaming out in Miami and was nowhere near an “offensive genius”. So there’s that...whatever other problems he has, he has failed to develop a highly drafted QB who had potential. Fail. Next man up. second, Darnold has played well in spurts and poorly as well. Personally, I would not give up on him because I hate our coaching THAT much and I hate our offensive talent all the way around even more...no OL, no receivers worth a damn outside of Crowder, no tight ends worth a damn (like what the FUCK up with Herndon??), and no running game. That being said, you are ALWAYS looking to improve your team, especially at the most critical Position. If somehow we get in position to draft Lawrence, you don’t pass on that. Best case you have two QBs and can trade one...so you take him and either let them compete or trade Darnold if that’s the way they want to go. personally, I don’t think we’ll get that top pick...because Jets. but you never know...
Darnold's problems look almost all related to his footwork as far as I can see. As many, even his detractors, have said he looks great on the run and is accurate with it. In the pocket, less so. He has an issue over and under throwing deeper balls. This again seems footwork related to me, and it is very hard for receivers to be in the right place when they don't know where the right place is because the ball isn't delivered consistently. I've never coached football but I have other sports and it is quite amazing how some kids look completely different when already moving compared to when they are starting from a static position. Their body mechanics just flow naturally when on the move and don't when they are not. Sam seems to have very much the same issue. Fix Sam's footwork and he could be the FQB everyone hoped, if he doesn't then what you see now is all he's ever going to be.
I really think this is the issue with his accuracy. Sam never had great footwork and it was something that Gase was going to work on. Now he just looks uncomfortable and unsure of himself in the pocket. That being said they should call more rollouts, bootlegs, etc. to make him feel comfortable, as he's much better on the run than in the pocket.
Pretty much how I feel. The defensive game plan seems to be pressure Darnold, and force him to throw over the top.
That is fine but if you read my post before quoting it, I said it was to prove he didn't just have a good scramble every 4 games. Nothing to do with Geno Smiths abilities or lack of them as it turned out. I'm sure i said we would be picking Lawrence with the one pick but without double checking myself that may have been another post lol
Dude the point was he has more in his locker than a scramble as the other guy was claiming. That is all, posts have to be taken in the context they are posted in. Also, i am sure you see him throwing over the middle in those vids, something he seems to shy away from now. Lad is ruined, we all know it really.
Well - that's further to the point. If he's ruined then fans can move on as he's not the guy. I just don't think him making some really good players over the past couple years makes up for the fact that he's finished top 10 in interceptions his first two years (despite only 13 starts), and he now looks like Geno (scared) in the pocket.
Unfortunately, I think he is but I can also see that he had a lot of promise, a promise that is eroding away at a rapid rate, can that be fixed by a better set of coaches? He is 23yo Mayfield was 25yo when he was drafted (I believe, on my phone so not going off to double check lol) so in theory he has 2 years to mature and relearn what he has stopped doing. Like I said earlier I don't think he gets that chance, it looks likely JD maybe didn't fancy him as a QB and the team he has put together this season isn't screaming a contradiction. I feel sorry for the kid as he has shown some nice moves, had good games but a lot of simple faults remain the same currently. Be interesting to see what happens tbh
Honestly, I think the age thing is overrated by fans here. I wish it wasn't, but regardless of his age he has three more years of bad habits and experience that has proved poor results. I hope I'm wrong. But people can hate Gase all they want - they're crazy if they think Gase and Bates + friends didn't rep it with him in practice like crazy. The problem is that fundamentals for quarterbacks break down if they feel pressure. Darnold doesn't look comfortable in the pocket and feels pressure at all time now. It's not just that though. He can't take a three step drop (no pressure) and deliver the ball on time, on target, on typical first and second down throws (not just over the middle either). The terrible running game doesn't help, but it contributes to us being in 2nd and 3rd and long when a first down pass play that should go for 4-6 is thrown two yards in front of the receiver.
If this has been brought up already I apologize but is there a bigger indictment of Gase's dogshit offense than him saying he doesn't have to change anything going from a young mobile playmaking QB to a statue in the pocket? It's almost like he has no idea how to cater to any of his players' strengths... I hope everyone is ready for Flacco to win a few games, Sam to continue sitting and Gase to get another year.
Footwork isn't his only problem. His decision making is also a big problem at times (not throwing the ball away, trying to force the ball into double or triple coverage, etc.) his accuracy (which could definitely be related to his footwork issues), and his reading of Ds seems to be a problem at times as well. I think that Sam is not a good fit for Gase's offense. It asks Sam to be more of a pocket QB and get the ball out quickly. That's not what Sam does naturally, and that can cause a level of discomfort, distraction, confusion, and lack of confidence that affects everything else and gets in the way of his talent. Since footwork was a problem at USC, I have to assume that the coaches there worked with him on that, Jordan Palmer has worked with him during the offseasons, and the Jets OCs/QB Coaches and Gase have worked with him on it as well. Surely he knows what he's supposed to do and that should be natural by now. The fact that it's not either suggests that Sam hasn't worked hard on it (which I find hard to believe), or something else is making him have to think too much and play in a way that he just can't relate to, and that in turn has him distracted and lacking in confidence. I believe that something is Gase's offense. I think that there's a very good chance that if Sam was put into an offense where he is a good fit, that isn't complex, that doesn't have a lot of quick or difficult reads, that he would be able to relax more and let his talent and natural athleticism take over. His confidence would return, and his level of play would increase greatly. OTOH reports from TC were how much more confident Sam looked, how he was in command of the offense, etc. If that was true, then something doesn't add up. I have wondered if Sam is too "nice" or too laid back. He doesn't seem to be tough-minded and a strong leader. If I'm correct about that, maybe it would explain why he hasn't been able to fight through the horrific OL play and lack of playmakers around him to succeed. Maybe the glare of the NY spotlight is too much for him and he can't take the pressure or maybe he just doesn't like living in NY/NJ. I can't help but think that Sam could and would succeed elsewhere in a system that's better suited to his style of play, with a better team around him, and better coaching, and perhaps not in the big city spotlight. Trying to be the QB who lifts the Jets and their fanbase from years of frustration and embarrassment has to put a lot of pressure on him. Hopefully, Douglas can figure it out, whatever the cause or reason, and make the right decision. It could be that Sam can still be "fixed" and be a very good starting QB for us, but it just might also be that the Jets need to move on regardless of whether they have the #1 pick or not. Depending upon how Sam plays the rest of the year, could be crucial in getting the next HC we desire. That HC and OC will have to believe in Sam and believe that they can fix him or they might not be willing to take the job unless Sam is traded and the Jets find a new QB. Because Jets, my fear is that Douglas and C. Johnson will decide that Sam is the problem and not Gase, retain Gase, trade Sam and then we wind up with a QB with less talent and potential than Sam, i.e., a game manager type QB.
The biggest issue I see with Darnold is that he is not comfortable in the pocket. That doesn't mean that he doesn't step up and make a good throw now and then but he clearly is not a good pocket passer at this point. The second biggest issue I see is that for whatever reason Gase and the Jets offensive staff are not comfortable with rolling Darnold out and letting him make decisions from the places that he is comfortable playing from. One of the reasons that Payton and Brees managed to resurrect Brees career is that both realized early on in their collaboration that Brees sightlines were really challenging in the pocket. They worked out a system where Brees dropped back laterally and threw from over the tackles instead of over the guards. Kind if a half-rollout if you will. It sounds counter-intuitive since tackles are taller than guards, however Brees sightlines improved dramatically from throwing from the edge of the pocket instead of in the middle of it. Brees had always been good at avoiding sacks when he was in the pocket and he got better at it when he was on the edge because it was much easier to throw the ball away from there if he had too.
