Here's what I believe. The Jets are going to keep Gase for the remainder of the year as long as he plays Darnold. They are going to show him support as they tank. Then after the season, they'll fire him. The only way he can save his job is to bench Darnold.
Precisely - we may as well give up if this is his attempt at a competitive roster and coaching staff. They're tanking surely
If it is not obvious that Douglas is tanking this season, then I don't know what is. He has stock piled draft picks. He traded away Adams for a king's ransom. He did not make any big moves in free agency. He did not go after big name wide receivers. This is a lost season and Douglas knows that. Let Adam Gase continue his tank and walk way after the end of the season.
OR(W help from JD) convince the idiot Bros. That Sam just isnt good or doesnt fit his system & that Lawrence/some other QB is who he needs. Ive been sensing this for a few weeks now.Gase is very good at indirectly projecting obstacles around him as the catalyst for his downfall.Injuries/tough opposing defenses, etc Have seen his body language & demeanor when answering questions about Sam missing throws..make no mistake he’ll be turning on sam if thats hos best card & the scapegoating will become all too apparent in the coming weeks. Will Christopher the horrible buy it? I think we know the answer to that, esp if JD joins in the fun
Funny how Sam publicly supports Gase, but it is not reciprocal. Gase will throw Sam under the bus in quick minute. That is why gase got to go sooner than later. That culture is ruining the team! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Remember when Gase was hired how CJ gushed about how Gase was chomping at the bit to work with such a bright young talent as Darnold? What a crock of shit! Gase didn't come here because of Sam! He came here because the Johnsons were the only ones stupid enough to hire him! In fact, I bet he was already trying to figure out how to replace Darnold because Sam's strengths don't align with the type of offense he runs (and god forbid he ever change his offense!). Darnold ought to look out for himself, and begin going off script because Gase is doing him no favors.
I agree this has been Douglas' plan all along, I just don't get why he would set up Sam to fail though. I would do all I could to make it easier on my young QB. I don't think Joe Douglas expected the Jets to compete for the #1 pick, but he definitely did not expect this team to be good either. You can tell he has had his eyes on 2021 for awhile. I'm fine with that, but I don't want to sacrifice Sam in the process.
Something to ponder: It may be that Gase's offense - despite its roots with Peyton Manning (remember that Manning was a shell of his former self when he was with the Broncos) - is designed to be able to work with any QB, and not be dependent on having a great QB. If you could design such an offense, you would be indeed a "genius" because it would eliminate the need to depend on the vagaries of draft position, or hoping to overpay for a top veteran QB (and the really good ones are never available anyway), and then having to devote the biggest chunk of your cap space to one player. Then further consider that Douglas came from the Ravens school, a team that up until Lamar, has never really depended on the offense or the QB to win. Remember, they didn't have to trade up to get him either. If you look at this picture you can see where Douglas and Gase (and the Johnsons) might all be on the same page, and that page doesn't include spending big money on a QB. So if you're current dream is "tank for Lawrence", you might well be very disappointed. Also, if - like me - you really want Gase fired, again you might be very disappointed because he might just be carrying out the master plan they've all agreed upon. Scoff if you will, but I'm thinking this is actually what best explains what we see with our own eyes. Speaking for myself, if this IS their Master Plan, I won't be around to see if it works.
That could not have been Gase's sales pitch to get the job though. He got it to make Sam an elite QB and he has failed in every way doing that. When Douglas was hired, he got a 6 year deal and I am sure told the Johnsons he was going to build the team the right way and it would take some time. I think most fans are fine with that. I think Christopher Johnson thinks Gase is a genius because he himself knows nothing about football, so hearing Gase talk about it sounds wise. I think Gase knows a lot about football too. He is just terrible at leading a group of men, calling plays he hasn't scripted, adjusting, being accountable, and almost every other detail a Head Coach needs to succeed in the league.
If the Jets were a playoff team, I don't think Douglas would make any big moves in FA. That's not how Ozzie Newsome built the Ravens. Further, Douglas has seen how those kinds of moves have screwed the Jets, and he's seeing it again now with Mosley. He might try to sign Ngakoue next offseason since the Jets so desperately need an edge and probably won't be able to get one in the draft. I think he would be the exception rather than the rule, however. I think Douglas will mostly sign young, cheap players for depth/competition and STs and some 2nd tier guys who can start or push for a starting position.
I think hes gotta make one legit signing or trade. The 2nd tier signings have not moved the dial for many yrs for this team. You cant move your 2 best players, pass on young guys who couldve helped at crucial spots, point to all the cap space next offseason & not do anything to improve the team but bring in warm bodies. This team will be built Through the draft but JD kind of painted himself in a corner by Carrying over all the cap space. He needs one move to solve one of the trouble spots & to give this team credibility.
That's why I said he might sign Ngakoue. Hopefully, you're right and I'm wrong, and he'll also sign a younger WR who is very good. I just don't want any more older (28 or older), big name, big contract FAs. Even with some players being able to play well into their 30s and even 40s, those kinds of signings have NEVER worked out for the Jets.
At least 1 WR and OL. The 2nd tier signings haven't moved the needle because there are few tier if any tier 1 players on the team. We're essentially asking McGovern, Fant, Desir, etc... to be stars.
I think shoring up the OL w. One high end guard under 27 would go a long way & give us some flexibility in the draft. Other than that as you said a WR or a CB. I still am petrified that JD is just another GM who doesnt value or prioritize WRs on draft day,so maybe adding a legit weapon via FA makes some sense.
Elflein and either Smith Schuster or Robinson would improve the offense. For CB, I'm not sure there's an appealing option out there. I looked at spotrac and the top FA CB's are in their 30's.
here is the issue with the above, Manning was still one of the smarter qbs around and this system has failed 4 or more qbs since then. Tannehill, Sam, the 2 backups we had last yr the Bears qb that followed him to Miami and I am sure I am missing another one or 2 Miami qbs. At what point is it the system and the coach and not the players?
Crowder getting hurt and Mims having a combination of rookie yips and injuries are what sealed the Jets into this horrid start. They'd be 1-3 anyway at this point without those two factors but losing the two highest skill set receivers for most of the first quarter really did Darnold in. Throwing to guys who are essentially street-meat over-achievers is not what Darnold needed at this point in his career. Now add in that the TE's are under-achieving as well and the RB with the most carries is 99 years old and you have the disaster that we've been seeing on the field on offense this year. The Jets held the 2-5 of clubs coming out of camp and their hand has gotten worse and worse since then. You can't bluff your way to wins in the NFL.
Sam is not the answer. End of story. I was all for him being a franchise QB, but you can't coach what is not there. Sam is making the same mistakes he made in his rookie year. He has people to throw to and he has a better offensive line. He looks like dog shit and that's on him. It is time to accept that he isn't the guy
