Come on that's ridiculous! There isn't even the slightest chance this goes down! Why would we trade our defensive leader for an injury-prone RB? Vilma might be one of the top 5 MLBs in the game.
RBs are dime a dozen, NO WAY do we trade Vilma for portis, especially when our running game isn't bad, and Vilma is the leader of our D.
When Rob says not to trade for a stud young running back then you have to agree with him... He has a hard-on for running backs, and for him to pass this up... I'm sold.
I would cry myself to sleep for the rest of my life if this trade went down.I'm a big fan of Portis but there's no way I trade Vilma for him.
Portis carried the skins on his back to the playoffs last year, he was far from average, he was one of the top 3 or 4backs in the league last year. If you think Martin is a HOF back than Portis is a mortal lock for it. Vilma was pushed around last year and has been pushed around this year. He may be a near great Middle Linebaker in the 4/3 where he is clean of the OL and has the ability to pursue but he is at best average in the 3/4 where his speed isn't as utilized and the need for a big LB who can take on the OL and not back up is more important. Tough call on this one but I believe we can replace Vilma a lot easier than we can come up with a back of Portis's caliber. The fact is the Jets are rebuilding and LB, QB, DL and running back all need to be addressed and not all in the draft. What we can do in FA and what they think Clemens can do will have a lot more to do with whether or not this is a good or bad move.
1) If Portis makes the Hall Of Fame then Betts must be the best RB in the history of the NFL 2) Portis was a Top 3 RB last year in YOUR opinion. Thats not a fact. Tomlinson, Barber, LJ, Alexander, James etc. were all better than him so i dont know what you mean by "he was a Top 3 RB" because he clearly wasnt. He gets outproduced by a 3rd string RB, thats all i need to know.
I doubt this would happen, but anyone who knocks Clinton Portis, is absolutely retarded. He is one of the fastest starting runningbacks in history, up until this year in which he was injury plagued. He has excellent speed and splits a hole very quickly. Winston makes some excellent points about Vilma struggling in the 3-4, although I think he's a smart enough player to eventually figure it out, and succeed just as Ray Lewis did. You gotta give a guy more than a year in a system, especially one as complex as the 3-4, and let him digest it. If he struggles next year, then I wouldn't be surprised if we got rid of him. It's just funny, that Jet fans see flashes out of a player early, and they can't admit when that player struggles. Then when brought up about being dumped or traded for an even better player, that player sucks.
I normally don't like dealing for RBs who have been in the league a few years, but you'd seriously have to consider this deal...
How many times do we have to go through this "his Denver stats looked very impressive" crap again? How many times do we have to tell you guys its because of their O-Line, not because of Lord Portis? I dont care how his stats in Denver looked like. Look at how he's done in Washington...which brings me back to my question: Why is he ("superstar") getting outproduced by a pathetic 3rd string RB? Why does this 3rd string RB look like Tomlinson compared to Portis who looks more like Barlow right now?
You guys are underrating C-Port. Granted this guy is one of my favorite players in the NFL(Vilma too), but this is his 1st major injury. Hes a beast who has an incredible burst and mostly is a powerback. Hes great with the media too and can be a team leader for sure. Not to say Vilma isnt either but you get what Im saying. I agree I wouldent do this deal, nor would Washington because of salary cap reasons(Wsh has enough Cap probs already) but to say Portis wouldent be great in NY is crazy. Hes what we need in a RB and hes not a system back like many people thought he was when in Denver.
As for Vilma, he needs help in the frontline. We all know this, hes got not protection what so ever so thus his stats dont show up as good.
It's fine to say the Denver OL was a big reason for his success there, but you can't discredit him in the same sentence for what he's done in Washington. He's had a 4.1 YPC in Gibbs' Washington system, which is a HORRIBLE fit for him. In a neutral system (which I believe the Jets would be), I think it's fair to say he'd be somewhere in between his 5.5 YPC in Denver's great system and 4.1 YPC in Washington's horrible system. Oh yeah, and Ladell Betts is a much better fit for Gibbs' power running game. That's why he looks so good. Betts is a great fit for Gibbs' system, just like Portis (and many other RBs) was a great fit for Denver's system.
Lets be fair to Clinton please, hes in arguably the toughest offensive scheme in the league(Al Saunders has like 10000 plays in his arsenal) and its his 1st year in this. It doesnt help he gets injured in preseason and couldent bounce back from it. Also with no more Old Man Brunell, Portis can become a better recieving threat now. Campbell is a treat to watch though he makes young mistakes.
