Portis? I wouldnt even want him if he was a FA. He's too expensive and wouldnt make a big difference behind our O-Line. He will probably end up just like Edge James in Arizona.

What has this league come to, when this is old?

Which is SEVEN MONTHS older than the young Jonathan Vilma.

he averages about 350 touches/season (over 5 years). to me that makes him already 30 years old. no thanks.

That's impossible, the Jets have a better OLine than Arizona.

I'm very very intrigued with Portis, I love the guy. Tough runner with great speed and only 25...

BUT...You simply can't give up on Vilma after 14 games, he hasn't caught the system yet, but when he does he'll be fine, I hope...

I gotta admit though...When I saw the topic I flinched and thought about it for about 10 seconds...

Why would we trade Vilma for a RB who is good but always injured? Plus we have a very good chance of getting a Good RB in the draft. & another thing looks like Mangini likes to have RB by commitee system, So I don't see it happening

The Jets would probably be better off next year with a FA LB and Portis then with Vilma and a FA RB but from a value perspective I don't like the trade much. I think this is a trade you make if the team is or is on the cusp of being a SB contender and I don't think the Jets are there yet.

I look at the deal solely from the perspective of the value added by acquiring a great player. Teams never hurt themselves when they acquire a great player in early primetime which is where Portis is now.

That was why the Curtis Martin signing was such a huge thing for the Jets, they got a 25 year old star and melded him into an already functional offense. The result was 12-4 and a date in the AFC Championship game.

What we would be giving up is substantial but let's face facts here. Jonathan Vilma is not Brian Urlacher, he's not Ray Lewis, he's not even Mo Lewis. While I recognize that he's a very good player, he's not a superstar and he never will be. If he was 15 pounds heavier and as fast as he is now he'd be Mo Lewis all over again and then there'd be a question of whether or not you let him go if a superstar is offered in return.

If I thought as highly of Portis as you did I'd probably agree with you, but I certainly don't think he's a top 3 back in the NFL.

This has to be the dumbest thing i've read in a while. Talking about "facts" and then he comes up with crap like "he never will be this and that" but on the other side you have Portis who's been average in Washington but accoring to you he's already a superstar. Heck, even Ladell Betts is outproducing him. Jesus Christ. Talk about a fair weather fan.

Despite playing for one of the most dysfunctional offenses of the last 5 years, an offense that routinely has ranked in the mid 20's and worse in points and yardage, Clinton Portis has rushed for 3,354 yards and 23 TD's over the last 2 and half seasons.

The Redskins have had one decent finish recently since 1999. It was last year when their offense got up as high as 13th. Clinton Portis 1,516 yards and 11 TD's is why that happened.

You put Clinton Portis in an offensive scheme that is not dysfunctional and he is a threat to lead the league in rushing for a couple of seasons. The last good offensive scheme he was in was in Denver and he blew the league out back to back years.

What the hell is wrong with you people? Portis is one of the best backs in the league, probably #3 behind LT and LJ, with LT having a bigger gap between him and LJ than LJ has over Portis. We can't use Vilma anymore, and LBs are generally cheaper and easier to get. I would do this trade, and try to milk them for another First or Second, since they don't like draft picks. He's only 25, geez. He's got a good 5 more years, and probably a solid 2 after that, RBs usually don't finish up these days until around 32. I love Vilma, but if the Jets FO chooses to pull the trigger on this deal I will be behind them. I trust our FO now, we don't have a bunch of clowns there. They haven't let us down so far have they?

    1) The Redskins had one of the best O-Lines in the NFL the past 2 or 3 seasons (since he's been there). They also had Pro Bowlers at their WR and TE position plus Brunell at QB. It CANT get any better than that.

    2) Thats mainly because they havent had a great RB in a long time (Stephen Davis was there before Portis got there). And like i said, when Portis joined, they had a Top 3 O-Line plus Santana Moss, Brunell (who did a great job btw) and Chris Cooley at TE. And now he's getting outproduced by Washingtons former 3rd string RB Ladell Betts (who?). Funny.

    3) Again, those Denver stats are pretty worthless. Every RB looks good in Denver. The Broncos didnt give him up because he was soooooo amazing, trust me. Even an undrafted rookie free agent (Mike Bell) is getting pretty decent numbers behind that O-Line. And their O-Line is not even in great shape anymore...
