From another Jets Board: Quote: Reported on DC Sportstalk 980 , the "Sports Reporters" show, w/Steve Czaban, Andy Pollin and one other (one of their usual guats, but I can't remember his name). Discussion was re: the Washington Redskins apparant "abundance" at RB with Betts showing himself as of late. Now, this was CONJECTURE from the shows hosts and guest, but their claim was that the Redskins seem to deal with two teams more than any other, The Denver Broncos.....and the New York Jets. In discussing the issue, and of how the Skins can best make use of the "asset" that is Clinton Portis, they floated the concept that the Jets would be willing to trade John Vilma strait up for Clinton Portis. The concept being that both players do not currently "fit" on their teams and their teams schemes. As stated above, this was CONJECTURE, but educated and informed conjecture. So, how do YOU feel about this possabillity. Would you like it? Hate it? Discuss.
Portis is 25 years old. I don't think he is getting up there in age. He had a run of injuries. It happens. None of the injuries are terribly threatening to a RB. With that said, I'd still rather draft a true #1 RB or take a chance with Turner.
Leader of the Jets defense aswell. They are starting to mold together as a unit. Losing their leader could set them back a bit.
gotta give Vilma time. Lets see how he performs when we have a d-line that can some what free him up to make plays
I can't see a trade like this happening and I would hate it. Despite Vilma's troubles he still is the unquestioned leader of the defense and teams are always forced to look to put two bodies on him
Portis is an absolute beast but he also has been used hard by Gibbs the last couple of years. If the Jets could go out and sign Briggs as an FA from the Bears, I would take a shot. Right now I think the Jets aren't great at LB and it's one of the units that needs to be addressed in the off season. Getting rid of Vilma without a very solid FA replacement would be a mistake. If they can get a big time LB before the draft in FA I might do it.
Yes, if you have the chance to do this trade you do it in a heartbeat. Portis is a year older than Curtis Martin was when the Jets acquired him in 1998 and he's a better back at this age with a similar injury history. His current injury is a broken hand, which should have no impact at all on his ability to continue on his way to the hall of fame assuming other injuries do not intervene. Seriously, Clinton Portis is better than Curtis Martin was at 26. He's in the ballpark with LaDainian Tomlinson at 26. You do this deal.
Wow get that out of here. Vilma has had trouble adjusting to the 3-4 but he is still a leader on this team and a fan favorite. I think Mangini and Don Sutton will spend a lot of time in the offseason helping Vilma be a productive member of the 3-4 defense once they analyze why he struggles with it.
I agree with you that Portis is a beast and Vilma will probably be nothing more than an average undersized LB in the 3/4 but if the Jets are going to stay with Pennington we are going to need a big time D more than a running back who is going to be stunted in the short passing game we seem to be committed to. Portis thrived in a run first go over the top O which Pennington can't run. Unless the Jets are going to go in another direction at QB, we are effectively using the short passing game to give us the 4 to 5 yards Portis would give us on carries. Giving up Vilma on a thin and arguably average LB unit for Portis who in our O is likely to be a short yardage back doesn't make sense unless we are going with Clemens next year.

Clinton Portis is one of the three best backs in football, with only Tomlinson and Johnson ahead of him. He's a couple years younger than those guys too. He has three 1,500 yard seasons in his four full seasons in the NFL, showing incredible productivity over that span. He is one of the quickest backs in the NFL and is always dangerous as a swing receiver out of the backfield with receptions of 74, 72 and 66 yards during his career so far. If you had to pick one guy right now to take over the mantle from Tomlinson as the most dangerous all-around threat out of the backfield he'd be the guy. I like Vilma and I think he's a good player, even in the 3-4, but I don't think he's a hall of famer based on what he's showed in his first three years. Portis is going to the hall of fame and the top 10 rushing list of all time. You gotta take the great player over the good one even if you like the good one better. That's how you win Super Bowls.
I wish all this "trade Vilma" speciulation would stop. If he didn't improve one iota from where he is right now, he's still a valuable asset to this team in all the things he does. Why can't we just draft our own and farm him, why trade a valuable player? I still think he'll be okay in the 3-4.
Here's the other way to look at it: with a short controlled passing game Portis might get the 70 touches a year out of the passing game that has made Tomlinson a unique threat in NFL history. I see play action off of Portis bringing out the beast in Chad, if one exists. Pennington, Portis, Coles, Cotchery, Baker. Who of those 5 does not become a better player if Clinton Portis joins the Jets?
Again, if we can sign a top LB in FA which we probably can I have no problem go after Portis. Vilma is highly over rated in the D that Mangini wants to run but Portis will be limited against a stacked box that Pennington can no longer exploit on a regular basis.
