Honestly I have no idea what to expect. No open training camp practices, no preseason who can say? I think the Jets have a shot to win @ Buffalo. No fans help greatly I think. We'll see.
Allen was very, very good on intermediate throws. Probably top five or so in the league, stats-wise. He’s got a good short game. But he’s probably the worst in the league throwing over twenty yards. And he does it more often than almost anyone else. That’s a good combination for a bad day. But not uncorrectable, I think.
I watched KC destroy Houston last nite and they had the same limitations every other team in the league had. Granted, KC is starting at an exponentially higher level on offense than the Jets but I saw a offense in midseason form so there's no excuse for the Jets not performing at the very least on a competent level on offense. I have no worries about the D but we've gotten way to comfortable making up excuses why the Jet offense isn't where it should be.
There are more differences between the Jets and Chiefs offenses than I have fingers and toes to count them on. For starters, they have one of the true offensive geniuses in the history of the sport designing their playbook and calling their plays. We have one of the worst in recent memory. They have the best tight end in the game and know exactly how to use him. They have one of the fastest receivers in the league and a quarterback who has the time to unload a jeep ball. Their third best receiver would be a number one in our office. The list goes on and on and on. I know that the Chiefs offense is one of the most potent in NFL history but watching that game last night showed me how unbelievably far away we are. We don’t have the talent and we don’t have the coaching. This isn’t breaking news but watching Andy Reid plays unfold is a thing of beauty. So much movement and creative design to get people open and disguise the play. It wasn’t even closely resembling anything I’ve seen our team do in a decade.
I think Buffalo is pretty over-hyped going into this season and would love to see them crash and burn. That said, I trust their coaching way more than ours and their defense is very good. I think the Jets will take a few games to have their OL gel. Bills probably win this but I expect a pretty ugly game from both sides.
I also agree with this. I think the Bills were a product of having a very easy schedule and a great defense last year. They still have a great defense but the schedule is tough and they still have to rely on Josh Allen. If they have to score points, they are going to be in trouble. They just aren't going to have to score points against us.
What about the road team? Houston looked like they had no clue what was going on for 3 quarters. And that was against the Chiefs D which is worse than the Bills D. While watching last night, it actually made me worry more for the Jets' chances on Sunday. Buffalo has an advantage, not because they are at home, but because most of the guys played together last year. We will see how fast Sam can get on the same page with his new O-line and WR's. Might see a lot of targets to Bell, Crowder and Herndon just due to familiarity.
The Chiefs took the offensive game plan they struggled with last night and used it against their opponent. Ball control, long drives and wear down the defense. Run to setup the pass. The Texans should've been in that game. The 6 point swing before the half killed them. They also abandoned their offensive strategy of the spread offense and running out of the spread that worked on their first scoring drive and seemingly went to a down the field game. Why change? I understand you try to setup the next drive, but they should've just kept dinking and dunking their way down the field since it was there. It would've given the defense a chance to rest too. Sunday should be an ugly football game. If we can run the ball early in the game we'll be in OK shape. I doubt we'll have much success outside the numbers to White's side. Should be a Herndon/Crowder/Bell short passing game. I also hope we take some shots at Josh Norman if he starts on the opposite side. He got fucking cooked all year last year. If Mims or Perriman are healthy enough, they better be in the game running 4-5 streaks total to see if they can burn Norman if he's singled at all.
If nothing else, we need to be sending people deep to open up the middle of the field for Crowder, Herndon and god-willing, Bell. There's a reason Crowder caught 22 passes for 14 yards week 1 against the Bills last year. We just need to actually make something happen with those plays. I actually think the gameplan was solid week 1 last year but the missed kicks plus losing Mosley did us in. We aren't good enough to beat the Bills by marching up and down the field, we need slow and steady drives that end in points while capitalizing on Allen being a bad QB.
What a fuckin botch this rookie class is right off the bat. Clark, Zuniga, Hall and maybe Mims all on IR to start the season. Morgan won't play a snap this year. Better hope Becton and Davis are studs.
Right. We need to throw the ball deep for it to be a legitimate threat though. Sometimes a missed throw on a deep ball at least opens up the threat of it being there. Especially if Sam correctly identifies single coverage. I'm a big fan of throwing the ball deep against good corners right from the jump even if you're anticipating an incompletion. Show them it's there so they might play a little bit more honest. Our best chance is going to be feeding the ball short and let their good linebackers and run up to make the play (they're both great space tacklers). We then have to run the outside receivers behind them later on in the game with deep ins and stops and what not. That's the way to beat them I think.
Maye is going to practice, which is good. Glad Avery took a pay cut if he is instantly out already. and Mims is definitely an unfortunate situation. Not the way you want to start your NFL career at all. Crowder, Perriman and Herndon will be getting most of the targets, but if they are double covered, Hogan and Berrios need to step up.
Oh yea we definitely need to take some shots early just to keep them honest I'm just not expecting it to work. You have to chip away at this defense to get anywhere. Again I think that was a solid gameplan last year and it worked for the most part. We're going to have to hope Perriman 1.) makes it through the game and 2.) gets open because he's our only guy that is a threat beyond 20 yards with Mims not playing.
You need to time up front to throw deep crosses. The good news is we should be better at giving Sam time this year, and Gase loves long developing plays (even when we don't have the o-line for it.) The bad news is Gase loves long developing plays to get get a guy open 7 yards down field. I'm giving Gase the benefit of the doubt going into the season. But this game is going to reveal a lot about who he is this season. If Sunday gets ugly I can see myself raging at his bonehead calls and lack of preparation by the end of the game.
The same game the Bills led most of the way, forced overtime at the end, and were nearly in FG range to win it if not for a phantom penalty. The Bills made plenty of mistakes that cost them a chance to win, but it certainly wasn't an embarrassment.
He did have trouble throwing deep last year and hopefully he improves. He was pretty good in the intermediate range (top 10) and fine in the short range.
Gase has had the same playbook since his days in Denver as an OC. He hasn't evolved one bit. I have no faith that he's going to evolve now but the good news is if executed correctly with guys who can make plays, it should be ok. Problem is we have no talent outside.
