I see the exact opposite. I see a team that was underutilized by the Coach who wasn't aggressive enough. He ran Curtis Martin into the ground and didn't design any gameplan to work in Lamont Jordan or Chris Baker or Coles or Moss, etc etc etc. The TO ratio was down because we didn't take any chances in the play calling. And when we did...ala half-back option against Ravens...they were ill-conceived in timing and poorly executed...that is a reflection on the coach. Uhh, Larry Johnson has run for over 1500 yards and 13 rushing TDs through 14 games. 2 of the Chiefs 4 Pro Bowlers are offensive lineman. Where is the struggle on the OL? I just don't see it and the facts don't support your assertion. He has a 4 Pro Bowlers. He has arguably the 2nd best RB and 2nd best TE in the league. His QB has a lifetime rating of 87.6 and has averaged almost 25 TDs and a 92 QB rating the past 4 years. How much more talent do you want?
Wrong --- Larry Johnson has run for 1500 yards and 13 rushing TDs. 2 Chiefs lineman are going to the pro bowl. Where is the weakness? Please show it to me, cause it isn't there.
Johnson's yards per carry has gone from 5.2 down to 4.3. He's getting alot of yards because they have run the ball alot because they can't protect the QB. They have given up 36 sacks despite throwing the ball very little this year (near the bottom of the league in terms of pass attempts).
The facts are quite simple to me. Herm is a decent head coach. You can make up excuses, give your crazy reasons, spin it any which way you want, and yet Herm will still be right there in the middle of the pack. Until he learns to grow a sack, he will never be able to take it to the next level, and I am not just talking about his offensive and overall game philosophies. I am talking about his handling with veterans and young players. He is a former player and is too "old-school". He let's veterans run over him when they want (See Ty Law). Herm has to wake up and realize that you have to develop youth in today's NFL game to mix with the veterans in order to win it all (Jerricho Cotchery, were you even on this team when herm was here?). Relying on your veterans too much and babying them will never get you that superbowl, it simply won't happen. Developing your draft picks and playing them like our HC is currently doing is the best way to make a run for it all. Basically, Herm is a fine coach if you like decent, competetive football. He is a fine coach if you like just getting by. He is a fine coach if you feel alright settling for 2nd place. And he is certainly a fine head coach if you like being stuck in the abyss of mediocricy.
Get your facts straight. Green and Huard have combined for the 394 ATT - good for 17th in the league. That isn't "near the bottom", that is the middle. As for their sacks, they have a total of 35 for the year. Last year Green was sacked 32 times with 502 ATTs. For the record, 7 of KC's sacks came in the first game of the year. As for Johnson, he isn't running any more this year than he did last year. Last year he carried the ball 336 times...and Priest Holmes had 119 carries, both of them combining for 455 carries. This year Johnson has shouldered the load by himself and is on pace for 402 carries...less than last year. So for you to say that KC is "running the ball alot because they can't protect the QB" doesn't hold any water. If anything they are running the ball less this year than they did last year. Plus you haven't taken into account that this is Johnson's first full year carrying the load by himself and that there is a new offensive coordinator. I would be interested to see the "types" of running plays called by Herm & Co...how many dive into the packs were there that we as Jet fans are so used to?
I think what people really overlook about Herm is his uncanny ability to know when his players need a pat on the back or a break from the action. You have to admit, it takes balls of steel to let some defenders sit on the sideline during a playoff game even if it leaves you short handed for a couple of plays. Time will tell if Mangini will be brave enough to do that.
And through all that you still can track Jonathan Vilma's tackles beyond the line of scrimmage? Color me impressed.
I don't know where you are getting your stats, but the Chiefs have attempted 401 passes - 27th in the league. If you don't bother getting your fact straight, why bother?
Junc, That first pargraph is a classic my friend. How would you come to that conclusion? Did the Jets get their hall of fame rb back this year? Are the Jets starting two rookies on the front line? Junc, I know how hard you are rooting for the Jets and Mangini. With that said, the thing that confuses me the most about people that defend Herm is this. Are you trying to seriously tell me...seriously...that you cant see the difference between a Herm Edwards coached team/GAME and Mangini? Forget the stats..forget the records...can you sit there and seriously say that you cant see the difference with how this team is prepared and the gameday management? Its the obvious turnaround since Kotite/Parcells. I would be devastated if the Jets dont make the playoffs this year but one thing I will remember about this season is that it was just a lot of fun to watch a football game again...and not worry about the flat out stupidity on the sideline. I have a tough time believing anybody on this board that says they cant see a HUGE difference from a coaching aspect. HUGE.
Maybe the carries are close to the same..but for Herm, there is no defense on how he has put the wheels in motion to destroy another running backs career because his failure to trust backups. See Lamont Jordan...end of story. Johnson will finish with 20% more carries then last year.
Trying to guesstimate the Jets record if Herm was coaching is illogical. There are way too many factors that would cancel out any reasonable projection. One is you'd have to assume Bradway is still running things. Is Bradway spending 2 first rounders on O-linemen? Is Mawae still here? Is Cotchery starting? We certainly wouldn't have Leon Washington. You just can't do that
Exactly..so the next best bet is to study the film...refresh the games back in your head. Ask yourself the following questions. They are difficult...so print this out and get back to me. 1. How many remote controls have you gone through this year..compared to the last 5 years. Take the 5 year answer and divide it by 5. 2. How many times have you cursed at the tv because we were out of timeouts or just didnt have that extra one to work with. 3. How many times did you see Curtis Martin running into the line of the steelers and look to the sidelines and get really pissed that Jordan was beating Cotchery at tic tac toe 3-2 best of seven. 4. How many times did you have to answer this question from your wife "why is the Jet qb taking a knee when they are losing...is that normal?"
The past is the past and we can(and have) argue about that until we're blue in the face. Let's keep this really simple, do junc and the others defending Herm think Mangini or Herm has done a better coaching job this year? No fantasy nonsense about if Herm was still with the Jets etc. Just based on their performance this year who has done the better job so far.
 I honestly forgot how nice it was to have a team with good clock management. Watching them handle those last 2 minutes of the first half of the Vikings game instilled me with such immense confidence and pride.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4180 Huard - 241 ATT http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=478 Green - 153 ATT Total for both is 241 + 153 = 394 ATT http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/statistics?stat=pass&sort=att&league=nfl&season=2&year=2006 394 ATT would be good for 17th in the league. Where are your stats from?
I panic every time we have a big lead in the 4th quarter, because Mangini is going to go into his prevent the win D. I still have nightmares about Tenn.
