Woody left the Pats at the same age Thuney is and with similar credentials. Neither was a star guard but both wanted to be paid as one.

When Logan Mankins came up for renewal at the same age Belichik paid him the market price to stay and he turned into a star.

Say what you will about Belichik but he rarely makes a mistake on a second contract. That's one of the reasons the Pats have remained very strong over the years. He will err on the side of caution by letting a player go to avoid having a big contract in the room that is not warranted. Nothing hurts a locker room more than a big contract for an average player. There are no good angles for the team that come out of that look.

way too much for the RT. don't like this at all. hate the idea of going FA with your tackles. its better to go FA with the interior of the line.

if this does indeed happen - no chance anderson returns.

A couple 'lower tier' offensive lineman I'd imagine we look at:

T/G Cameron Erving (former Browns first round pick as a Center -repurposed under Andy Reid and played for that brick wall in KC)

G Ereck Flowers (again, reinvented on a new team that had the imagination to move him to guard. Was solid not great there, but way better as a guard than an overwhelmed tackle in NY)

T Jason Spriggs (former 2nd round selection for the Packers that couldn't get on the field beyond as a swing tackle bc Bulaga and Bakthiari. Was heralded for his athleticism if I remember correctly out of college - not a ton of experience but started some games)

C Ted Karras (started all year when the Pats center went down)

RT Matt Feiler (a little old to be an RFA but had a surprisingly great season for the Steelers - only two years starting experience)

T Daryl Williams (started for the SB Panthers team)

C/G BJ Finney (spot starting experience over the last couple years. Might be a good depth signing)

RT George Fant, LT Germain Ifedi, LG Mike Iupati (Seahawks offensive lineman. I lump them all together because they all have a similar profile - big bruising linebackers who struggle with speed rushers. Not a big fan of any of em but at least one will break free I imagine)

Might have to shell out some more money for an above average player, but Thuney might bring stability to the team like Woody did for those couple of years. If he wants to be the highest paid guard at an insane price, we'll have to move on.

I wouldn't give a plugged nickel for Iupati. He's pretty much done according to the PFF grades. His scores were in the 50s. Ifedi or Williams could definitely be possibilities at RT. Spriggs could be a possibility as depth LT and swing tackle. I think Finney is an RFA as well. I wonder if Douglas is considering trading for players. I'd be surprised if he was unless he is unable to sign the level of FAs he wants for the OL.

I'm not sure whether Douglas is seriously considering trading for players to fill holes, as I would think he wants to keep all of his draft picks, but thought this article was interesting and am curious what you all think. I like Jones the most from that list as he should be fairly cheap. Kerrigan and Lindner will likely cost more.

New York Jets – Offseason Veteran Trade Targets

Michael Meegan looks at four veteran trade targets for the New York Jets

Four possible trade candidates for the New York Jets at positions of need…

Edge, Ryan Kerrigan – Washington Redskins

The Washington Redskins spent a 2018 first round pick on Montez Sweat and are likely to spend the number 2 pick in this year’s draft on Chase Young. Kerrigan has been a very good player his entire career and only has one year remaining on his contract, where the cap hit is only 11 million. If the Jets cannot land a premium edge in free agency Kerrigan would be a guy they should go after, as his age and contract can likely be had for a day three pick. .

CB, Sidney Jones IV – Philadelphia Eagles

Jones has been a disappointment thus far in his NFL career but is a talented player who could benefit from a change of scenery and is tailor made for Gregg Williams scheme, as he’s a guy who excels in press man coverage with good ball skills. Joe Douglas obviously has a relationship with the hierarchy in Philadephia and targeting a guy like Jones who Douglas likely had a hand in drafting would be a shrewd, low cost move that could help the Jets fill a need.

WR, Corey Davis – Tennessee Titans

A top 5 pick of the Titans three years ago, Davis has not blossomed into the number one receiver the Titans hoped he could be. It is rumored his 5th year option will not be picked up as AJ Brown has passed him in the depth chart and Davis, who just turned 25 is someone Douglas should consider going after. A very polished route runner, who could excel playing with Sam Darnold. With Robby Anderson likely gone in FA, trading for a guy like Davis as well as bringing in 1-2 receivers in the draft would help Darnold not feel the loss of his favorite target.

OL, Brandon Linder – Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars have major cap issues with Yannick Ngakoue needing a new deal. It has been rumored they will be active in trading some of their high profile players to free up space. Linder is a rock solid center and someone the Jets should aggressively pursue. He has three years left on his deal with zero guaranteed money left on it and an average cap hit of 9 million over those 3 years. Linder has played both guard and center, so his versatility would be appealing to Joe Douglas. Signing Joe Thuney and Jack Conklin in FA is not a guarantee so the Jets should try to be creative in the trade market to help solidify that wall in front of Sam Darnold.

Todd McShay: Free Agents Will Want to Be a Part of What Jets Are Building

    Ethan Greenberg
    TEAM REPORTER

Long before Joe Douglas became general manager of the Jets, he was a student-athlete at the University of Richmond and teammate of ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay. The two have maintained a close relationship for more than two decades and McShay, a walk-on QB for the Spiders, believes Douglas will flourish in green and white.

"Joe is one the great people and I'm not just saying that because I played with him and he's a friend," McShay said at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. "I think what the Jets are getting is a guy who grew up the right way in football under [former Ravens GM] Ozzie Newsome and Phil Savage. They taught him the way to evaluate players and what to do and how to do it. The process is so important to him.

"He's so respectful of having people that he trusts and loves and having the right guys around him. He wants to bring in the right players in terms of leadership, toughness, versatility. He knows what to look for. He's patient in the draft. He's probably not going to move up and make a splash. He's going to move back or stay put and try to find a value like Ozzie did for so many years in Baltimore."

Newsome was in charge of the Ravens' roster from 1996-2018. Douglas can start adding players in his first offseason with the Jets March 18 when free agency begins. Teams, however, can begin negotiating deals with players who have expiring contract two days prior. A handful of media members believe Douglas will take a calculated approach to free agency like Newsome and McShay believes the players will gravitate towards the Jets because of Douglas.

"He's one of the great human beings," he said. "You want to work for him, you want to win with him and he's the kind of guy who if you're a free agent, you want to be a part of what he's building with the Jets."

He added: "You can sit down and talk to him for an hour about anything besides football and have a blast, a great conversation. The second you dive into football, he can do as deep as anyone in the league. I think the fact that he's so relatable and has the right people around him is going to the reason he has a lot of success."

Douglas' supporting cast includes Assistant GM Rex Hogan, Director of Player Personnel Chad Alexander, who worked with Douglas in Baltimore, and Savage, who is the Jets' Senior Football Advisor. The Green & White have eight selections in this year's draft and four in the top-79, adding a third-round pick from the Giants in exchange for DL Leonard Williams.

"Joe and his staff do a great job," McShay said. "They grind it, they know. They'll evaluate the players, they know what they're looking for. After the first two or three rounds, they're going to find guys who can contribute on special teams, have versatility, toughness and leadership. They're going to make it very known to the organization what they're looking for and what a Jet is moving forward based on this draft. I'm confident of that."

Away from football, McShay said he has a ton of Douglas anecdotes and shared a PG-rated one before jumping on air at Lucas Oil Stadium.

"He and I competed for the worst cars at the University of Richmond, at least on our team," he said. "My car had holes in the floor. He had an [Oldsmobile] Cutlass Ciera I think. I remember he was from Mechanicsville, VA and I always used to joke with him that we'd need a mechanic one of these days because of the two horrible cars we had."

NFL exec. on the Leonard Williams contract situation:

“They [the Giants] probably can't believe they got themselves into this mess.”

I like your thinking except for the kicker. That guy has to go. No way the Jets go into a season with a bum like him. If they have to draft one get someone better in there.

I know Jason Peters is 38, but I think I would rather try and sign him or Beachum instead of trading a 3rd for this guy. Peters because he's a constant professional, would be a great example for a young talent to come in and learn from.

I think all things being equal I would agree. But, the timing of the whole thing makes me think, if we can give up a 3rd and lock down the left tackle position now, I’d do that rather than wait to see what we can do in 10 days.

Doesn't he want a new contract? He's been pretty malcontent as well with injury history. I don't know if I want to give up a 3rd for that. Maybe a 5th to be cheap.

We can get Peters w/out giving up compensation and move Becton over to left side his 2nd year in.

Sounds like he was not happy with the way the redskins handled his cancer diagnosis. I’m not going to call him a malcontent for that. It’s not like the skins are a model of functionality. I’m ok with Peters with the same plan you’re stating. But there’s no guarantee we get Peters. I’m in on Williams because we can get it done now. A bird in e hand if you will.

Yeah I just don't want to get into a bidding war with the Browns on this guy. I agree about the Redskins, they make the Jets look like the Ravens or Packers.

I’m not getting into a bidding war. I’ll give them the Leo compensation from the giants. If the browns top that I’m out.

You gotta make that call with the Redskins, but I have buyers beware with Trent. this is the draft I would prefer to keep our picks should we want to trade up a few spots in the 2nd for a Denzel Mims or one of those 2nd tier receivers.

I prefer to draft an OT to anchor our OL for the next 5-10 years.

I do too, and I also wouldn't mind signing a stop-gap like a Jason Peters, guy has been a true leader in the locker-room can pass the tricks of the trade to our young guy on how to be a professional. For one year. Fix both tackles spots for the year, grab a few guards in FA and now you have a really good makings of an offensive line.
