Some good positive steps and we’ve given the bottom of the roster enough experience so that many will contribute next season.

Next job is to not waste draft picks, build a serviceable OL and get production relative to salary out of the higher earners. No more Trumaine Johnsons.

I still don’t think we match this seasons W/L in 2020.

But that was his last quarter, ie where he left off.
So the previous staff got him to that point. Where has Gase brought him?

This season was pretty much a disappointment for Darnold, so if that's all you got in terms of offensive player development :(

so you don’t think Sam Darnold got any better from last year? And you watch these games?

How did he get better from where we left him last season?

Do you think he looked good today even, playing the Bill's B squad?

I like Darnold, but this hopefully will be his most forgettable season.

Edit* this is a little off topic from the OP.
Good discussion for a Darnold or Gase thread tho..

As bad as the Jets were this season, the posters here were far worse. I hate to go all NC on you, but I'm considering it.

  6. 7 wins w this roster BEFORE considering the injuries is pretty dang impressive.

i dont subscribe to moral victories however. We are still in the thick of a rebuild.

you dont ignore drafting offensive personnel for a decade & fix it w a QB,offensive coach & a couple shiny FAs. The whole offensive side of the ball needs fixing

Which likely means another DL or DB in round 1:)

It looks good on paper but watching this team reminded me of a few of those Bowles seasons...not showing up for a few games...lost another few because of poor game management and lack of adjustments ....same ol

I mostly agree. There's no doubt however that the easy schedule was a big factor. Mostly, I respect the job that Williams did and the players not giving up. It won't mean much if Gase doesn't learn and develop, if Sam doesn't develop consistency, if Douglas doesn't prove to have a great eye for talent, and they don't build upon this season.

No. I don't have to respect that. Not a chance.

This season has been exhausting, miserable, and pathetic.

LITERALLY, I mean this with everything in me...

If we didn't have Greg Williams coaching that defense, we would've been up shits creek without a paddle. Without a doubt.

The biggest problem will remain heading into next season. I highly doubt Greg Williams will be around next year, the one coach who actually got the very best out of a very shitty situation.

People get so caught up in the fake feel good aspect of it all without looking at the real problems of this team and what is potentially ahead for this team. Who we will be stuck with, etc....

I don't think things are about to get better. A lot depends on, Douglas. Who, by the way, we don't know anything about yet.

I am the very opposite of respectful of this team, the very opposite of feeling good about this team moving forward.

    I'm disgusted.

Why don't you think Williams will be back? You think he gets a HC job?

With what he did for this team, given what he had, I think he definitely deserves to have that possibility come his way. I could easily see him getting a HC job after the job he did for this piss poor team.

Hell, I think I would feel better about Williams being the HC of this team over who we actually have at HC currently.

Yeah, I think there is a good chance for sure.

He absolutely deserves it, no doubt about it. He deserved to be the Browns HC last season IMO. They should have never canned him. I know the Bounty Gate stuff was so long ago, but I don't think he will ever be the HC of team because of that.

Great post. I respect the job that Williams did, and I respect the players not giving up after being 1-7. I also respect Gase's ability to scheme the opening drive, but totally disrespect his lack of ability to make adjustments during games or to his system.

To those of you who enjoy moral victories go enjoy. As for me it's about winning a Championship not moral victories. This season was always about developing Sam and Im sorry guys although I see flashes this kid has developed some very very bad habits under Mr Gase.

We also had a QB with mono for a month, injuries all over the place from day one, and a Swiss cheese OLine

Gotta change these things and we’ll be OK

For the most part he’s been running for his life...considering everything that happened this season I feel like Sam did pretty well

He’s still really young and not close to his prime years

It wasn’t perfect but I think with help along the oline and a top tier WR he’ll be a good player even with Gase

Anyone who looks at this season, the circumstances and the players who ultimately ended up starting the majority of the year, and thinks it's some sort of failure, has an extremely distorted view of reality.

We added four offensive starters in training camp, and finished the year with backup corners, inside linebackers, three offensive lineman, tightend and starting X receiver.

Not to mention losing Darnold for three games, but to a sickness that meant he couldn't even be at the facility.

We were 6-2 in the second half of the season once everything settled down and we actually found guys off the street we knew were starting week to week. It was a rag tag bunch that played hard as hell.

Everyone likes to forget that Sam also played with some other odd ball injuries (thumb led to wearing a glove all year, broken toe nail), and we lost our backup quarterback instantly when Darnold went down.

WOW! This forgetting the context of their 7-9 record happened even quicker than I thought! I figured in a few weeks most fans would completely forget the embarrassing way they lost to two teams that were winless, got blown out in several other games, and had to get lucky to win the games they did, facing backup QBs instead of good veterans, all against the easiest schedule in the league, and the easiest schedule they will likely ever have.

While there were a few nice surprises in players they discovered because of the injuries, they still have major holes to fill even if they keep all those surprises. And they discovered a few more holes in players they thought they could count on but can't, so more holes.

And on top of it all, unless the Johnsons give us a belated Christmas gift by firing Gase, we have to look forward to having him do exactly what he's done for four years: be mediocre at best.

Winning these last games did not change my feeling that this has been one of the most depressing seasons I've experienced. And no, it's not because I hate Gase, I don't even know him, and furthermore if he proved me wrong and became a great coach for the Jets I'd be thrilled. But what I saw this year not only showed me how badly the talent level is, despite years of top picks, but that the HC hired to coach them is just a bad coach. He is what his record says he is, and he's here for at least another year, and if the "feel good" of this thread is any indication of how the Johnsons feel, he might get extended tomorrow!

Good riddance to the 2019 season!
