I'm sitting there watching on 2nd and 20 and wondering why Chad isn't substituted for with a QB who can throw down field? I'm watching the 4th Quarter and wondering why Chad is still in there throwing dinks and dunks? Hey, I love Mangini, but the whole WORLD knows that Chad can't throw downfield with his smarts...and he can't either with his arm. It's just the reality, not a knock on Chad - the truth is he can't do it...period. So, if you were coaching the Jets, why not throw in Clemens in the 4th Quarter yesterday? If you don't want to ruin Clemens, why not throw in Ramsey - who if ANYTHING has a very strong arm? Pennington is just not a downfield threat. He's limited, and it will never improve. Look, if Clemens isn't ready, how will he ever be if he never plays? If you are Mangini and you are willing to substitute to use the strength of everyone on your roster, why not at QB? I'd even prefer seeing Smith get a chance than to see Chad run down the clock and have no chance....
Wow... I'd have to agree. But, going a little further.. It seems evident when Chad is having a bad game by the middle of the second quarter. I don't understand why he isn't pulled as soon as it becomes evident it is a "bad day" for Chad.
yea I agree with both of you guys. Mangini knows about Cha's downfield problems. He doens't pull him out because he does not want to start a QB contreversy. Honestly thats the worst thing that can happen in the Jets locker room if there is one because there isn't enough games to just change Qb's all of a sudden. It takes a few games for a new qb to get into the rhythm. Im guessing thats the reason. But next year should be a whole different story.
2 reasons: 1. Bringing in Ramsey late in the game to chuck deep ball after deep ball has an even less chance of working then just trying to move the chains. It's almost impossible for anyone to throw deep in that situation, no matter what kind of arm you have. 2. And while Mangini would like to act like QB is the same as any other position, it's not. QB is the leader of the offense, and in some ways of the team, you can't just shuffle them in and out, especially on a team like ours, where if we want to win, we need to have good qb play.
You don't pull your QB in the second quarter because you think he is going to have a bad game. Many QB's turn it around at halftime.
Not because I think he's going to have a bad game.. But, it becomes evident he is going to have a bad game. And, controversy exists when there is not a set way of things happening. Chad knows when he's having a bad day. I really don't think he'd mind if he is relieved as long as he knows he going to get a chance in the next one.
Do u really think that putting Clemens in would of done anything? everytime we put him in he just gets sacked. hes been sacked 4 times when chads been sacked 25. almost 1/5 the amount and hes played like 2 short drives.
I really don't know... But, as bad as Chad plays on his off days I'd like to have seen a lot more of the backups at this point in order to have a firm opinion on their abilities.
So what happens if Ramsey or Clemmens come in and throw for 3 touchdowns and 250 yards in the second half. Now you have a QB controversy. This may seem like an easy decision for you. Keep in the backup. However, Pennington has chemistry with his receivers and our best receiver is Penninton's best friend. That just creates controversey
I wouldn't see that as a bad thing. I really like Chad myself. I don't see the Jets intentionally harming him as a good idea at all. Even if a player is doing good it shouldn't effect real friendships.
forget the old fashion notion of a "Quarterback Controvery." You play the guys in the situation who can succeed and help your team win. Why leave a body on the bench who can help? I've never understood or accepted that the QB is the ONLY position you can't change during a game...makes no sense...
Chad has thrown plenty of deep balls this year. He CAN throw a deep ball, so that argument is ridiculous. People just want to see a QB throw deep ball after deep ball, it's stupid. He picks his shots downfield. Unfortunately, he doesn't throw deep often enough, but he is able to just fine. People put way too much emphasis on having a rocket arm.
Agreed. I think the inability to throw downfield can almost be attributed more to the playcalling than to Chad. The way to climb back out of a hole in the fourth quarter is to get 10-20 yard passes, preferably out of bounds to stop the clock. You don't just chuck the ball downfield every play.
That is so dumb. If you need to bring a different QB in for longer passes, why not let that QB attempt the shorter passes as well? Do you guys really think hitting a dumpoff pass is beyond the ability of any NFL QB?
Not only is the idea a joke, but then Mangini will have to deal with the starting QB stuff everyday. As much as i'd like to see Clemens, NOT Ramsey, Mangini is not going to want a contreversy, simple. A fans best friend is the backup QB. And lets say Ramsey does well on a long pass, fans would be screaming to keep the hot hand in, trash whatever Mangini does with the QB "rotation" and furthermore, have his players wonder who will be the QB each week, much less each play.
Wow this rediculous. NO.....DUUHHHHRRRRRRRR. STUPID! If you sub a guy in for chad they KNOW WHATS COMING!
Clemens came in yesterday and couldn't even get a pass off. That speaks volumes. Ramsey stinks and Clemens is not ready. That leaves one option at Qb.
