Things I liked: - Hiring Williams as DC - Retaining Brant Boyer as Special Teams Coach - Also liked the position coaches and the idea of having 3 coaches with prior Head Coaching experiences in the staff. - Loved that we were able to land Mosley. - Loved that we were able to land Bell with a reasonable contract. - Mac didn't spend money like a drunk sailor this time and didn't put Jets under any long term disastrous contracts. Things I am not a big fan of: - No matter how hard I try I can't get excited about Gase. Maybe he will be our Bellichick and Darnold will be our Brady but his personality scares me a little. Will he do a good job on his second job ala Bellichick? Who knows. At least we have Manning vouching for him. - Offensive Line is still not fortified. A little bit concerning but we still have time to address. - Still looking for that pass rusher. I know we will probably address this thru draft but would have loved to land another vet pass rusher like Houston. But overall, so far things are better than expected for me. What says you?
Outside pass rusher is with 3rd pick center will be in third with a corner back three holes filled I wouldn’t be shocked if the bring a vet center corner back. We will be close to a full team next year theyfinish it
Well said Brook! One thing I'm not a fan of is having a system where there's "two head coaches - 1 on "O" and 1 on "D", especially when they're both headstrong. I see real problems unless Woody/Chris/Macc have made it clear that in the end Gase is THE head coach. I'm also not sure, like you, that Gase was the right guy in the first place, but we shall see. He has the knowledge and experience to be successful, and maybe this time - like Belichick did - he thrives with his second chance. I hope so. What's done is done, but he had better have them contending to the very end. If they stumbvle and have another sub-.500 record again, he should be on the hot seat, and fired if a better candidate shakes loose. As for Macc, he really needs to nail this draft - like at least 4 strong contributors out of the (currently) 6 picks he has. Just getting his first pick and maybe one or two others isn't going to cut it. This is my "make or break" season.
the o line has been upgraded The linebackers have been upgraded The WRs have been upgraded The rbs have been upgraded Secondary is a push All in all not too bad. Getting Mosley and osmele really are the what makes the offseason better than expected. Huge gets
This may be a better question to ask about a month from now. The off season has been excellent so far but the draft hasn’t taken place , uniforms unknown, even the schedule hasn’t been released yet . As far as FA goes I’d have to say A - to B + range....
Definitely better than expected. It started off nicely with the canning of Bowles, Rodgers, Master Bates and rest of that inept staff (except for Brant Boyer). I was hoping for the firing of Mac too, but it was not to be. Initially, I didn't like the hiring of Gase at all, but as I heard him speak about the team and his plans, I grew less opposed to his hiring. With the hiring of Williams, I started liking the hiring, or at least being willing to give him a chance. With their decision to stick to the 3-4 D as the base, I became even more encouraged. I was also initially against signing Bell, but have changed my mind and am excited to see what he can do. Things I like The hiring of Williams The retention of Boyer The retention of the 3-4 D as the base Trading for Osemele Signing Crowder Signing Bell Signing Mosley Signing Barr Not re-signing Dozier or Carpenter Re-signing Roberts Re-signing Henry Anderson Re-signing Catanzaro Signing Trevor Siemian Re-signing Steve McLendon Releasing Crowell Not re-signing Skrine Not trading for A. Brown The Jury's still out Retaining Mac Hiring Gase Signing Bellamy Re-signing Qvale Signing Brian Poole Not re-signing Roberts and Myers Signing Brown and Compton Re-signing Sterling Things I don't like Not hiring an EVP to run the football operation Barr reneging on us Hiring Dowell Loggains Not signing another edge rusher like Barrett or Houston Not signing a C other than Harrison Re-signing Tomlinson Not signing Darqueeze Dennard, Bryce Callahan or Ronald Darby
Happy so far. I have high hopes for Gase and thrilled to have Williams. The painful memory of Casey Rodgers and Bowles being outcoached on the second half of every game still hunts me. If we beef up the C position before camp, and we draft a pass rusher + some OL youth Ill give them an A. Quite frankly I cant wait for training camp.
Thought Mac has done a solid job so far, but I really do wish he didn't look to pursue Barr and instead get some veteran presence at the linebacker position like a Justin Houston along with Copeland. Would've been a great mentor for the young pass-rusher. Could've addressed some other positions. However, Bell / Mosley / Crowder and Osmele are big time pickups. If he trades Lee for trash picks, I will be disappointed.
Mac's two main "accomplishments" have been things that have been served up to him by others: the hiring of Gregg Williams as DC and the rest of the league no wanting Le'Veon Bell so that Mac didn't overpay him by tens of millions of dollars. Everything else, from the head coaching search to the rest of the roster, he hasn't had a particularly good offseason. Certainly not one good enough to save his job. He needs to nail the draft in order to have a reasonable argument for returning in 2020, but we all know how that's going to end. He can't draft talent that doesn't fall into his lap after others have passed on it.
I understand your concerns about Gase. But look at it this way: As a fan base, we've had a very weak team for the last 20 years. We gave to go back to '98 with Martin, Chrebet, Key, et al that we had a lot of talented players. For the last 20 years we've been looking to our HC to 'save' the team. Every HC (Pete Carroll, We Play To Win The Game!, Man-genius, Rex) on and on. We had zero faith in our players, so we 'transferred' onto the HC. But now, 2019, we FINALLY have our Franchise QB (damn I love typing that!) We have a REAL defense that may get even better if Mac can get us an edge rusher. We have the makings of a great offense with Sam, the best RB in the game, Robbie, Herndon. So....we can start looking a bit less to the HC to be our saviour, and a bit more to our young, talented team. We don't need no stinking saviour!!!
I chose "as expected," but I didn't expect much because we are the Jets and our ownership and front office are terrible (historically and currently). I loved the Mosley signing, the Greg Williams hire, and the trade with the Raiders for the guard. I hated the Gase hire, letting all of the special teams players go, the Crowder signing and that we were not able to totally revamp the offensive line (which was my #1 priority). I also hate that we are going to be stuck with terrible new uniforms for a couple years.
What, you have seen them, get the pictures in the uniform thread right now. We all want to hate them asap, you selfish get!!!!
Well, they cleaned house in the coaches wing. Picked up a couple of decent players. Nobody got arrested (I don't think.) Nobody died. Glad I got this in before the uniforms come out.
Next to the Browns this Offense is fully loaded I expect 10 wins...period... Gase and Williams MUST be better than previous management Mac has responded to the hot seat...he knows he can easily get canned...in this offseason pretty well Bell Mosley Crowder ...all the big money better produce. More Trumaine J bullsh-t would send me into depression The Osemble hire was a nice surprise..at Draft and TC dropouts let's fortify the OL..With little chance of trade it prob will be Josh A at 3 It's getting better guys!
Well.... on paper the team definitely looks better on paper than last year; improving several units of the team, so until opening day kickoff proves us wrong, and Gase has a NYC media meltdown, I'd say it went pretty well
You’re a parody account at this point. We didn’t totally revamp the OL in an offseason that had maybe three top tier OL total in it? No mention of Bell? Awful uniforms before they are even released? I know I’m feeding the troll, but this just wasn’t even a good troll post.
In years past we have won too many Super Bowls to count in March and April and we know how all those turned out. This off season looks good on the surface but this is not the first time a Jet off season APPEARED to be good. Its a shame that we have to judge "off seasons" instead of "post seasons" and if its all the same I will reserve my judgement and let you know how I feel about this Off Season after they actually have played a few meaningful games.
So far so good. Coaching: Big fan of the coaches we brought in. Maybe in the minority, but I think Gase is going to be an excellent fit here. And love Williams. Free agency: Bell, Osemele (Trade), Crowder, Mosley and bringing back our solid players. Big fan of free agency thus far, love the guys we brought in and brought back. I am though still a bit surprised we went silent on the center market and OLB market after Barr changed his mind. Draft: This is obviously TBD, but I am rooting hard for a trade down. With it looking more and more certain by the day that Murray is going #1 the Jets are going to be in a prime position to get a haul. I am hoping for one here. The trade down would potentially change my assesment of the last sentence above. 2020: What I do like a lot is we should have about 50 - 70 mil in cap space next year at this point. We are in for another strong offseason next year too to build on this one. Overall: Team is headed in the right direction.
This one is definitely different. The offseasons you mention from the past don't include 2 years of building a roster. Just a free agent frenzy and building the entire roster in free agency. That is not what happened here at all.
