Out of 5 full seasons for Wells he's had 2 pretty good years and 3 mediocre to bad ones. Pelfrey and Heilman is a little too rich for my blood for him.
He'd take Green's playing time, I'd imagine. Problem is based on his 04 and 05 numbers he's not really much of an upgrade. He was good last year but went into the tank late and changing leagues and coming into Shea who knows. Wells home OPS is almost .200 points higher then on the road the last 3 years. He also tends to fade after the AS break. He's been inconsistent his whole career it just seems like too much risk/price for the Mets to get someone that may only be a marginal upgrade. One point in his favor I guess is that he's consistently murdered lefties, although he's been pretty mediocre against righties.
I remember backing Pelfrey during the season. Most of the other Mets fans hated him. Now they don't want to give him up for Wells! Also, the Mets and Yankees do realize it will be 2007 next season, right? Pettitte and Glavine? WTF?
We'll he sucked when he was brought up. He needed more time in the minors. It doesn't mean Mets fans gave up on him.
People hated Pelfrey? Were they very stupid people? Very ignorant, stupid people who don't regularly watch baseball or absorb knowledge? Guy is young and doesn't have a fully developed secondary pitch. That's all.
I'm having a hard time recalling the Pelfrey hate myself. Like FITM said pretty much everyone thought it was apparent that he wasn't ready last year and that was the extent of it.
Maybe you should check the definition of hate. Just because we knew and admitted that he wasn't major league ready yet doesn't mean we hate him. Hell, Jose Lima is probably the worst pitcher in baseball history, yet one of my top 5 favorites.
I saw Pelfrey's first public pitching session in spring training and have supported him as a Met ever since. I liked him in college too but he wasn't a Met yet so I paid little real attention to him. I like Milledge too. Like most prospects I think he may have been overhyped. Even if he stays I don't think he will have the same impact on the franchise that Reyes or Wright have. It's obvious that he has a great deal of talent, some maturing to do on and off the feild, and it's also obvious the media is ready to hang him out to dry. It's smart for Omar to shop Lastings and Pelfrey but at the end of the day I'd like to see him and Pelfrey get through to the pro team and get a full chance to live up to their talent here. Wells is the type of player I would deal those two for.
So, you're complaining about the Tom Glavine signing and you want to trade Pelfrey? I've seen Pelfrey play in Binghamton plenty of times, so he was nothing new to me either.
I don't think FTC complained about Glavine, but Cakes did, and he is willing to trade Pelfrey and Heilman.
