I'm liking the sound of him more and more for exactly these reasons. He sounds like a proper HC, not a good coordinator. If we were a couple of years down then road and Darnold was closer to being the finished article then he might even be my front runner. As it stands though getting Darnold to take the next step might be the more important consideration.
Agreed, I don't think he's that bad. The problem is that he's almost 64, and that he hasn't been able to hold an NFL head coaching job for more than 3 years, so I don't see him suddenly finding that fountain of youth and rejuvenating the team. I think McCarthy is the ideal choice if the Jets go the experienced HC route, mainly because of his record and playoff success. Marvin Lewis is a little under rated because he has never had a Peyton Manning or Aaron Rodgers to work with, but made the playoffs 7 times despite that.
Any chance we could update the poll to remove Riley and include some of the HCs that are scheduled to be interviewed by the Jets?
@Brook! are you up for another round of the poll? These are the coaches who have been linked to the Jets. Eric Bieniemy (Chiefs OC) Jim Caldwell (former Lions HC) Adam Gase (former Dolphins HC) Kliff Kingsbury (USC OC) Mike McCarthy (former Packers HC) Todd Monken (Buccaneers OC) Matt Rhule (Baylor HC) Kris Richard (Cowboys DB)
Just looked up some odds - seem pretty odd to me... Lincoln Riley +803 Kliff Kingsbury +1000 Mike McCarthy +1000 Jeremy Bates +1015 Eric Bieniemy +1015 Todd Monken +1015 Matt LaFleur +1015 Josh McDaniels +1221 John DeFilippo +1324 Bruce Arians +1324 Jim Caldwell +1324 Adam Gase +1532 Urban Meyer +2055 Kris Richard +2055
Call it what you want but McCarthy has a better record of winning than Kingsbury. Fact. He also has much more experience and has extensive time dealing with professional athletes as opposed to college kids. It's not even close.
Hello All, I haven't read through this whole thread (just through page 69), so perhaps it has been already been addressed. I am not a moderator. However, this is a football forum, not CNN or Fox News. The Jets have already hired two black Head Coaches so a HC's race doesn't seem to be an issue with this team. I respect most all posters here. Therefore, I think that from now on - anybody mentioning any of these words should henceforth be banned until a new coach is hired. Black White Racist Racism Trump Conservative Liberal Rooney - unless you are discussing actresses Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.
I don’t think this head coaching search is as black and white as we think. We don’t need an offensive-minded head coach. If we go with Richard we just need an OC that will be liberal with the playcalling as opposed to Bates who was very conservative. That being said, I would prefer an offensive-minded coach that can develop Darnold. That trumps all. How many rules did I break?
What the hell? How is Bates favored over Monken, Bieniemy, Gase or most of the rest? The guy is one year removed from being a QB coach. Can you imagine if they just promoted Bates to head coach and called it a year? I think that would drive many Jets fans to the breaking point. I feel like he has an 90% chance of being fired when the next coach arrives.
It's very easy to agree with. Connor said this as well, that he believes McCarthy with the Jets reeks of 7-9 seasons.
You can't possibly know that. And what if he's the John Wayne from The Conqueror v Clint from the Orangutan movies? Huh? What then? Maybe we just shoot for Kevin Costner from Mr. Brooks.
