That's saying he had no part of their success. Can't have it both ways. He helped make Rodgers successful by putting him in an offense and best utilizing his abilities. Can't blame the coach for not winning more with Rodgers and give him no credit for Rodgers being a great QB.
I am not saying he did not have any part in their success, but I do believe that the QBs had a lot more to do with the coach being successful than vice versa - you can point to the winning record but I would bet my last dollar that if Bowles or Ryan had had a top tier QB on their teams then they would have similar positive records - would that make them great coaches we would love to have?
I think of them together too...as guys who have no idea how to manage clock, like Bowles, and also as guys who take talented teams and mostly take them nowhere. McCarthy had a true superstar as QB and won only 1 superbowl with him. To be honest, I don't think the best Jets coach is in any of these retreads. Jets upper management seems to be focused on mediocrity for some reason, so I expect more of the same. Ron
You act like money is the only thing that determines if a candidate wants to accept a job somewhere. Maybe that's what you base all your decisions on, but not everyone does. Cleveland happens to have a great young QB to build around as well, and he's already playing at a higher level than Darnold. They have a quality GM and a lot more talent to build around. They have a good OL and several very good players on each side of the ball. I want one of the Harbaughs or McCarthy just as much as you, but none of them may want to work for the Johnsons or coach in NY/NJ and I wouldn't blame them.
So would you say no to Sean Payton? or Belichek? They had great QBs. Why is having a great QB some kind of knock on successful coaches? And I may agree that Rex would have been better, but do you really believe Bowles would have been 50 games over .500 with a better QB? Really? Lastly, do you think Sam Darnold doesnt have the tools and skillset to become a great QB? Still don't get your point
McCarthy over Caldwell is a no brainer I do NOT WANT CALDWELL ! In other news I don't think any of this matters because if you watched Christopher Johnson press conference yesterday ( I did ) you will NOT walk away with a warm fuzzy feeling in fact this guy might be a bigger PUTZ then his brother Woody and that is saying something ! If any of you watched it and can say that you walked away with any confidence or hope after seeing that mess I believe you would be lying. Someone else post it if its not up here already it is quite sad
I have always respected your opinion and we have agreed on many things, it's actually nice to have a disagreement that remains civil. While we may not agree on this, We'll always have Mahomes! Happy New Year. Hopefully we end up with a coach who is successful either way!
Agreed. The fact that he said two things - the team has talent and he wouldn't consider a coach seeking power is ludicrous. Even if he really believes that why would you announce that?
Per NFL.com Mike McCarthy's search for a new NFL home appears to be starting in New York. The former Green Bay Packers head coach is expected to interview with the New York Jets for their head-coaching vacancy, a source informed of the situation told NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. The development comes a day after the Jets fired fourth-year coach Todd Bowles following a 4-12 season.
Shouldn't most of the blame for the lack of a running game and defense go on whomever was the Lions GM?
I agree with your point regarding Campbell. We'll see if other top candidates turn down the Jets and if the Jets omit including some top candidates. I agree that the Jets should be a top destination or option for candidates looking for a HC job, but with the Johnsons calling the shots, all bets are off.
Even if McCarthy ends up helming the Jets and getting to 10ish wins, the specter of his awful clock/game management will drive this board insane. Most know it's been a decade-plus problem for him, driving Packers fans insane by costing the team points for years at the end of halves and games. It's a part of what finally got him fired this year: https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2018/10/18/packers-wasting-timeouts-far-more-than-most-teams/
Dear sir. In my opinion it takes both, BB without Tom Brady, Holmgren without Favre, Mac Carthy without Rodgers, Payton without Drew, on and on. You can make that argument about all the best HC. McCarthy could very well be the best possible choice for the Jets, short of going with an up and coming unknown quantity.
I think my point is pretty clear - you cannot judge how good a coach is based solely on their having a winning record when they have had almost nothing but HOF Qb's to work with - and outside of that winning record I haven't heard a huge number of positives about McCarthy and a lot that is pretty negative (which is not the same case with Payton or Belichek). Having a great QB is not a knock on a coach but I feel that coaches get way too much credit for success when they have one, pretty much every 'great coach' you can name has had a top tier QB. look at the Colts for example - Jim Caldwell had a record of 24 - 8 with Manning as the QB so he must be an incredible coach, wait Manning gets injured and they go 2-14 - Chuck Pagano's record was 49 - 31 with Luck as the QB so he must also be a great coach, wait Luck gets injured and they go 4-12. Luck comes back and they go straight back to a winning record. So how much of the success was being driven by the QB and how much by the Coach? And I do think that Bowles could well have gone over .500 if we had a player of Aaron Rodgers quality - do you not think that a team that has been last in RZ efficiency would not have come away (on average) with at least 1 more TD per game with him under centre than we have managed? Not sure what I feel about Sam's potential has anything to do with wanting or not wanting McCarthy as the HC
I am just saying that you cannot just point to someone having a winning record as a coach and say "they must be the best option" when its not possible to judge how much of that success was down to a great QB on the roster (which we do not have) - he could be great, he may not be, but it needs to be based on something more than just "his teams have won more than they have lost"
McCarthy seems to be the clear cut best option of experienced HC's available. Assuming that Harbaugh is off the table - who else do you want? If he interviews well Johnson should sign him on the spot. Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
It's always been my opinion that the difference in talent in the NFL is truly razor thin. Coaching is the #1 factor for success in the NFL. It's pretty difficult to win in spite of bad coaching. It's implausible to do it for over a decade. The Jets (and Darnold) really could use a sure thing right now. There is no more of a sure thing than McCarthy right now.
