I'd be willing to consider Gase as OC, but I'm sure he wants another HC job and somebody will be foolish enough to give it to him, I just hope it's not the Jets. He needs a year or two off from being a HC to reflect on what went wrong and figure out how to change.

Actually you hire a HC because he knows how to build a staff, develop a game plan and coach players. Not because he knows how to build a team.
It's too much for one person to manage the players, staff, day to day personnel issues and then handle the scouting department on top of it. Coaches work 12 -18 hours per day during the season, where do they find the time to watch College players ? It's a proven recipe for failure.
As I stated before, a major part of the HC interview process revolves around how the coach would use the current players and what he feels he would need player wise to succeed with his vision.
That plays a large part in who ultimately gets the job.

Sources: The #Jets are expected to interview former #Packers coach Mike McCarthy for their vacant head coach position. #NYJ has one of the more coveted jobs and McCarthy would get to work with Sam Darnold. This is his first known interview.

I agree, a HC doesn't have the time to do all those things, but one your scouting dept. and GM produce a list of possible players, the HC should have final say over who they get.

There are usually 5-7 team executives involved during the interview.
The Chris reference is posted several times in above post. The same post that quote him not interested in any coach who demands total control .

Quick takeaways from CEO Christopher Johnson on the head-coaching search: The final decision will be his. He and GM Mike Maccagnan will run the search. They will keep the same power structure, with the GM and head coach reporting to Johnson. They're not interested in a candidate that demands total control. He prefers an offensive minded coach, but isn't married to that. He will consider college coaches. Head-coaching experience would be a plus"

What do you want him to say?

"Oh this team i own is a pile of shit. Dont bother with us"

More goes on behind the scenes than any of us know.

If you dont like it. Stop engaging, stop spending and go do some gardening or watch a different team/sport.

Otherwise your opinion just like mine is nothing but words on the internet.

We can only hope this works out... I'm just not up for another multiyear rebuild and OJT episode.

McCarthy and Caldwell both have a negative stigma to me in that I feel they wasted the talents of Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers. I guess it is possible that they actually helped them to grow as QB's too. I don't know. Also the fact that they worked with such All-Time greats could be a positive in terms of helping Sam.

Input yes, final say, no way.
You have to remember that there are 2 very different goals for a HC and a GM.
A GM must look at the long term 2,3,4 years ahead, while a coach has to look at this weeks opponent.
Funny but I recall Bowles being blamed for every draft pick made and being blamed repeatedly for every bust. Did he have full control?
I recall a thread about how Bowles influenced Macs drafting with pages of post. Isn't that exactly what you are asking for now?

You beat me to it. There's no way that he's ready to be a HC in the NY media coming off of a locker room revolt. Player's going over his head and putting out him or me ultimatum's?!?!?

MAYBE he can figure it out somewhere else...

but as you said - he'd be much better off to take a year away from the big seat in order to distance himself from that debacle as well as make the necessary adjustments to learn how to lead a team.

Well McCarthy has the Jets as his first interview. I'm never quite sure if being the first on the list is a good thing or whether it just sets the market for subsequent visits.

I like the McCarthy news. I’m undecided on him as a coach but he’s hands down the most successful and experienced candidate. You have to bring him in for an interview if you’re serious about this coaching search.

We're not hiring confused assistants again. We're hiring an experience HC not named Caldwell

If Sean Payton was available, would you want him? I bet. McCarthy has identical stats to Payton.

Thank God. He is my first choice considering I truly believe we have 0 shot at either Harbaugh. He has experience in both regular and post season, a winning record and what I believe to be the best chance of putting a staff together. I think he comes to NY, it's a great fit. I believe he is the top coaching candidate and it looks like we are gonna get the 1st crack at him.

I wish that were true, but based on the fact that M. Campbell turned us down for even an interview, I have a hard time believing it. It sounds like just the writer's opinion.

I liken McCarthy to the Andy Reid situation in Philadelphia. After awhile, shit gets stale and a change of scenery is needed. This is one of my top choices.

Assuming you believe in your HC to make good decisions, why wouldn't you bow to his choices on players? As to Bowles - or any inexperienced, or HC with a losing track record - I explained would NOT give him veto power. But this also highlights the ongoing problem with Macc not being able to sell his case to the owners to back his decisions.

Again, I'm not saying that EVERY HC should have this kind of power, but those with a proven winning record should. And stating publicly that you're not going to consider any candidate who wants that power is a bad move. What decent HC candidate would want to come here knowing they have to work with a guy like Macc who hasn't shown an ability at getting good talent?

As I expected. There's no hope for this franchise as long as the Johnsons own it. We're all fools for supporting and rooting for this team. At least my time is short.
