With all the great and insightful posters here at TGG I was wondering what are the consensus regarding the Jets expectations for this season. I don't necessarily mean wins and losses but what do we want to see or expect out of this team starting with game one.
I look at this season as a pivotal time in Jets history. IMO we are about to sail into unchartered waters, A new era of football, behind an extremely young core of players, with limited experience but strong in energy and desire. We are led by Sam Arnold, youngest QB to start in the NFL. An exciting time for the future, but we need to temper our desires for immediate success.
From my viewpoint here is what I would like to see
1- The confirmation of our FQB. Mistakes will be made, growing pains will be there, but that touch of brilliance that will comfirm we finally have the QB of our dreams will surface. I expect a game plan that protects Sam without over constraining his ability to grow.
2- I expect plenty more out of our defense and the CS. I want to see the ability to keep games close to give the kid a chance. I want to see us holding on to leads and not give up the ghost with pathetic prevent defense schemes
3- I want to see a team that is disciplined, prepared and avoids stupid penalties.
4- I want to see our WR , TE and RB corps to give a little extra to make Sam successful
5- I want to exit the year knowing we are on the right road and making progress
6- I want to forever eradicate the term " Same old Jets" from our vocabulary

Finally I want to thank all the TGG members for making the off season bearable. All the best to all and go Jets.
    Can't wait

Thanks @LAJet! The regular season is here! Love it. You are right with all of that. 2019 will be the true New Era of Jets football. They will be getting new jerseys, they will be signing players with all their cap space, hopefully adding more play makers in the draft, and Sam Darnold will have a year under his belt. 2018 is pretty much the bridge in between the past and the future. I think it will be a fun season for fans. They can win anywhere from 5-10 games, and let other players and teams around the league know that the Jets are back. This is a place you want to play and a place that has one of the brightest futures with young stars like Darnold leading the offense and Adams leading the defense.

    I'm not expecting much.

    BUT

Who really can say at this point?

It all depends on Sam Darnold right now he's a complete unknown. If he plays like a typical rookie QB probably 5-11 again.

If he lives up to the hype right away they can compete for a Wild Car d spot. He has plenty of weapons to work with.

My optimistic, but not unrealistic wish list :D

Darnold shows progress throughout the year gelling with his WR's
No name WR group has 2, 1,000 yard receivers.
One of the TE's separates himself from the others.
OL shows progress in the run game.
    Jets win 7+games.
Finish games strong....don't lose games in 4th quarter.
    Cut down on penalties !

The single most important thing to me, is the development of Sam into our bona fide FQB. I'm hoping for continued growth and for the offense to grow with him. Hold onto your hats, this season could be a bumpy ride.

Beyond that I'd like to see the defense assert itself and take control of games from their side of the ball. If we find a way to get pressure, I think this defense can be very good.

Lastly, I would like to see special teams evolve into a threat rather than a liability. Might be wishful thinking...

Mine is simple... I'd like to see competency from the coaching staff.

I'm predicting that the Jets go 10-6 and make the playoffs behind a top 5 Defense while Sam Darnold becomes Rookie of the Year, Todd Bowles becomes Head Coach of the year and Mike Maccagnan wins the Executive GM of the year (my 6 Jet predictions).

But as a fan of course I don't "expect" any of the above.

Win/loss totals actually means absolutely nothing to me throughout 2018 and irrelevant come my assessment of this 2018 team.

I just want our younger players to show improvement, growth and development upon last year.

I just want Sam Darnold to stay healthy and gain experience and knowledge due to playing time earned along with having a chance to learn and later improve upon rookie mistakes.

The only thing I expect as a Jets fan is for this team to show signs of life while playing hard and competing under Todd Bowles before heading into 2019's offseason...

That's when as a Franchise we'll then feature the league's most available salary cap space of any NFL team.

And that's when I'll begin to expect lofty expectations out of this team moving forward with Sam Darnold as a 2nd year pro come 2019; but 2018 isn't the year for it (imo) and is to be used for player and future evaluation.

Playing out of their minds: 9-7
    Playing over their heads: 8-8
    Exceeding expectations: 7-9
    I expect: 6-10
    Most likely: 5-11

Expectations? None. This is still a very young team learning how to win.

    Good list, LA.

Aside from Sam, I'd add development and/or further development of young players like Enunwa, Williams, Adams, Maye, Anderson, Lee, Williamson, Middleton, Shepherd, Herndon, Leggett, Nickerson, Luvu, Cannon, McGuire, Robinson, Fatukasi, Jones, and hopefully Shell.

I want to see (and expect to see) a solid contribution from our WR, TE & RB corps if the OL can open holes and keep Sam upright.

I want to see conclusive evidence one way or the other on whether Bowles should stay or go and then see Chris and Mac make the right call.

I want to see Bates prove to be a quality OC.

#1 and # 5 are most realistic.........as far as #4 we have some good skill players but nobody that makes you go WOW......

As I have already predicted I'm thinking 6-10 or 7-9 at best.

    1. I expect Darnold to go through growing pains, but show plenty flashes of being the FQB we have been waiting a long time for.

    2. I expect the offense will be slightly above average, but not great with the OL still needing a long term answer at LT.

    3. I expect the defense to be above average, but susceptible to big plays because of the lack of a pass rush.

    4. I expect(and hope) Bowles becomes aggressive with a FQB and is willing to take risks when the situation dictates it.

    5. I expect this season to be a stepping stone to a playoff run in 2019.

  13. Clean lines.

Either young guys step up & god forbid become impact players placing us on an upward trajectory OR nobody steps up,Bowles is still half baked ln gameday & we have new regime w a young QB & a ton of cap space to work with in 19’

No more wishy washy 5-11 but “we dont know what bowles is yet”.Put up or shut up

The season will start slow...we could be 0-3 after the first 10 days. But the team will start to gell and pull off some good wins. 3-5 at the break. 500 ball the rest of the way, losing some heart breakers, ending 7-9. 2019 will look VERY promising. Our projection will look similar to the Rams, although they have a much better team right now with a 2 year head start.

Every year I say the same dam thing. I want a team to be physically fit and physical, I want them to be competitive w/o leading the league in penalties. I expect them to be prepared every game and execute the game plan and not come out flat for any game - any game. I also expect the young guys to improve ,,, as for records your guess is as good as mine. Finally, I expect the HC to improve and hold people accountable for bad play, bad attitudes, etc. if not get out!

Ask me again after 4 games ....

    Expectations,
I expect Q to make himself some money this year.
The right side of the line to show it’s worth keeping
Leggett to show he is the te I thought he was in college. Clemson ,if you didn’t know. They play in the ACC.
The left side of the line to show it needs upgrading
Bones Jones to show mo Claiborne is expendable next year.
Leonard Williams to have a big year.
Jets to show they are on the rise.
Fans to call for everyone to be fired

Same ol Jets will not be eradicated until the 2nd Super Bowl is won

I would like to see an innovative, aggressive offense. I want to see a team that plays smart, hard football. Doesn't quit on games. Can make adjustments and has full faith and confidence in their quarterback. Don't handcuff. Let him go out there and make plays, make mistakes, and learn from them

Darnold will step up and be the leader and franchise QB that we need. But he can't do it himself. We need to surround him with intelligent, passionate players who don't take plays or games off. No Mo Wilkerson types

Great points. The bold is Jets gospel to me. Let this be the year where we get conclusive evidence to that effect. And put The DC under the microscope.
