if you guys think Darnold is "the one" and many of you do, then going big after Mack only makes more sense. Darnold's rookie contract for years gives the flexibility to absorb any big contract and the best defensive player in the game is better than anyone to spend that money on. as for the draft pick? you are never going to get anyone better than Mack so that shouldn't even be a concern.
That may be true, but we need OL help badly, especially at LT. There are a few good LT prospects who can protect Darnold's blindside for years to come.
But why do we have to have this tunnel vision? Its like any position the team wants to address that isnt OL is like an immediate no. Last i checked Darnold needs a surrounding cast beyond just OL & yes even a quality defense helps protect him. Its like folks are putting all their eggs in 1 basket. We arent 5 pro bowl OL away from the promised land.We have other glaring needs.Sad but true.I guess we’ll juat wait 3-4 years for the OL to be up to folks standards and then MAYBE we’ll bring in some additional help at other positions like maybe a pass rusher or an ELITE skill talent
It’s FO policy to only assess OL in rounds 5-7. That’s where you find the real cornerstone starters... who needs day 1 OL when day 3 does exactly the same thing?
Never said we need 5 pro bowl OL, just a franchise LT first and foremost. C is another position where I'd like to have a long term answer. If top OL players made it to FA, I'd be willing to give up a first for Mack, but that almost never happens and next year looks to be no exception. IMO, there's a better chance that a few decent pass rushers are FA's next year that we can sign.
I wonder what actual compensation for Mack would truly be? He is a great player and still young. Not sure a 1st Round Pick would be enough. Do the Jets want to give up more? Tough question.
That article says more than a dozen teams reached out and the Raiders told all of them they aren't trading him. Sounds more like Manish taking a shot in the dark and assuming it's true than anything.
Theres just alot to chew on w this “Franchise OT or bust” in round 1. Im not sure exactly where to begin but here it goes.. 1. Yes LT is an extremely important need. But so is pass rusher as well as an elite level skill be it WR/RB/TE..If you wanna rank OL as top need I wouldnt argue w you.But what if on draft day the OT’s we’re looking at OTC are Solid B’s but theres a pass rusher graded as an A?And lets remove FA from the equation for the sake of this discusion. We reaching on that LT when pass rusher is pretty much just as big of a need?Cause thats where i draw the line. 2. The OL needs alot more than just a franchise LT.While its a great starting point we can just as effectively address the OL on day 2 & early day 3. We need more than 1 player.Hell the need runs deeper than the starting 5..the whole unit starters & backups included is not good.which leads to my next point.. 3.What if there are no good OTs OR the value doesnt become justified till well after our first pick? Its a pretty common theme historically. Are we back to reaching? Lets start w that & see if i need to go into #’s 4-10 or so
1 is the issue many GMs find them selves faced with and there is no wrong or right answer on it. Some teams pass on a need to get a better graded player with the BPA and wind up hopefully with a more talented team overall but gaping holes that never get filled elsewhere. meanwhile some teams take a lower graded player to fill a need. OAK did that this year reaching on a T to fill a hole on the o-line for example. Either way is fine as in the long run you never know how a player will turn out and draft grades are meaningless once the season starts. 2 this is true. i'm hoping garcia pans out and reaches his potential as that would be huge but as i see it now we need 3 lineman and ijalan getting hurt only made 2018 worse. we don't have a 2nd rounder next year but should use our top 2 picks on o-line IMO and it's a deep draft for o-line thankfully 3 either reach or trade back for picks. it wouldn't be the worse situation to trade back and get an extra pick
Would love a talent like Mac however there are a few very compelling reasons why this probably won't happen: 1) Raiders want to keep him or get a boatload of picks (which we don't have) 2) We are in same conference (preference will go to NFC teams) 3) We are straying away from moves like this that take away pics and tons of cap room 4) Only 1 year remaining on his contract, so a new one would need to be agreed to
With a potential franchise quarterback on the roster, the Jets could soon be looking to get a guy who will regularly attack other franchise quarterbacks. The Jets have reached out to the Raiders regarding a possible trade for holdout defensive end Khalil Mack, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. Per Mehta, more than a dozen teams have made inquiries regarding Mack, the 2016 defensive player of the year. The Jets have not yet made a trade offer to the Raiders. Regardless of the team involved, any transaction would be complicated. In addition to working out a deal with the Raiders for compensation, the team would need to be ready to pay Mack. Otherwise, the new team would simply be inheriting the holdout. The Raiders and Mack haven’t negotiated in months. Oakland possibly believes that Mack will show up when the regular season begins, since a holdout at that point would result in more than $814,000 in lost game checks, one week at a time. The Jets definitely seem to in the market for a pass rusher; they reportedly reached out recently to the Jaguars regarding a possible trade for defensive end Dante Fowler.
QB-Check CB-Check. Edge-Missing LT-Missing Elite Skill-Missing(Some names in the hat) These are the pivotal positions that require top level talent to be true contenders. As far as im concerned what order we fill them in is based solely on A.Quality. B.Opportunity. We can prioritize & speculate all we like but all that should matter is finding the Top talent that fits the scheme for those remaining spots. Of course we want to protect the shiny new asset & bring this zone running game to life. But do we just want OL that are “good enough” or ensure that we’re getting high level performers that fit the scheme? Its as if we’re over compensating so much for this need that we’re sacrificing the quality that comes w mere discipline & prudence. Are we forgetting the OL Darnold played behind this past year or that he quite commonly leaves the pocket anyway just like Big Ben? Also, adding an elite skill doesnt protect Darnold just as well?I mean its harder to blitz or complicate coverages if a franchise QB has a consistent explosive threat. Doesnt a pass rusher seemingly elevating this D protect a QB by keeping the team in games & avoiding defenses from pinning thier ears back? This is all relative of course. And im not saying lets take another Corner or “5 T” but we should not sacrifice value or quality at need spots I hope beyond hope come next April that theres an LT sitting at pick 32 who’s Hill/Powell/Ferguson all in 1 & is unquestionably the top available taken that our pick..but thats not a plausible scenario at this stage.
I agree with that but it depends on the position. an elite QB can make up for lots of issues elsewhere. guys like aaron rodgers do it all the time. If darnold can be that guy at some point it would make up for a lot. I don't see a lot of holes on this team I think we are talented but young. Our secondary could be tops in the NFL. claiborne is a good CB1 and will be out CB2. johnson is a top 3 CB in the NFL. adams and maybe both looked good as rookies. Our d-line is strong too and despite popular opinion around here i like our ILBs. it's really just OLB that needs help and landing mack or fowler somehow would basically make our defense complete so it goes back to offense. WR i think we are stacked at. I think robbie, Q, and pryor all have WR1 talent. and kearse is a solid 2 at worst 3 so hime being a WR 4 is huge. not many dime backs can cover him if any. our TEs look good as well. It's really RB and o-line that look weak on offense and of course the big question mark in darnold. We can't fix the o-line now which is why we won't be a great team in 2018 but next off season we have plenty of money and picks to address that especially if we can land fowler. we could sign the top 2 FA o-lineman and draft 2 more in the 1st and 3rd rounds as well and it's a deep class for o-line. We could see 3 new starters next year on the line in an instant makeover.
Likely 2 first to a first third and player. Think it would depend on how high the first is projected too.
If they demand two firsts I probably just move on to Fowler but can't say it's not tempting. Mack is truly one of those guys who would change everything for our D
Oh trust me. I love college football. I created the "Saquon Barkley Thread" before the 2017 NCAA Football season was under way. And talked up Saquon like never before. I was laughed at (by some) who stated you "never take a RB during the 1st round" etc. Only to see the kid go 2nd overall. My assessment was accurate. And speaking of a luxury in "which we shouldn't pay for" is something in which (both) Bill Polian & Peyton Manning would strongly disagree with. Do you need proof? I'll provide it for you. Peyton Manning as a rookie (1998) went 326/575 (56.7%), 4,739 yards, 26 TD's/28 INT's and a QB Rating of 71.2 (Indianapolis went 3-13) during Manning's rookie season. *Manning was not selected to the Pro-Bowl. And the following offseason Indianapolis drafted Edgerrin James with the 4th overall pick of the 1999 NFL Draft. Peyton Manning as a second year player (1999) then goes 331/533 (62.1%), 4,135 yards, 26 TD's/15 INT's and a QB Rating of 90.7 (Indianapolis went 13-3) while the Edge rushed for 1,553 yards and 13 TD's along with 62 receptions for 586 receiving yards and 4 TD Receptions (2,139 yards from scrimmage and 17 offensive TD's). *Manning was selected to the Pro-Bowl. But wait. There is more to this story. Peyton Manning as a 3rd year player (2000) went 357/571 (62.5%), 4,413 yards, 33 TD's/15 INT'S and a QB Rating of 94.7 (Indianapolis went 10-6) while the Edge rushed for 1,709 yards and 13 TD's along with 63 receptions for 594 receiving yards and 5 TD receptions (2,308 yards from scrimmage and 18 offensive TD's). *Manning was selected to the Pro-Bowl. And now the story begins to get intriguing. During Peyton Manning's 4th season. Edgerrin James gets injured and only plays 6 games (while Indianapolis shits the bed without him). Manning as a 4th year player (without Edge) goes 343/547 (62.7%), 4,131 yards, 26 TD's/23 INT's and a QB Rating of only 84.1 (Indianapolis went 6-10 ovrerall and 3-7 without Edgerrin James). *Manning was not selected to the Pro-Bowl. The story gets even better. The following season? Edge returns (and so does Indianapolis). Manning as a 5th year player went 392/591 (66.3%), 27 TD's/19 INT's and a QB Rating of 88.8 (Indianapolis went 10-6 overall and 9-5 with Edge ) while the Edge returned and rushed for 989 yards and 2 TD's (14 games) along with 61 receptions for 354 receiving yards and 1 TD reception (1,343 yards from scrimmage and 3 offensive TD's). *Manning was selected to the Pro-Bowl. So there you have it. The oh so great #18 Peyton Manning during his first 5 years went.... 7-21 overall (a losing percentage .250%) and 0 Pro-Bowls (without) Edgerrin James as his star RB. Compared to: 32-14 overall (a winning percentage of .695%) and 3 Pro-Bowls (with) Edgerrin James as his star RB. None of that was any "coincidence". Most people who talk about Manning's "rookie season" compared to his 2nd year never even bother to mention Edgerrin James or what he meant to a young #18; just too clueless to do so.. Edgerrin James made #18 a much better Quarterback and gave a younger Manning a fighting chance to develop into the type of Franchise QB in which he did. As would an elite Le'Veon Bell do for Sam Darnold during Darnold's 2nd-5th seasons of play. I'd consider Khalil Mack + his salary cap hit along with a 1st round pick as a "luxury" in which we can not afford. But after trading up from 6th to 3rd in order to draft Sam Darnold; a Le'Veon Bell + a 2019 1st round Franchise LT would not become a "luxury" but rather an investment into securing our first Franchise QB since Joe Namath with A+ protection (Bell + an LT). The Colts not only spent a 1st round draft pick on Edgerrin James (4th overall) but also agreed to give him a $49 Million Dollar Rookie contract. And #18 benefited (greatly) because of it. I'm extremely sorry if some Jet fans are completely clueless on what a 26-27 years of age elite RB in Le'Veon Bell can (and will) do for both of our Offensive attack as well as Sam Darnold as our Franchise faithful QB... Le'Veon Bell + a 2019 1st Round Franchise LT will help Sam Darnold 10x more than Khalil Mack could (or would) as an OLB.
