We can't just "sign Teddy to an extension". It's not up to us.

    It's up to Teddy.

If Teddy believes he can get big time starter money next year as an undisputed starter somewhere, he's not going to sign here for less to "battle for the starting position" or to be a veteran backup.

    He's not a Jet fan.

Yeah, there are no battles. I don't get how fans can't comprehend this. Darnold is the guy and he likely will be a great QB. End of story. I loved signing Teddy and hoped he could return from injury and he has. I don't want to trade him, but I do realize he won't be on the team in 2019, so it will be interesting to see what the Jets get offered for him.

It would, but I think your seeing a shift in the NFL toward faster more athletic players. That would aslso lead to an increase in the number of ACL injuries we see.

Look at the Schedule. If you don't start Darnold week 1, you don't throw him to the wolves weeks 4-8. Jags, Broncos,Colt's and Vikings. 3 of the best Defenses in the league, teeing off on the rookie with a bottom 3 o line protecting him to start his career.

It's clear that Darnold is the future. The question is: is he the present? Based on what he's shown on the field, I'd have to say "yes". He certainly needs more experience, but he won't get that carrying a clipboard. He's demonstrated that he learns quickly, and translates that knowledge into performance. He's far more accurate than anyone the Jets have had since forever; has an innate feel for pressure; can make plays when the original play breaks down; and has shown no fear. These are all attributes that can't really be coached - you either have them or you don't - and Sam has them. The ONLY factor that would prevent the Jets from making him the Day 1 starter is the fear of him being hurt, but anyone can get hurt any time. If you hold him out for the entire season he might tear his ACL next preseason (see Tony Ft. Laud's post above). Holding him back does only one thing: holds him back. He was drafted to be the Long Lost FQB, so let him lead us to the Promised Land.

Start Saml let Teddy be QB 2; McCown is the Insurance Policy.

If its not a 2nd, then he should stay on the roster. Jets could potentially get a 3rd round comp pick should someone sign him.

This is definitely the year for Sam & the Team to take their lumps. Get Sam as much experience as possible this year & try to build a better OL in free agency. The expectations for Sam are not going to be real high this year playing behind that OL. '19 will be the year for Sam to show what he learned this year & see how it translates to the field. Mac has to fix the OL before the '19 season. Another thing is I am not to sure this ZONE blocking running attack is for me. Even with a bad OL last year we still had some good holes open up for the RB's, this year this ZONE blocking seems to want to slide everything outside and seems ineffective. It all starts up front with the OL. MAC HAS TO OPEN UP HIS CHECKBOOK AN GET A FEW LINEMEN BY '19 SEASON CAUSE ALL THE HYPE IN THE WORLD ABOUT SAM ISN'T GOING TO HELP THIS TEAM WIN NEXT YEAR & BEYOND. I would have liked to see what Brady would have done playing behind our OL. He probably would have just been ….maybe just a good QB, certainly not a GOAT...and would have been out of football 6 years ago.

Absolutely absurd to even think getting rid of SAM. Yes Teddy has played a bit better than SAM in the first 2 PRESEASON GAMES! I can't believe there are fools out their thinking about unloading SAM. Don't Forget Teddy should be expected to play better than SAM....He's 4 freaking years older with experience. I guarantee you this …..SAM will be a better QB than Teddy when he is Teddy's age...25.

Don't forget a couple weeks ago: A few Jets fans on here discussed trading Sam since he did not sign on time for Training Camp. @Big Cat that was a stupid take no doubt, but they will continue to pop up daily I am sure. :D:D

It's funny when Jet fans say "it might be an attractive alternative for him, get some long term security as a back up and never risk injury" lololol.

As if he's a Jet fan.

The long term security is THE GUARANTEED MONEY HE'LL GET as a top FA QB.

    Geez.

A back-up's guaranteed money is nothing, and base salary would take 4 years to make as a front line starter.

And if he didn't want to risk injury, he wouldn't be trying to initiate contact in the preseason to test his leg! It's not like he's a 34 year old looking to hold a clip board and make $3 mill a year.

Look at top free agent QBs recently and see what they are commanding.

Obviously he's not getting Cousins money but if he's healthy and shows he's a legit starter, and there is competition for his services, he's going to get at least $30-$40 million in guarantees. And $15-$20 mill a year.

Probably not a comp pick because we will be signing free agents which will nullify us from getting comp picks.

I call him a veteran because that's what he is. Even playing one season makes him a veteran, but Teddy has played two seasons, not one. Get your facts straight.

Bridgewater mad the Pro Bowl simply because he was the best available QB after all the others that were actually name to the Pro Bowl had already dropped out. The BRW fascination and obsession is BIZARRE. You have one of the best QB prospects in the NFL with a ceiling many many notches higher than BRW, who his own teammate calls the most impressive rookie he has been around, has been consistenly better than BRW in camp and performed extremely well in 2 preseason games, and yet people want to start the game manager that failed Minnesotas long term physical over the guy we gave up 4 draft picks for and has EXCEEDED all expectations. Couple that with the fact that the Jets seem in now way interested in starting him and are giving the vast majority of the snaps to Darnold, and clearly WANT him to start and you have bizarro world thread that could only exist in Jetsville. There is literally no upside to starting BRW, only potential trade value. He was signed as a low cost flyer simply because at the time the Jets were not guaranteed to get any young QB. But they got the best one. Holy hell.

I see almost no chance Bridgewater starts the 3rd game.

I was really struggling with the starting role but I'm quickly coming around to the fact that Sam has exceeded expectations and his performance is close enough to TB and McCown, with far more growth potential than both. So strategically you start Sam, draft a game plan that protects him as much as possible behind this line, and let him grow this year as a leader. TB will remain the back up with McCown as the QB coach in the making.
If God forbid Sam gets hurt, TB moves in. If we succeed, and into the season a need for a starting caliber QB arises.....TB gets his shot and we get draft picks.
    Let the season begin
