We discuss all these possibilities but this post really is all that matters. If Darnold outplays Bridgewater and McCown, he should start. Pretty simple. If Bridgewater does, he should. If McCown does, ....well that would be disappointing.
I hope Donald is enjoying his honeymoon period with the media. It shouldn't last much more than PS week 3.
So far he's impressed throughout OTA's and into training camp thus far. If Darnold as a rookie, is also able to progress and impress during preseason; well then I'm all for the rookie becoming opening day starter come MNF. Dan Marino (week 6). Peyton Manning. Ben Roethlisberger (week 3). Matt Ryan. Matthew Stafford. Joe Flacco. Andrew Luck (who Sam reminds me of). RG3. Andy Dalton. Cam Newton. Russell Wilson. Derek Carr. Jameis Winston. Marcus Mariota. Dak Prescott. Carson Wentz. Etc. Etc. Outside of Dan Marino and Big Ben (both rookie starters) all of these QB's were day one rookie starters from day one. It's became a trend and isn't anything new to the NFL. So no, I'm not sure why Jet fans are concerned with the thought of Sam Darnold starting from day one, because the waiting game with the likes of Petty & Hackenberg was a failed attempt. If anything I'd be a little concerned if our 3rd overall pick was not able to out perform a damn near 40 year old career backup of an NFL Journeymen in Josh McCown or a player returning from a career threatening knee injury still wearing a brace in Teddy Bridgewater throughout the offseason. It doesn't look like Baker Mayfield has a fighting chance or even a prayer of passing Tyrod Taylor on the depth chart. Anytime soon either. And I'm glad I'm not reading those same reports on Sam not being able to pass or compete against Josh/Teddy. If Sam proves he's worthy and tackles the Bull by it's horns throughout preseason, well then i 100% want him under Center come opening day under the bright lights of Monday Night Football.
I believe it would be a huge mistake to start him week 1. I wish my Jets would learn but every year they don't.
What are you talking about? They babied Petty and Hack and they turned out to be terrible. Bowles is not someone who likes playing rookies and he has veteran options to put in case Darnold isn’t ready. I would think if they start him then they are very confident in him.
Mcclown, the incumbent starter was 7 for 7 with a touchdown in the team scrimmage over the weekend and yet first thing monday morning the reports are that Darnold is close to winning the starting job. This obviously isn't a real competition
What the hell is “case and point”? The phrase is “case in point” and is typically followed with an example. What’s next? “For all intensive purposes”?
The only reason to not start a rookie qb is if he is really struggling with the playbook, making pre-snap reads, reading and adjusting to coverages or if there is a good veteran starter. All of those seem to not be a problem. Darnold should start.
Why? When do you think? Week 5? He is the #3 overall pick who the majority expected to go #1 overall. How long would you wait? If he is ready, then he is ready. If not, the Jets will know.
