NEVER draft for need! Take the best player and fill holes in free agency. That is what the best teams do.
I gave us a B. I didn't like trading up because I'm not sold on any of the QBs really and don't think they were worth the picks we gave away. Also, Rosen was my top choice if I had to take one. That said, we landed Darnold who was my second choice. I thought the Shephard pick was solid. He was one of the guys I was targeting for the 4th. We need DL depth losing most of what used to be a positive for us. I really liked the Nickerson pick. At that point in the draft to get someone with that much speed AND productivity is rare. You usually either get the guy who was productive but lost in the underwear Olympics or the guy who has the measurables but not the productivity. Granted he went to Tulane and is undersized, but I liked the pick nevertheless. Cannon looks talented but he went to an HBCU, d2 at that so hard to evaluate. I like Chris Herndon, but he has injury woes and his mediocre route running worry me. He is however a good threat in the pass game and, as a former WR, has RAC capabilities. I don't see him being much help in the run game but to be honest, I'll take a pass threat over a blocker, if I have to choose, all day
Grade B from me I really like the Darnold pick but beyond that I just don't feel like we have too much coming out of this draft - which fingers crossed is a good sign as in years past I have often loved our 2nd round picks and lauded their perceived value only to end up being really disappointed. Slightly confused by picking up two defensive linemen and not a single offensive line guy. For some reason not having a 2nd round pick just left me feeling that this draft was really incomplete (compared to missing a pick in any later round). Hope we can somehow get one back for next year. Best thing about having our QB of the future on the books is that if/when we suck next year and end up with a high draft pick we can trade down like the Colts to a QB hungry team and pick up a bonanza of picks
Yeah, most championships are won with teams that have a FQB. Get one and build around him...THAT's the recipe for winning consistently.
You have to draft for value. Sure take a QB or even trade up for one IF THE VALUE IS THERE. The Cleveland Browns have taken many first round QBs and have zero championships to show for it. The Patriots drafted a QB first overall and he took them to a SB where they lost to the Packers led by second rounder Brett Favre (a journeyman on his second team). They did not win a SB until they found a QB in round 6. The list goes on and on. You get your QB when the time is right. You do not burn valuable draft capital to move up for a QB with lots of question marks when a potential hall of famer is available at another position.
The time wasn't right this year when there were more than 1 FQB prospects and we didn't have a FQB on our roster?
Best players we could have got at #6 were a linebacker and a guard - given we have nothing at the QB spot at the moment I am glad we went in that direction (sure I would have preferred not to trade down but it is what it is).
Absolutely, this team has not taken OL on day 1 since 2006... 12 years ago. Since then, we have barely drafted OL on day 2. Vlad Ducasse in 2010 and Brian Winters in 2013. No blue collar OL, just some small school prospects. In the last 8 years we have only drafted 2 OL before rounds 4-7. Yet we have taken half a dozen DL and CBs in round 1 alone. Instead, we have entirely relied on Day 3, UDFA, and FAs to protect the QB and pave the way. That is just plain stupid.
"Instead, we have entirely relied on Day 3, UDFA, and FAs to protect the QB and pave the way. That is just plain stupid" this should be faxed and emailed urgent attn to mike macagnan, GM, NY jets. of course one of our esteemed beat writers could ask this but of course they coddle these guys like they are made of glass.
the more i think about the brady draft - the more i think there was some orchestration of getting brady to new england....similar to 83 when the league really wanted marino with the dolphins or jets. JH the jets had NO choice this year - they had to take a QB from this group at any cost. Could u imagine the multiple assholes they would have gotten ripped if they didn't. yes you make some sense about draft capital and stuff but they put themselves into a pickle and really had no choice.
