Discussion in 'Draft' started by GasedAndConfused, Mar 26, 2018.

?

If Rosen and Darnold are gone, who would you pick with the 3rd pick?

  1. Mayfield

    63.2%
  2. Allen

    36.8%

Regardless of whether he has been hurt or not, his slight frame will be a concern to GMs; that just the nature of the NFL. If Robbie Anderson was 15-20 pounds heavier he would have got drafted.

It’s not, but accuracy isn’t the only category where Mayfield is better.

Touch is a huge one. Mayfield can layer the ball over defenders beautifully while Allen falls apart when he can’t throw a fastball.

Pocket sense is another. Allen frequently leaves clean pockets while Mayfield is more poised in maneuvering a rush to find a throwing lane.

Baker also just seems to have a better natural feel for the middle of the field with regards to anticipation and timing. The Boise St pick I posted of Allen is a good example, he just doesn’t seem to know where defenders are coming from.

I think the reason these debates are so vigorous despite how close the prospects are is because their strengths and weaknesses are so different and the traits we value most are pushing us towards our certain guys.

Better college QB right now without the size to be a top half of the first round pick.

I'm not interested in having the best QB right now; we're not contenders. I want the guy who will be considered the best QB from this draft once it's all said and done.

That's an excellent point and that's my problem with extremely gifted athletes at times. They think their game will last forever. With Cam, he never grew up and he never put the work in to allow his game to mature. He is still the same QB as he was in 2011. The rate of Lamar's improvement doesn't tell me the same story.

Robbie probably had an awful draft process too. Lamar will bulk up just enough where he keeps his explosiveness. I mean Robbie, right now is making a lot of teams regret not drafting him (OK, lets not talk about the off-the field issues). We complained about Robbie not being able to make contested catches, but last season, I thought he took a pretty big step forward.

Speaking of, who is gonna get Robbie the ball? I don't think Baker would be able to down the field.

That's not true. It's called a slot fade.

That’s suggesting that him reaching his ceiling is a given. I don’t think it is.

It looks like it’s down to Mayfield or Rosen....

Rumour has it Allen is going #2 most likely by Denver moving up because it looks like Elway loves him.... Allen is the exact type of QB he likes (it reminds him of himself) and he played at high altitude in Wyoming.

I keep going back and fourth between Rosen and Mayfield..... hopefully Mac can pick the right one

It also depends on how you define ceiling. In a perfect world all QBs have an unlimited ceiling. But it is certainly possible to say that a QB as flawed as Allen who lacks accuracy, pocket presence, touch and anticipation would have a realistic ceiling if everything goes well for him of Blake Bortles. It is arguable that arm strength and measurable are the least important of QB traits. Without a showing of any ability to actually play the QB position it is hard to give Allen any realistic ceiling above below average. Rather the argument can be made that Allen's realistic ceiling is the lowest of the top 6 QBs as his floor.

I can tell you right now, this board is going to have a massive shitfit/hate mac when draft day comes, becase there is 0% chance he traded up for mayfield. we'll have darnold, allen, or rosen. highly doubt we get darnold, but those are the 3 he is looking at. nobody in their right mind would look at mayfield and think he's worth of the 3rd overall pick

I also believe he wouldn’t move up for Mayfield as his game/size has the least chance to succeed at the nfl level. Drew Brees is the exception but he’s literally the only one that I can remember who was 6’ H and came from a spread collage offence and was successful. Brees was also a second round pick because of those red flags. For Mayfield to be drafted in the first round is a lot hype.

You can have your opinions, but you can't tell for certain about the bolded parts. And I won't lose my mind if the pick isn't Mayfield. I don't believe it's Mayfield or bust. I'm ok with selecting Rosen, Darnold, or Mayfield at 3. I'm skeptical about Allen, but will root for him if he is the pick.

You and I usually agree but I vehemently disagree with the bold. In fact, I believe the opposite to be true. Allen "falls apart" when he is throwing the ball too hard and off platform. Side note, I think Mayfield and Darnold this year and Mahomes last year are very good in that area. When you play with WRs that consistently get little to no separation and a line that often allows immediate pressure you get in the habit of throwing the ball hard and off platform a lot and sometimes when it's not necessary. That's what I see on tape. Allen has touch and has displayed excellent touch WHEN he uses it.

Again you have to consider the differences in their college football experience. For Allen, a clean pocket is the exception not the rule which is the opposite for Baker. When you are accustomed to constant immediate pressure, you will fall prey to leaving clean pockets thinking there is pressure that is not there.

Go back and really watch that Boise St pick you reference. Note this was the INT Mayock pop quizzed him on at his pro day. It was more a brilliant defensive play call and execution than it was evidence of poor anticipation, timing and/or not knowing where defenders are coming from. Again it's the total opposite. He threw that with anticipation and timing thinking he was about to be blitzed with no safety in the middle. Had he drilled it, it would have been a completion. Boise St showed pressure and zero coverage pre-snap and as soon as the ball snapped, the safety who was covering the slot bailed to the middle to the middle of the field. Intentionally or by chance, they fooled and baited Allen into an INT. If they stayed in the pre-snap look, Allen's read to the TE down the middle was the perfect one. I've seen the best NFL QBs get caught on a great defensive call.

Maybe that's the case but I just don't see Mayfield as a top 5 pick.

I'm not a football coach. So I'm not an expert on routes. But I'm almost positive you aren't either even though you're acting like one. And I'm also almost positive Mayfield was throwing a fade. Can't be 100% sure because again, I'm not an expert. But I don't think you know what you're talking about, and telling me I don't know football 101 is your way of covering that up.

then why argue the obvious when what you are saying is wrong. The reason it's called it a "fade" route is because the receiver fade's to the sidelines. Most routes are named aptly for what they are.

I'm not acting like anything, this isn't rocket science, this is basic football 101. It's not advanced NFL stuff that only NFL coaches would know. it's basic stuff. I'm not an expert, but this kind of basic stuff doens't need experts to explain it.

so you admit you have no clue, but you are still almost positive someone else is wrong. that is the issue of forums in a nut shell right there. essentially you are saying "i'm not sure because i'm not an expert, but i still think you are wrong"
