Let me first say how I hate the way they protect Qb's now in the NFL but if you are going to follow the rules then we should have had 15 yards and a first down on that play. It was the exact same thing we got called for on the Brady interception. The defender came down with his full body weight and drove the QB into the ground. Not sure if anyone mentioned this on here but I have read the papers and have not seen anyone say it should have been a penalty.
I don't think it should have been a penalty. Seemed like a good hit to me. However, I think the call in the New England game was absurd. Also, I agree that these new rules are just awful. You can't be expected to pull off a quarterback when you are going full speed. The helmet to helmet rules make sense. But a ref making a judgment call on driving the qb to the ground is absurd and should not exist.
Did you see the call last night on "hit" on Hasselbeck? It is really getting ridiculous. The defender came in, Hasselbeck turned his back and the defender forearm hit Hasselbeck in the shoulders. The ref called it a "blow to the head"...15 yards/first down. That call actually changed the game.
the hit was scary, but i dont think it should have been a penalty...it wasnt late, and im pretty sure there was no helmet contact...but if that was rhodes hitting brady, im sure its a 15 yarder.
It shouldn't have been roughing the passer. Sure there have been a lot of stupid RTP calls this season, but I don't want to condone them by "asking" for calls.
The Chad hit wasn't a penalty -- neither was the Brady hit. But thats what happens when you lay out the NFL's poster boy.
It is ridiculous. (I dont want to make the games any longer -- but those are huge penalties -- 15 yards. Maybe they should make them 5 yard penalties -- like the running into the kicker ones).
If that same play was Shaun Ellis taking down David Carr,,,,it would have been roughing the passer without a question...
Roughing the passer or not, how many of you cringed in your seats, watching the replay, imagining how much it would suck to get fully owned by all 300 pounds of super Mario via that particular hit. I for one would not welcome the opportunity.
i dont think it was roughing the passer but on another note that most of you have been saying it is nice to see other teams getting the shaft from the ridiculous roughing the passer rules though, b/c they might actually change it if it hurts someone other than the jets
The numerous penalties against the Jets this year have not changed my opinions regarding the absurdity of officiating regards roughing the passer. I thought Williams hit was perfectly clean. Expect to see more ridiculous plays like the Giants Mathias Kiwanuka letting go of Vince Young because he didn't want to get flagged for roughing the passer and wasn't sure if the ball had been thrown. The NFL needs to find a nice medium. -X-
It should not have been RTP because Chad threw the ball as Williams was taking him down. I believe on the Brady play, he threw it a split secod before he got hit - the penalty was for the "extra" driving of the qb into the ground that got called. I also agree that this penalty has no place in the NFL. The call on Green Bay last night completely changed the momentum of that game. It was also for this same reason that the Giant defender let go of Young and allowed him to run for a first down on 4th down. That was one of the craziest plays I've ever seen!
the league has a dilemma (spelling?) on this issue. if the first string qbs all around the league were on the shelf for rough hits for 4-6 weeks at a time,,,,who the heck wants to watch 2nd string qbs??? therefore, the league has told the officials to protect the qbs.....
The Jags game was the one game I couldn't watch this year (sort of glad I didn't) so I can't comment on the calls...but I remember there being some controversy re: the RTP calls. IMO, it seems as though the refs are instructed to call RTP if it appears that the defender had any opportunity (even the slightest) to "ease the blow" to the qb.
i thought it was barton...but i was at the game in the opposite corner so i wasnt sure watching the hit on the big screen was really lame that was the closest i came to getting to cheer during that game i think i decided never to attend another away jets game after that game atlanta last year...and jax this year...im cursed
