1. Nugent makes Mangini look good. 2. Pennington and o-line makes Mangini look good. Could of easily looked bad. No guts, no glory!!
That Giants game was great. I got to watch the Giants lose and VY put together a nice game. I like that kid, he looks like he's going to be a winner. I just hope never against us.
yeah,,,,adam viniteri and tom brady made belichicken look good.. and joe montana and j.rice made bill walsh look good and --and --and --and-- and ..we can go on and on. hello? dont get your point. sorry.
I agree completely with the thread starter. Compared to the crap we watched week in and week out last year, this year seems like a dream. So don't wake me up either
I think two years ago, NE came into the meadowlands and went (I think 4 times) on 4th and 1 and made it each time. Each time was a qb sneak. It was totally demoralizing to the jets. I loved that call b.c. you looked at risk/reward. The reward was that a 1st down more or less ended the game or at least made a comeback improbable (the giants not withstanding).
Just take a look at my avatar. It says it all. I really like Mangini. He knows what he is doing so far in his time as the Jets Head Coach, and the fact that he is so young makes the success feel greater.
Up 23-3, I consider it playing smart, to win. If you don't trust your D up 20, then we may as well wear Red White and Blue.. Seriously, if that fails, we let them back in the game. It didn't, great, but it was bonehead regardless of the outcome. We're not talking Herm Edwards down 3 with 4 minutes left punting from the opponents 34 here. OUR TERRITORY UP 20... Going for it did not lock the game up.
I didn't see the reason for the call at all. Sure, it helps, but the downside exceeds the upside. But I suppose it points to a more aggressive/different/creative approach to the offense.
There's a school of thought that says that an NFL team should never punt on 4th and 1. It's from the Chicago School of Business and it's based on 30+ years of analyzing what happened when teams went for it and did not go for it on 4th and 1. The study showed a huge differential in final score, something like 2.5 pts for EACH 4th and 1 that a team chose not to punt on. That would be a touchdown's difference if you went for it on 4th and 1 3 times in the same game. The study did not separate positive and negative outcomes overall. It just looked at the final score differential between the two teams and measured that against the go-fors and punts. 2.5 points is a lot to get on a single play just by making the decision not to punt. It actually was more than 2.5 points since they also factored in the increased chance that the other team would score on a failure. Their conclusion was that if you are 4th and 1 on your own 9 you should go for it. Punting puts the other team 1st and 10 on the 50 or better. Going for it keeps you in possession of the ball (and clock) about 90% of the time.
Mangini going for it on that 4th down I don't really see how anyone could defend this call outside of the logic that it was successful The only thing I see that separates this from the onside kick is the fact that it worked. I think the onside kick may be more defensible since it's a surprise call and the upside is greater than the the upside of going for the first down (in the onside kick you're stealing a possession) and the downsides are about equal (the other team will get the ball at about the same spot) A really head-scratching call. I have to say though that I love the fact that we're using the quarterback sneak. I have long felt that it is the most underused play in the NFL as it seems to work around 90% of the time on 3rd and 4th and short. The spread them out and sneak was a play straight out of the Patriot playbook and I remember them doing it to us a few years ago.
