Perennial winners usually follow the path you outlined in your post. Build through the draft, pick a QB through the draft and he can be the FQB for 15 years. My issue with this approach, specifically this offseason is the jets draft position and fear that Macc will either trade too much to move up. I think if they do get Cousins they'll need to do so with by building, but not throwing the kitchen sink at going for the ring this season. We do not need to blow 100 mil in cap space. What we need is to spend wisely, pick your spots and hit on the first 3-4 picks in the draft. If you can do that you can ride that line of competitive rebuilding and having a nice core. If you go more one way than the other, it can ruin us.
Yes, but the reality is also the hit/miss rate is alarming and a crap shoot at best. Are you trading 2 1st rounders and 2 second rounders or more to move up to 3? It's a catch 22 because sure if it works out its great but the Jets haven't been to the playoffs in 7 seasons and a hit and miss on a QB whilst also trading a ton of picks to go get them would essentially make us the worst team in the league, while also killing any progress we've made. It's far too risky and I would much rather take a safer approach that limits the damages of us being able to compete.
The QB's getting those deals are unlikely to be winning Super Bowls afterwards. Who actually won the Super Bowls since the last CBA was signed in 2011? 2011: Eli Manning $14.1M out of a $120M cap. 2012: Joe Flacco $8M out of a $120.6M cap. 2013: Russell Wilson $681K out of a $123M cap. 2014: Tom Brady $14.8M out of a $133M cap. 2015: Peyton Manning $17.5M out of a $143.8M cap. 2016: Tom Brady $13.76M out of a $155.3M cap. 2017: ??? Brady has a $14M hit this year and Nick Foles $1.6M out of a $167M cap. What is missing from this list? QB's with really high contract numbers. The one exception might be Peyton Manning and it's pretty clear that Denver won the SB on other strengths in 2015.
i agree with everything except your thougts on teh market. Cousins has basically the exact numbers as Stafford. sooooo, the market would say that he deserves Stafford money which is indeed, SKY HIGH
QB's I'd take ahead of Cousins in 2018: -Aaron Rodgers -Ben Roethlisberger -Tom Brady -Jimmy Garrapolo -Andrew Luck -Deshaun Watson -Carson Wentz -Drew Brees -Cam Newton -Russell Wilson Carr, Stafford, Rivers and Ryan I'd call even with Cousins. So to me, Cousins is a Borderline Top 10, definitely Top 15 QB. The Redskins felt that was not worth top dollar. Someone else will. Could be the Jets.
Someone will pay him, my thing is if we do sign him, we need to draft OL or still move up and draft Saquan Bradley then
actually, their numbers when brees left san diego aren't too far off . a few more ints for kirk on a 100 or so more atts, but pretty comparable numbers.odds are he won't be an all time great but just dismissing this as not the same when its very comparable is disingenuous
yes to Cousins at 6yrs 150mill (80m guaranteed)....if he wants every last dollar, let him go to the highest bidder, if he wants to Win....he has to leave the Jets with $$$ to fortify the roster!! If we sign him, we should draft Mike White or Kyle Lauletta in mid-late rds....
My list would be virtually identical, minus Watson because I'm not putting him anywhere near that level after a handful of games, and I'd have Ryan higher. Carr, Stafford and Rivers, that's exactly what he is. You can throw a blanket over those three and Cousins. A guarantee of nice performance statistically at least but the same burning question about whether they can win when it really matters. If the Jets signed him I'd expect 2 or 3 playoff runs over a 5/6 year period, which would be all I would anticipate having with Cousins - if you get more years then great. There will no doubt be a few 6 to 8 win years in there as well, its just the way it goes and Brees isn't immune to 7 win years. Is that enough to throw $27-30m py at him?
I'd put him in that same 10-12 range really. Just for me there's Brady, Rodgers and Brees then the middle tier guys and Cousins is in the middle of that pack.
Brilliant Post.. THANK GOD FOR YOU AND NC..frankly best analysis and insight into our situation...Thanks!! What some posters and ALL the Millenials (b. 1980-2000) never will get is the HISTORY of this godforsaken franchise which as you aptly point out contains deja vu decisions that speak to the Cousins V Draft choice Cousins is Neil O'Donnell ALL OVER AGAIN ...just stupid. You neglected to mention B Favre another SB winning QB...>>Failure...its RARE to sign a talented Vet e.g. Kurt Warner , JIm Plunkett who takes you all the way to SB! The Sanchez point is spot on..RELATIVELY CHEAP purchase BIG reward..kid was drafted So here we are today...decisions ...decisions..unfortunately for the Jets organization its Groundhog Day the movie ..with one poor decision after the other year after year
If Mac signs Kirk Cousins we will officially be a "HERM EDWARDS SPECIAL". We will officially have many similarities with Herm Edwards teams. 1) We will have a DECENT QB, not a great one. Chad could have been great, but injuries hampered him. Kirk Cousins is just a decent QB and nothing more. There's nothing more to get out of him. If he hadn't done more in Washington he's NEVER going to in NY. Why so many here believe that somehow the team of Mac and Blowes are SMARTER than the Washington brain trust, will never cease to amaze me. Washington didn't sign him long term for a reason. His demands were way too much. He simply could NOT win the big game no matter surrounding cast he had. 2) Just like Chad Pennington in the early 2000's had a complete albatross contract, that is exactly what it will require the Jets to fork over to get him. 3) The Jets will be as an end result a team stuck in mediocrity. In that endless cesspool of mediocrity. We will almost always be in the range of somewhere between 7-9 up to 10-6. We will always be a fringe playoff team. But make no mistake about it, we will probably NEVER host a playoff game being 10-6 and we will NEVER win a SB. That's called MEDIOCRITY. 4) We already have the HC for it? Blowes I would honestly put a little lower on the coaching prowess scale when being compared to Herm Edwards. He's terrible and literally nothing in comparison to a truly good HC like Parcells. I am a Jets fan. I do NOT want to be any part of mediocre. I want my team to win SB's. The Jets should select a QB through the draft and try to develop him. That's the only way they realize SB expectations.
Let's break down what you say and include your array of Fears over the Draft: "This is not a B Favre..situation ..where we are buying a ring???????" What the heck does THAT mean?.. Cousins has NOT won a SB played at a high level of competition like Favre...Brett won six games in a row for us before he crapped out penis pictures and all ..so he was more than capable..nothing to do with "in his prime"..HE WAS A HEAD AND SHOULDERS better QB than Capt Kirk...plain and simple AND STILL TOOK US NOWHERE...So your age analogy..30-33 etc is pure BS...WHAT MATTERS IS TALENT...Josh Rosen at 20 is prob better than Cousins imo "I would love to draft a QB but there is LOTS OF RISK attached to it". Did that stop Andy Reid from dealing for Mahomes??? Did that stop H Roseman for trading up for Wentz??? LIFE Is risk kiddo ..get used to it "Mac has shown he can't evaluate QB talent"...Your ONE point I agree..and that Bloes is "lost" .BUT MY GOODNESS GRACIOUS HOW BLIND AND STUPID A GM DO YOU HAVE TO BE NOT TO SEE 3 THINGS: Rosen...NFL ready QB about 100 articles written how READY he is MAyfield...Heart of a winner...extremely talented...chip on his shoulder Darnold ...talent off the Scales ...will be a great NFL QB with some improvement Iam sorry but the LEARNING CURVE for Mac is BETTER than for Toilet Bowles ...Mac will end his Macdoodling and draft us a FQB You don't have be first or second pick in draft...NEGOTIATE WITH COLTS AND MOVE UP TO # 3
Blowes "a little lower on the coaching prowess scale than Herm Edwards " ....Falling Off My Chair Laughing I don't even think Toilet could be a TV analyst ...at least Herm has that nailed down..hahaha
Signing Cousins gives you several years to find and groom his replacement. Wouldn't have to force it in this year's draft where we're realistically looking at the 3rd of 4th best prospect.
I see your points but when was the last time the Jets actually developed a QB? I see your points but when was the last time the Jets actually developed a QB? I really don’t get why some folks think of Cousins as just a JAG, he threw for over 4000 yards and 27 TDs, on a team that let his two best receivers walk, has a so-so OL and no real running game. What fan here wouldn’t take those numbers in a heartbeat from a Jet QB? Edit** Sorry, I really messed up the quote feature lol.
Whose fault is it that the Skins have declined? Matter of fact let's look at the Alex Smith acquisition by the Skins. They gave up their best player in the secondary as well as a 3rd round pick for Alex Smith, who to be honest isn't a great QB either and will be getting paid 71M in guarantees up until the age of 34. So what I am asking here, is do you think the Redskins are a franchise capable of making good decisions? Sounds like a NO to me based off this trade as well as acquisitions like Albert Haynesworth. Another man's trash is another man's treasure, the Saints found out first hand.
I don't understand posts like this. None of those guys listed are available free agents like Cousins is. So what exactly is the point in listing other team's quarterbacks? If you want to make an argument against Cousins it makes more sense to compare him to other FA possibilities or rookies.
I just posted essentially the same thing. It's counter productive to discuss QBs unavailable to the Jets or will be retired within 2 years. http://forums.theganggreen.com/thre...snt-sign-with-jets.89828/page-41#post-3653444
