exactly!!! To be fair, we won despite sanchez not because of him. Rex and Tanny did everything they could to work around sanchez. Remember rex treating him like a baby and color coding how risky he could be. Remember how he had a 1 read throw it away if it's not there system? They couldn't trust sanchez to not fuck it up for us. Did he have some good games? of course but so did geno. He made some big throws too. He also made way too many mistakes. It is a 5-6 year set back easily. look at us now 4 years since he was gone 7 years since he took us to the playoffs. Had he panned out and been as good as say a cousins, we wouldn't be looking for a QB right now. we wouldn't have dealt with stop gaps like fitz and mccown. we wouldn't have suffered through geno and petty. If we were to draft the next sanchez, kiss the playoffs goodby for the next 5-7 years again.
I'm not saying Sanchez was good, I'm saying that the blame for what happened doesn't fall on HIS shoulders. You say "had he panned out", well if the Jets had kept up the talent level around him he would have, and likely gotten better (assuming he didn't a near-career-ending injury). But the Jets didn't do that, and they sure didn't take advantage of his skillset - they forced him to play in a system that wasn't ideal for his abilities. Typical Jets: Force a square peg into a round hole, and they're STILL doing that! The blame for this team's problems are found way above any individual player.
W-L applied to players is bullshite, and kind of a lazy analysis. If Cousins was on NE, they'd still be in the Super Bowl right now. Instead he was on a completely dreadful Washington team, and still managed to play well. look at the tape, not the standings.
excellent post. Every QB needs talent around them to succeed, but at some point the QB needs to elevate the talent on the team rather than being enabled by the talent on the team. Sanchez was not capable of elevating, and it set the team back (especially after extending his contract ugh!). Geno was even worse, but at least the draft investment wasn't as steep, and we were smart enough not to extend him. If we take another QB at the top of the first round, we better get it right or we'll be screwed for years.
I don't how many of you read this article that's linked at the front of this forum: http://turnonthejets.com/2018/01/new-york-jets-kirk-cousins-question/ But it pretty well lays out the pros and cons.
I do look at the tape of Cousins as I’ve done since his days playing for my favorite college team.He wasn’t worth 30 million when he was 25 much less now. I’m not suggesting W-L record is anything but superficial within his evaluation. However when he’s not a sure bet To justify his price tag BASED on the tape & then you consider the record,it only cements the apprehension
I agree they most likely do the right thing. They will either waste the 6 pick on an overrated bust ( Completely wrong. Hackenburg came from a big school (Penn State) where he didn't win anything and wasn't impressive. Ferguson was tremendously successful on a team that was not stacked with talent (Memphis). https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/riley-ferguson-1.html https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/christian-hackenberg-1.html Hackenburg college stats: ---------------------------------------------G- Cmp Att Pct Yds Y/A AY/A TD Int 2013 Penn State Big Ten FR QB 12 231 392 58.9 2955 7.5 7.4 20 10 2014 Penn State Big Ten SO QB 13-270 484 55.8 2977 6.2 5.3 12 15 2015 Penn State Big Ten JR QB 13 192 359 53.5 2525 7.0 7.2 16 6 Ferguson college stats: 2016 Memphis American JR QB 13 280 443 63.2 3698 8.3 8.8 32 10 2017 Memphis American SR QB 13 299 474 63.1 4257 9.0 9.7 38 9 As you can see Ferguson blows away Hackenburg on every possible metric. Hackenburg threw 48 tds in 3 years as a starter. Ferguson threw 70 tds in two years as a starter. I watch a lot of college football - this kid can play.
Well I'm not sure any player is worth 30M, but the cap keeps going up, and so do the contracts. Overall I agree with your cap concern. I'd want a front loaded contract that the team can move on from in 2-3 years should he not live up to the cost. But W-L I don't agree with as a factor, giving the team he is coming from. Did you know that Cousins is top 5 ALL-TIME in completion %, with 65.5 percent? And that was done on bad teams, with bad offensive lines, and marginal offensive weapons. That to me is very encouraging, especially if this team can build something around him (it's a big IF i know).. fwiw, the top 5 all-time completion percentage QB's: Drew Brees, Chad Pennington, Kurt Warner, Kirk Cousins, Peyton Manning One thing the other four all have in common , they were able to succeed on multiple teams! That's a testament to their abilities at the position, and a pattern I fully believe Cousins will follow.
you have t not look at the 30 million number. you have to ask yourself if he's worth other Wbs that set the market becuase their pay is directly relative to the cap. those QBs would be stafford eli flacco ryan carr if he is as good as those, then by design he is worth the 28-30 million the cap dictates. rememebr when rookie QBs drafted 1st overall were making more then most Qbs in the NFL? it was insane but that was how it worked. luckily the NFL added a rookie cap to fix it
Not at all. He was injured, and whatever ability he had was sharply reduced after that, so using his post-Jets performance is apples and oranges. But again, WHOSE fault was it to let the talent he needed to vanish? Whose fault was it to ask him to play in a system that didn't fit with his skillset? And whose fault was it to not recognize that he wasn't going to deliver under those conditions an failed to make the necessary changes? Hint: NOT Mark Sanchez.
It’s bigger than the price tag & cap implications. It is prohibitive in that regard but I mainly use that as a fatal argument against the idea that there is too much risk in taking a QB early in the draft; There’s just as much If not more risk long term if Cousins busts. However I really don’t care about risk at this point. All I care about is seeing winning football & a passing game that isn’t embarrassing every week.If I thought Cousins was a dynamic playoffs every year capable of winning it all anytime QB I’d be all in on paying 35-40 mill whatever it took. Signing Cousins ends the team’s short term quest of finding a long term solution. This is our shot to finally get it right.I don’t trust the franchise to prioritize QB or offense unless their feet are held to the fire like they are right now.In my opinion Kirk is not the answer & ends doing the “hard right” just as well.
You should just take those players in bold out your list. Don't ever ever compare Kirk Cousins to quarterbacks who took a team to a Super Bowl. Compare him to Stafford? Yes. Both about to be 30 years old and still have not won one playoff game. I don't even think you should compare him to Derek Carr, because he's 4 years younger and still growing. People who watch Cousins in his big games know what Cousins is, and it's nothing special. Signing Cousins is settling. Settling is what desperate people do. I hope Mac isn't desperate enough to show the fqb money to Kirk Chokesins.
I've been singing the praises of Furguson for a while now.. the kid played in a pro style offense in Memphis. Call me nuts but even if they draft a QB @6 I'd still grab this kid in the 4th round if he gets that far.
I'm sorry but you can't make excuses for players just not being good on the jets. it's a "SOJ" response. it's funny because plenty of young talent has done well with us. anderson was a UDFA and in his 2nd year was playing at a pro bowl level. kearse had his beast season as a pro with us. ASJ is reviving his career. brink and mangold were day 1 studs for a decade for us. david harris was a day 1 stud for 8 years for us. maye, williams, and adams all look great. put it this way, there are 256 players drafted every single year there are also usually at leays another 50 or so UDFA signings so lets say every year 300 new players come into the NFL there are 53 players on a roster and 32 teams so 1696 players (not including PS and IR) So essentially you have about 1700 jobs with 300 new people fighting for them every year. the sucess rate of draft picks is very low especially at the QB position. some make it, some don't.
Hmm. Ok. We'll see. Look, I've just never loved Cousins and never been overwhelmed watching him play. I really don't think he is as good as you guys seem to think he is, and consequently, I don't think he is worth anywhere near the 30ish M per season it will take to sign him. Also, I just think it's a very bad sign that Washington isn't desperate to resign him. From the way you guys write about him, he's apparently all they have. And I don't buy the Redskins are incompetent angle. Sure, they are incompetent. That doesn't mean they are going to willingly let a stud QB (who they drafted) go to another team in free agency. They obviously don't love him (Go watch Jay Gruden's comments on him at the end of this past season, which are widely available on YouTube). I'm sorry, but Washington's reluctance to just lock him up really bothers me and only further serves to reaffirm my suspicions that he just isn't THAT good. Most importantly, I really want us to draft our own guy and use all of our cap room to improve the rest of the team. If we sign him, I hope I'm wrong about him.
You nailed it but what I didn't like is that Macc just put his hands in his pockets and said oh well. He should have kept drafting QB's. They knew Petty and Hackenberg weren't the answer or even respectable. So they went out and sign McCown a known bum to try and cover up. But they passed on 2 QB this past draft and that cannot ever happen again.
Would they? I'm not sure Cousins could have brought them back the way Br*dy did (and does regularly). I'm still undecided about him personally. Is he a guy who is a winner, or someone like Rivers/Stafford who looks good but doesn't get the job done when it really matters. I can see both sides on this. I think it is likely irrelevant anyway, going by the recent reports about him I'd think Denver would be Cousins' likely destination, which would probably help the Jets land a QB, especially if the Browns take Allen.
I've got fingers and toes crossed cause I heard on Sirius NFL radio a Bowl scout said the Browns see Josh Allen as the next AFC North Big Ben and absolutely love the kid
