His ceiling is way lower based on what? I saw Russell Wilson play a lot in college both at NC State and Wisconsin, and Mayfield is a MUCH better prospect imo. I also saw Brees play a lot in college, liked him, wanted the Jets to get him, but it's been so long ago that I can't compare him with anyone. Just looking at their stats, Mayfield blows both Brees and Wilson out of the water. Mayfield also showed steady improvement from year-to-year. Not so with Wilson and Brees, they were uneven.

Ruling out his freshman year (he only appeared in 8 games and threw 19 passes, his stats were not good at all), Brees' completion percentage went from 63.4 his sophomore season to 60.8 to 60.4. His yardage totals went backwards from 3,983 to 3,909 to 3,668. He had marginal improvement in his YPA from 7.0 to 7.1 to 7.2. His TDs went from 39 to 25 to 26. His interceptions went from 20 to 12 to 12.

Wilson's completion percentage was uneven at NC State going from 54.5 to 59.3 to 58.4, then took a huge leap in his one year at Wisconsin 72.8. His yardage totals went from 1,955 to 3,027 to 3,563 to 3,175. His YPA went from 8.2 to 8.3 to 6.6 to 11.8. His TDs went from 17 to 31 to 28 to 33. His interceptions went from 1 to 11 to 14 to 4.

Mayfield started 8 games at Texas Tech before he was injured. His completion percentage went from 64.1 to 68.1 to 70.9 to 70.5. His yardage went from 2,315 to 3,700 to 3,965 to 4,627. His YPA went from 6.8 to 9.4 to 11.1 to 11.5. His TDs went from 12 to 36 to 40 to 43. His interceptions went from 9 to 7 to 8 to 6.

    Drew Brees college stats:
    Career completion 61.1%
    11,792 yards
    7.0 YPA
    90 TDs
    45 Interceptions
He had double digit interceptions every year except his freshman year

    Russell Wilson college stats:
Career completion 60.9% (57.8% during 3 years at NC State, 72.8% during 1 year at Wisconsin)
11,720 yards (8,545 at NC State, 3,175 at Wisconsin)
7.9 YPA (7.2 at NC State & 10.3 at Wisconsin)
109 TDs (76 at NC State & 33 at Wisconsin)
30 Interceptions (26 at NC State & 4 at Wisconsin)

    Baker Mayfield college stats:
Career completion 68.5% (64.1% at Texas Tech, 69.8% at Oklahoma)
14,607 yards (2,315 at Texas Tech & 12,292 at Oklahoma)
9.8 YPA (6.8 at Texas Tech & 10.6 at Oklahoma)
131 TDs (12 at Texas Tech & 119 at Oklahoma)
30 Interceptions (9 at Texas Tech & 21 at Oklahoma)

Nah, Wilson was a better NFL prospect then Mayfield. That senior year he exhibited everything you wanted in a QB. I watched a lot of Wilson that year, thought he was too short, but far more athleticism in comparison to a Mayfield. He also played in a pro style offense, came out w/ superior arm strength and I would say he was a better leader as well. That's on and off the field. Mayfield does trump Wilson in stats / productivity throughout college so I guess that counts for something

My original comment regarding Wilson and Mayfield was not to say one was better than they other. I just didn't think it was a good comp. Wilson is a lot more athletic, has a stronger arm and came from a pro-style offense. The only thing they have is common is that they are short. I can see the Drew Brees comp, but that would be the best case scenario in the most ideal of circumstances.

That wasn't directed at you at all btw and I agree, it is lazy to compare the 2. Brees would be a good comp if he gets to his ceiling. Similarities in terms of where they came in terms of offense too. Brees w/ the Purdue spread.

People should keep in mind that there are no "sure things" - at ANY position, and that includes guys like Luck, Manning 1 & 2, Elway, Rodgers, et. al. A lot has to do with the schemes they're asked to play, and the surrounding talent, But because there isn't a guarantee, it doesn't mean the Jets shouldn't roll the dice. If they don't hit, pick the dice up and roll again. Of course they need to do their due diligence, but if there's a QB who shows a good chance of becoming their FQB they need to get him. But given that Macc and Bowles thought that 2 Safeties last year were more important than getting a QB when they didn't have any proven ones on the roster, I wonder if they'll take a risk for QB this year.

100% agree. We can compare and talk ceilings all we want. I remember all the low ceilings talk of Deshaun Watson last year. Can't remember one post actually saying he had a high ceiling and how he had a poor arm etc etc. Well look at Watson. No one knows what Mayfield will be...a bust but maybe just maybe he plays like in college that would be FQB level if he could apply those stats to the pros.

Mayfield is not gonna be a bust. His height limitations may hurt him like they have a lot of other shorter QBs, and he may wind up being only a solid starter, or at worst a very good backup, but there's no way he's gonna be a bust. He's too smart, too hard a worker, and too talented.

This looks like a list of excuses used for drafting Hackenberg.

I agree, but supposedly he is thought of as one of the top QB prospects. We'll see how much or how little NFL scouts and teams think of him when the draft rolls around. I can see his talent, but he scares the bejeebers out of me, especially after Hack.

I’m terrified of a raw potential pick. You can’t make those at 6. Hopefully we get one of the other QBs because I want nothing to do with him.

If you swapped Mayfield and Allen, Wyoming wins 3 more games this year, and Oklahoma wins 3 less...

I love the idea of a big bodied, power arm qb... but the tape doesn’t lie. Allen scares the heck out of me too...

With Allen at QB, I think Oklahoma would win a less than 3 less games. I think it would be more like 4-6 less games. While Oklahoma's OL and offensive skill players were a LOT better than Wyoming's, I think you're underestimating the value of what Mayfield meant to that team and the leadership role he had.

How is this even remotely possible? Wilson went in the third round and Mayfield has a potential high first round projection. I would rather have Mayfield - think he's more of a pure passer, where Wilson I don't think could ever carry an offense.
Wilson is more athletic and very smart though.

Wilson IMO is the better play-maker. Every-time I saw him play that year in Wisconsin, I was in awe. I think Mayfield might have a better handle in terms of playing quarterback, but I still would prefer Wilson predraft. Elite arm, good accuracy down the field and was athletic. You could argue Wilson opened the door for Mayfield.
