It plays a role but these are numbers that very few college QBs have ever put up before. And Oklahoma isn’t just running a bunch of bubble screens like some spread offenses, he’s attacking down the field on a routine basis. He’s just deadly accurate.
71.2 CMP% 4205 YDS 42 TDs 6 INT 71.0 CMP% 4340 YDS 41 TDs 5 INT One stat line belongs to Baker Mayfield and the other to Geno Smith in his one and ONLY season in the Big 12.
The main difference here is more so in the way these statistics were accrued. Baker Mayfield, for instance roughly targets receivers 20+ yards down the field to the same degree as he does receiver behind the line of scrimmage. Geno avoided coverage in college because that's what the system called for. Oklahoma's defense tries to make mismatches and create open receivers with their schemes like any system does, but Baker challenges coverage at all ranges on the field pretty evenly at a high level.
Mayfield should be our guy. No more prototype projects. Give us a gamer with leadership and fire. Also one thing about the Geno vs Mayfield comparison: Geno was arguably working with better talent his final year as many of Oklahoma's high quality players went into the NFL last year, and Mayfield put those ridiculous numbers up regardless. If you want someone who won't be phased playing in this market, Mayfield is the guy (Geno certainly was not). Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
Agreed. Think the fact that his statistics have gotten better year after year indicates that mayfield’s game continues to get better and better. Although an asshole at times, I think his fire for the game is something a young team can build around. That kind of attitude is infectious. Obviously there’s a fine line between being too riled up and fiery but nonetheless, wouldn’t be mad at all if jets landed mayfield. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I think Mayfield needs to improve control of his attitude without losing it. What you don't want with this guy is a player that lets other teams get in his head. He should be the one getting in other teams heads. Otherwise, he's not an alcoholic like Manziel was and not an entitled diva like Rosen is. Mayfield has a chip on his shoulder and you want that in your players. You want a fearless player. Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
New Year’s Day should be a very telling day in the Baker debate. The “there’s no defense in the Big 12” argument would take a huge hit if he went on the biggest stage and tore up an SEC defense allowing 13 PPG and 158 passing yards per game. Should be interesting...
Well big rehearsal day for Baker Mayfield in the Rose Bowl, this is also following on from the Peach Bowl game, I can only give it 30-45 mins, up at 4.30am for work, xmas over lol
I’ll be watching and I’m sure after the game there will be dedicated film breakdowns of the game. Very interested to see how he does Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Sitting waiting and they win the toss and defer, arse longer to wait to see him throw the damn ball lol Sounds like he has a cold as well apparently.
