I used to have one years ago. I shot it at the range once. Never would have thought that as a fully auto round. Just a sniper type
My BnL has a AR variant that fires .308 ammo. Had a pretty good kick to it but I can only imagine how much of a punch that round carries with it.

I've only seen one video of the attack, but I thought it sounded like the 1st bursts were larger rounds, then you can hear him switch over to smaller round.

I think he got them legally. The police dept presser,they said a gun shop owner had come forth but they didn't give detail. But also said there were other facts involved in his obtaining of the weapons. Most likely after market modification to make them fully auto.
Most of the sounds I heard sounded like standard AR-15 rounds, but looking at the height and distance involved I just figured he must have used a heavier round at some point. A full auto .308 in the hands of a demented mind is a scary thought.
a full auto 7.62x39 (AK) or a .308 would be very difficult to control, especially for a 64-year old. An AR-15, on the other hand, doesn't have that much recoil and would be manageable in full auto.
