Good post, except the part about running the football. You have to put yourself in the shoes of a D coordinator facing the Jets offense (or what passes for an offense.) If I'm a D coordinator, I would force the Jets to beat me passing. That means I would concentrate my defense to shut down the Jets running game. As you said, they are not elite runners, so the likelihood of Forte, Powell, etc., having success against a team aligned to stop the run is remote. If by some miracle the Jets have success passing, I make the adjustment, but I'm betting it will be the weakest aspect of the Jets offense.

As for the defense, it depends on the ability of the offense to keep the defense off the field. If it's going to be constant three-and-outs and turnovers, I think you're right, the defense will suffer. This season, if the offense can sustain a drive to within FG range, that would be cause for celebration.

If you mean by surprise, bad. Sure I'll buy in.

Surprise as in do well enough to pick outside the top 10? That's not surprising, that's Jetsing.

I don't mean to sound like a darksider by any means, but I hope they go 0-16 or whatever record they need to get the 1st pick in the draft next year. Now I know people say its defeatist and there's no guarantee we'll get a good QB, but there's no way we will ever be successful in this league without one. It seems like every other year we go into the offseason not knowing who our QB is.

I have never felt this way about tanking a season before a down has been played, but this time is different. I hope our young guys progress and we have a promising future at every non-QB position, but if we don't get our QB next year, I can see us continue to be a bottom dwelling team for a long time. My question is, would you rather suffer for 1 more year or for several?

    Actually, I would reverse this:

"Worst case scenario is 6-10. BEST is 2-14."

Or anything above 3 wins is worst case really because it will take them out of "Darnold Territory" (or whoever the best QB next year is). And really, they might have to go 0-16 to guarantee the 1st pick, and they've never done that in their entire history

I believe a few misunderstood me with my original post.

If you go back and read it I stated that while I believe this year's team will be competitive and surprise some with their play, I also noted that they would not make the post season and probably would not finish with a winning record even.

By 'surprising', what I mean is that they will not be a dog-ass ugly football team through the 16-game regular season as predicted by the majority of the media as well as the majority of fans on this board.

I think this will be a fun team to watch this season, and yes, I believe they will exceed the 2-3 win predictions and they will eclipse last year's 5-win total as well.

I see a 6-7 win team playing an exciting brand of football that bodes well for ensuing season's and provides hope for the future as we continue to build.

Yes, I stand by my feeling that the 2017 NY Jets will surprise people.

At the end of the day, our win loss record doesn't make a difference. We're not making the playoffs or winning a super bowl, what matters is how well does this team perform. Do they constantly get blown out by teams or are they competitive and playing with heart? If it's the latter then this will be a successful season.

The Jets would be wise to use the Knicks as an example as to how to fuck up a shot at a really high dp. The Knicks should have used the Philadelphia model and tanked but nooooo, they had to show up for 15 games and look what happened.. The 2017 Jets should be in full eval mode. If neither Hack nor Petty can cut it, then tank for a shot at the #1 overall. Nothing short of a top 3 pick will be worthwhile. Before I read it, winning more than 3 games is meaningless and is the worst possible outcome of 2017. No one really cares if Bowles gets fired except Bowles and he's the wildcard in this. As far as the $mil mentor goes... His ass should be gorilla glued to the f'n bench. Nothing else should be acceptable to the GM, Owner and Fans. We need a Qb, not a mentor.

Point being, either we play the game by the new rules, That is, the team with the best Qb usually wins the prize OR, we shelp along without a FQb wondering why we can't compete for the VLT.

Its only been 48 years.. No rush, no pressure..

I'm not even saying I disagree with you, although I do hate to see my team lose every single week, but I just don't think this team is 1-15 type bad. I see 4-12 at worst, which could be enough to take us out of the quarterback hunt in the draft. I could see this team winning 6-7 games. Not saying that it is a good thing, but I just don't see a 1 or 2 win team that every body seems to be banking on. Do you really think we'll go 1-15? We are better than last year and we managed to win 5 games.

Pleas stop using this word on this forum. Better yet, as an Admin, ban it from being used here at all. I think that "T-BO" thing was banned, why not the "m" word?

    Hi R665

We are a 6-10 team. If things go in our favor we can go 7-9 or even 8-8 but this will not help. Our floor is 4-12. We need to deliberately lose to go 1-15. Trade Sheldon and Decker. Let Hack play from the beginning. Go 1-15 deliberately.

I don't mind trading Sheldon although it hurts to get no value back from him. I would like Decker to mentor the young WR's but that whole concept might be overrated so I'm down with trading Decker.

I am still baffled by the fact that we payed 6 million for Mccown, about 6 million more than anyone else would have payed for him. The scariest question is "why pay him that much if he is going to be a backup?" We should absolutely start Hackenberg or even Petty. If both those guys are as bad as I think they are, we very well may be a 2 win team. As much as it will suck to watch us basically forfeit games every week, especially as a season ticket holder, if it really means its for the greater good, so be it, I am on board.

I kinda like predictions- but I wonder why

There must be some psychology behind it. Maybe the need to feel important.

Before each season I tell anyone who will listen (no one) what will happen
Before each game I tell anyone who will listen (no one) what will happen
Before each drive I tell anyone who will listen (no one) what will happen
Before each snap I tell anyone who will listen (no one) what will happen

The only surprise this team would make is not losing more than 10 games. Their best receiver is gone and not replaced as is their best QB as bad as he was, their center is gone, their LT is gone, their CBs are gone as bad as they may have been..this isn't the Yankees where the kids will surprise you.

I can see the Jets winning 8 games. They usually do that when it's a good year to draft QB early.

Then they lose 12-14 games when there is nothing but shit for QBs at the top of the draft the following year.

You're looking at it the wrong way.

If Jets go 1-15 and secure the top draft pick, all gold-chip QB will decide to postpone or cancel their NFL carrier.
To play another year in college, join military, scared of concussions....

But the truth is, Jets can't have nice things!

I think "backup" has always worked just fine; so has "coach." But that's two different guys.
