Rich Gannon came to a 1999 Raiders team that had one of, if not the best offensive lines in football, two veteran WRs in Tim Brown and James Jett, and a reliable, capable, but unspectacular, running game with Jon Ritchie clearing the way for Napoleon Kaufman and Tyrone Wheatley. The defense was nothing to sneeze at either. A half-decent QB was just the missing piece-- Jeff George, Wade Wilson, Donald Hollas, Jeff Hostetler, and Billy Joe Hobert weren't quite getting it done. But hell, Jeff George got them to 8-8 the previous year, despite being the worst fit ever for a West-Coast Offensive System, so clearly they didn't need a superhero performance from any QB.

actually the year after losing gruden they made the SB but lost to gruden and the bucs since gruden knew the offense to well and the bucs defense was a step ahead all game

If Hack impresses and looks like he could be the answer and we still get a high pick it would be the best case scenario for us. We could command a kings ransom from someone looking to trade up if the QB class is as good as advertised.

While I don't doubt any of what you say, the fact is that they succeeded with Gannon and Gannon's stats took a quantum leap forward under Gruden. Hostetler, George and Wilson had talent and played well elsewhere. I think that's where chemistry, timing, and "luck" (actually a combination of those two things and having the solid team around him) that enabled things to click with Gruden, Gannon and the Raiders. Sometimes, it's just a matter of putting one's ego aside, or not getting in the way. I think we fans often tend to overlook or dismiss that and not give HCs or QBs the credit that they deserve. Gruden helped build the Raiders into a SB-caliber team. He then took a Bucs team that had failed to make the SB, and turned them into a SB winner. Did either team make or win the SB in the following years? No. Even though Gruden wasn't able to repeat that success with the Bucs, I think he deserves more credit for being a good HC than many here are giving him.
