Admittedly I may be looking at this wrong, but if you think he would be good enough to take with your 2nd pick - and I'm making an assumption that may be wrong also - because you think he can be the FQB and be a starter this year, why not take him with your 1st pick? Is it because you think you would be missing out on a player who could make a bigger impact? If so, I would counter by saying there is no position that makes a bigger impact than QB. And whoever you didn't take with your first pick, it's likely that a nearly equal player could be taken with your second. I guess what I'm saying is that if you think you can get your FQB now, why gamble on missing out on him? Is the value/impact of the player you want to take first instead so much greater than the risk of losing your FQB?
I think OJ is every bit worth a #6 pick, but I do like your alternate selections - they would instantly transform the "O" which is what this team desperately needs. If I had to "sacrifice" Howard for that I wouldn't hesitate.
Jet fans should not strive for a 1 and done, that's what I see in your post. Jet fans should want a champion. So if that means getting OJ Howard or Malik Hooker or Foster and continue to get the best available players that are coaches and players can utilize correctly, I am on board with that. I want to see the Jets get past the AFCCG, not be a 1 and done team. Next season, then you go after a running back. Running backs are a dime a dozen. Again, I am not a fan of any of the QBs in this draft. Heck Joe Mixon is a very talented back you can get in the 2nd round, there are RBs in the 2nd and 3rd.
I'm not sold on watson being a franchise QB personally, I also have to respect the draft boards as well. he's not worth the 6th overall pick. I also don't think any QB we draft will be a dak and start right away and kill it. I think fournette is a day 1 and 6-8 year guaranteed stud player and those don't come along very often. I think we can get a QB in the 2nd round with not much drop off from getting one in the 1st (take your pick, trib will be gone. watson, mahomes, kizer, peterson are all pretty close IMO and one will be there when we pick in the 2nd round most likely at least 2 or 3 of them) and none of them are a huge drop off from trib. But with fournette after him there will be a huge drop off with cook and then an even bigger one with the rest of the top guys (mixon, kamara, mccaffrey) So the way i see it is (assuming trib goes top 5) we could get a decent Qb at 6 and a decent RB in the 2nd round or a Stud RB at 6 and a decent QB in the 2nd round. Overall value i'll take the stud/decent combo over 2 decents
Yeah I'm not saying I'm against howard, I'm just looking at the overall picture of our top 3 picks and how to use them to get the best scenerio of players for us. fournette will be BPA if he's there when we draft for sure, we can get a QB in the 2nd round easy between watson, kizer, mahomes, and peterson) and in the 3rd we can land jake butt to pair with ASJ. that improves the offense a ton already. we can still bring in a veteran WR as well. there are some good ones left in free agency. we already improved the o-line of sorts (i wouldn't mind drafting a lineman or 2 as well) that really just leaves us with issues at CB but I'm aware we can't fix it all in one offseason
it's not striving for 1 and done, it's a step in the right direction. Build with young talent and add in vets too plug holes. if we get one and done in 2018, with the off season we could push deep into the playoffs. I'm just against passing "can't miss" prospects to reach for a decent player. if you keep drafting good, the team will win
OJ Howard isn't just a decent player, he's an extremely good player and one of the better TE prospects to come along in a while as well. I'd rather try and get OJ Howard and a RB like Joe Mixon [a true 3 down back] in the 2nd or 3rd round. That to me is a far better combination pairing then any RB / TE that includes drafting a RB in the first round. For everything AP has done, he is a crappy catcher and even worse at blocking. If Fournette is like AP, I'll pass cause I want a back that can run, protect and catch.
I didn't mean howard as a decent player, i was speaking in general. Still no TE has ever led their team to a SB. Qbs mostly do. even the best TEs are lower impact players. it's just not a super important position. probably one of the least important ones outside of fullback. I'd take fournette/butt over mixon/howard for sure. fournette/butt is like what dallas has with zeke and witten. even if howard is the next tony gonzales it still wouldn't be as good as having the next adrian peterson IMO but you are welcome to yours as well. as long as the player pans out for us i won't throw up a big stink on who we pick. I jsut think the smart money is in fournette or trib depending who falls to us out of those 2. on the plus side at least we seem to all be in agreement now that we should be drafting offense with our top 2-3 picks
Who said Howard would lead the team? We actually aren't in agreement about our first 2 picks being offense only. I'm about best player available that fits a need. Could be 2 defensive players could be 2 offensive players
how many TEs lead their team to victories? hell gronk is the best TE in the NFL, got hurt and the pats still won the SB. graham was a top 3 TE for many years and NO still traded him. Gates has been a top TE since a rookie and rotted his career away in SD because they couldn't find a run game to support rivers and the pass game. Giants won a SB after the cut ties with top 5 TE shockey. I'm not saying the TE position isn't important at all. every position is, but QB is clearly the most important and anything we can do to support him (a run game, o-line, WRs etc) is much more important. a guy like howard may see 4-5 balls a game along with the other 3 Wrs playing most of the game. But a guy like fournette would touch the ball 20 times a game easily. keep the defense off the field and give us more managable 3rd downs. the draft is very defense heavy. outside of fournette the rest of the top 6 players are safties and DEs. the top 10 consists of 3 offense (trib, fournette, howard) and 7 defense and 4 of them being DEs and I'll be damned if we take another DE, that would probably piss me off. that leaves lattimore, howard, and hooker as the other potential choices. personally I just don't see any reason to not take trib or fournette if one of them is available. If both are it'll be a hard choice for sure. I mean when was the last time we went offense with our 1st pick? sanchez 9 years ago? it's time to buold the offense up. doesn't help that our last 2 2nd round WR are busts (smith is so far) but we did get enunwa and anderson so it's not all bad
shannon sharpe comes to mind. ask pitt fans about heath miller. so you want to get someone to support the qb? like o line help or run game help or wr help yet you fail to realize the oj does all those things at a high level. outside of a qb or a lt which are not good options at 6 no one player will effect the offense more than oj will. you are just looking at statsand not what the player brings away from the ball.
The assessments I've seen/read say the one big difference between AP and Fournette is that Fournette CAN catch and block. I prefer SolidGoldBowles plan, but whichever way they went, SGB's or yours, I wouldn't cry...both would upgrade the "O" significantly.
I understand it. I know that having a TE that could block will help us alot. as well as having another reliable 3rd down receiver. I just think jake butt can do the same for us 2 rounds later. The stats on howard scare me (and same with trib as well but still) i mean taking the combine guys who stats were low has not worked out for us (see stephen hill and vernon gholston) at 6 overall the only one with a proven track record for offense will be fournette. his stats were out of this world and his film is one of the best ever for a RB. well above zeke and gurley who both were high picks recently. and lok how much having zeke helped dak and the dallas offense, even with witten being old and not as good as he once was and even with dez being an overrated headache. dak and zeke and the o-line carried that team. shannon sharpe had john elway BTW and terell davis and his 2k yards on that team. hell even elway couldn't win a SB until he had the run game with TD going for 2k+ yards. marino never had a run game and never won a SB despite being a top 3 QB all time
Assessments, at least you got the first 3 letters right. The Vikings didn't do a lot of throwing to AP because he's one of the best runners in NFL history. Fournette will never, ever approach the ability that AP had and has in his entire career, bet on it. And Fournette's receiving ability is kind of hindered at the pro level because he is a gigantic target for the increasingly fast defenders in this league. And he gets hurt with unfortunate frequency. I'm going out on a limb and saying that he goes to a shitty situation (hopefully not the Jets) and busts like a weak balloon. I'm not going out on much of a limb by saying that he'll never compare to AP.
Not to mention even peterson would be hard pressed to get a 2 yard gain behind the line we are about to throw out there this year.
howards film matches his combine and everyone, but you apparently, accepts that he was underutilized in the passing game. saba didn't mind running behind him though and the film of him catching shows good hands. fournette,at best imo, will have 2 good years, and will have to be part of a committee approach due to mileage and injuries.
sorry bubba, but I think selecting a TE at #6 is a waste of resources for this team...... but I also agree with byz's opinion about Fournette....... injured college "kids" = injured NFL players. Too much hype on him already imo
