Because Petty can't hit an open Anderson to save his life. I know some people complained about Gailey but the past two years I saw more open Jet receivers than I saw under Schotty's 7 year term. I can't count how many times there was an open Jet receiver last year, only to be completely missed by whoever was the QB. Cutler has his issues, but he won't miss a wide open WR streaking down the field.
And for that "improvement", they'll maybe win another game or two - just enough to take them out of the running for a top 3 pick in 2018, and at teh cost of Cutler's salary and the lack of further development of Petty or Hack. No thanks.
14 losses won't be gut-wrenching. 11 losses will be the crappiest possible result that a bad team could produce next year. If there is a QB in the 2018 draft and the Jets have no shot at him Woody might as well sell the team because he will never convince people to buy in on the team after that. That's the decade out of the playoffs no-hope reality that the Bills are living now and we will have years to go to complete it but they will be years we're going to see whether we want them or not. There's no percentage in being a poor team in the NFL at all. There's no lottery to get lucky in to get the #1 pick. You want that pick in a golden draft with a franchise QB available you have to earn it.
the jets and cutler at this point are basically 2 drunk ugly people lowering their standards for a 1 night stand cause getting laid by someone ugly is better then getting laid by nobody LMAO
I still think that it's going to be almost impossible for the Jets to only win 2 games, let alone none. Bowles will be trying to win every game he can - I know that's not saying much - but look at last year. All he had to do was start Petty or Hack sooner and they would've been drafting in the top 3 at least. And assuming that they've improved their talent - or least their attitude - they will likely win 4-5 games which will drop then out of the "Suck For Sam Sweepstakes". I completely agree with your statement I bolded, but I disagree that the Jets can "earn" the top pick. They need to improve the team the old fashioned way: Establish a blueprint for success, which SHOULD start with finding a FQB and then building the team around him. At the same time, they need to adopt a team philosophy or how they define themselves, and only take on players who fit that mold. Until they do these two things they will be wandering in the wilderness.
Agreed. I don't want that check book opening up too deep. Also Foles provides a better example of a professional then Cutler to our youngins .
I am one of these fans. I am would prefer tuning in or going to the stadium(for cheap) each week to watch the progression of one of our young QB's rather then watching our "bridge" QB burn. Cutler is a slinger and will shell out his share of turnovers so why not let Hack and Petty try. I don't know why signing a vet(to possibly start) is part of the crisis scenario when the universe knows full well we are not going anywhere next season. I understand the value of a vet QB to a team, especially in a mentor/ example situation but Cutler is not that type of player. The only way I way I see the positive to this is if the front office already knows that Petty & Hack are not our FQB. IMO Petty is already in year 3 so they should pretty much know what they have in him, Hack on the other hand has not been given an opportunity. I want to see his growth, good or bad before my eyes rather than a QB that will just be another name on the list.
Exactly. This will be the Mac&Bowles combo's first and last chance at a rebuild. Not exactly the classic scenario as it's coming in year 3 rather than from the get go. Regardless, this is a year they could use to evaluate Pettenberg, thus going into year 2 of their rebuild knowing the FQB is or is not on the roster. If they are going to build around the FQB, no time, cap space or draft picks should be wasted. Everything needs to fall into place and over paying older vet players is not the way to go. *seems we have also been in touch with Josh McCown's people .. this option I'm ok with. Cheap and could surely mean the kids will play.
One of the things has had me perplexed has been the vitrol directed towards Gailey on this board. Not saying he's a wizard, but the sad reality is he's been the best the offensive coordinator this team has had in a looong time. (not saying much but....) but in regards to Cutler, it wouldve made sense 2 years ago (despite I think he still sucks) but now.... after purging the older higher priced players on the team?
if they can sign him for same money as pickpatrick, or less, i am for it. he has higher upside, a great arm, and serves as decent qb insurance , even if he doesn't start. given the rebuild, i can see his wife and decker's wife being worth the price of a ticket even at a loss. at least you can see something attractive.
the LAST thing i want is another usc qb drafted by the jets. when was the last time a usc qb won anything in the nfl?
I'm really sick and tired of this "lose for a QB" mentality. This is not the NBA where one guy can take you to the Finals. You work to improve the team anyway you can. Also sick of this "we're for sure going to suck in 2017" mentality. That's what losers do. It's why the Bucs and the Bengals sucked for 16 years. We've already gone 6 years without the playoffs, that shit needs to stop. I always ALWAYS want us to win. Besides, if we need a QB so badly, we have a shot at a few in the draft THIS YEAR.
Stop gap Quarterback. I've seen this more than reruns of Big Trouble Little China. Sign him to the mid-level range salary of QBs, he sucks just enough to win us 6-7 games, all the good qbs are gone and we draft a defense player that flames out in around two years. Stop me if this gets too familiar.
that's because no coach or GM wants to go into a season expecting to win 1-2 games. winning 5-6 sounds better. personally If i was big mac and bowles I'd go to woody and say, lets cut dead weight, tank the season draft a QB 1st overall next year and have talent around him and go on a spree.
I'm somewhat of a homer myself so I really get where your coming from and just want to voice My opinions about Yours -not trying to beef: I'm really sick and tired of this "lose for a QB" mentality.-> I really really want our Starting QB for years to come to be on our current roster, but the truth of the matter is we lack talent on the starting tier and talent on the depth and role player tiers. Securing a top 3 pick helps tremendously especially if it means drafting a can't miss player, a worthy QB or a trade or trade down. There's a considerable drop off after the third pick if you go by the Jimmy Johnson chart. If you look at our roster and cap space even before the purge what you will see is age and over paid age. A roster that went 5-11. Considering we have a top 6 pick this year combined with a few other day 2 picks, receiving even higher selections next year makes sense. Even though you can't openly admit your going to Tank .. the time to Tank is now. You work to improve the team anyway you can./We've already gone 6 years without the playoffs, that shit needs to stop. I always ALWAYS want us to win. -> If winning is the MO, this should include a complete rebuild where you build through the draft as the team could end up in the same cycle GM & Coach after GM & Coach. The cycle of piecing together a team of usually older players and or players looking or in line to get a big payoff. A pieced together team will never have the nucleus of a team that grew together. Talent needs to be acquired, young talent, and lots of it. Talent that remains on your team and replaces older talent. Talent that can step up and fill the spot of a starter and either not miss a beat or surpass the former. Talent that can come in and play when we don't want to extend a contract or make a big payoff (hey it's a business) That's something we watch other teams do year after year where we can just get excited about free agency as our major rebuilding tool which gives us a very short windows of opportunity. (Look where we are now) A proper rebuild combined with sustainabiiity can turn this franchise around. We can forget 6 years without the playoffs and Remember 50 years without a Super Bowl. Something has not been working. I'm about winning too but prefer a stable team that can go for the big one year after year just trying to find the missing pieces in free agency and not the core of it. This is not the NBA where one guy can take you to the Finals. -> That is true but if there's one guy who could, he would be the guy with his hands up another guys ass on almost every play. That 1 guy if above average improve your odds tenfold. That guy if a leader can truly bring your team together. Also sick of this "we're for sure going to suck in 2017" mentality. That's what losers do. It's why the Bucs and the Bengals sucked for 16 years.-> Sorry but that's just being realistic and coming to terms with where your team is .. I would just wish that Bowles & Co. could also come clean and admit it. I'd gladly trade 2 years of our team sucking to gain 7 years or more of winning. Besides, if we need a QB so badly, we have a shot at a few in the draft THIS YEAR.-> The jury is still out on Pettyberg and a top 3 pick can reap a handful of players if that's what the front office desires, and if we find out that one of our young QB's is the guy, it will give us the chance to do so. Besides experts say the draft is much deeper in talent next year. Also these QB's will be unrestricted free agents next year. Drew Brees QB NO $24,250,000 UFA - Kirk Cousins QB WAS $23,943,600 UFA Sam Bradford QB MIN $18,000,000 UFA - Matthew Stafford QB DET $17,666,667 UFA Chad Henne QB JAC $3,500,000 UFA - Drew Stanton QB ARI $3,250,000 UFA - Derek Anderson QB CAR $2,350,000 UFA - Brandon Weeden QB HOU $2,000,000 UFA - Ryan Griffin QB TB $1,797,000 UFA - Matt Moore QB MIA $1,775,000 UFA - Scott Tolzien QB IND $1,750,000 UFA - Luke McCown QB NO $1,500,000 UFA - Derek Carr QB OAK $1,342,950 UFA Kellen Clemens QB LAC $1,080,000 UFA - Tyler Bray QB KC $962,500 UFA - Joe Webb QB CAR $930,000 UFA - Jimmy Garoppolo QB NE $870,975 UFA - Tom Savage QB HOU $630,146 UFA - Zach Mettenberger QB PIT $586,279 I'm also sick of losing but this team needs to turn a new page. I'm sick of hoping and discussing an undrafted free agent turns into a starter .. that's how bad the talent on this team is and unfortunately we don't have the luxury of acquiring them steadily year after year, we need MM to do his thing and get talent in lumps. He needs to be creative and or hit on more than half his picks. He is supposed to be good at scouting and for his and our sakes I hope he is.
The idea of losing enough games to get a top draft pick is idiotic. No owner, GM, coach or players will ever buy into that. Nevertheless, that doesn't mean the Jets can't get the top pick if they really want it. It's called "moving up" and has been done many times in the past.
Multiple teams tried in 2012 for Luck but only the Colts were able to manage the trick. For that they followed 2-14 with 3 straight 11-5 seasons and have not been under .500 in the last 5 seasons. We better buy into it. What fan bases don't buy into is long playoff droughts that are self-inflicted by a management team that is too short-sighted to build a real window of contention.
In truth, it's not really the fan base that needs to buy into this, it's ownership and management. Yes, they can be affected by a loud and demanding fan base, but even with the Idzik situation, how many ticket holders did the Jets lose? Woody and Macc have to have the guts to do what's good for the long term. The problem is, do they even know what that is? I have my doubts.
