I'm not saying the Jets should trade for him, doesn't fit with the rebuild, but trading a disgruntled player who they are willing to tag twice is not a cast off. Cutler being cut is a cast off.
What I mean by "cast off" is what I said: If a team doesn't want a guy, and are willing to trade or cut him, then he's a cast off. If he were really a potential FQB they wouldn't let him go, and if he isn't a potential FQB, given the huge cost it will incur, the Jets shouldn't want him either.
My belief is based on the history of the Jets' horrible QB play. The guy had 4900+ yards and 67% completions with players relevant to 2012 fantasy football. 2x TD/INT ratio over the last 2 seasons. 97+ QBR over the last 2 seasons. Let me be clear. The Jets should NOT over pay for Cousins. The biggest issue people have (along with myself) is that 50% of the available money would be allocated to Cousins this season. That leaves around 20m left for FA and draft picks. The front office needs to be creative and correct in their decisions. Teams with non-dysfunctional coaching staffs and front office personnel would have no issue figuring this out. The collective apprehension people have right now is being misdirected to Cousins.
Thank freaking god there is one jets fan that sees that as well. I am all for the total rebuild and sucking for sam but if the opportunity arises that you can snag a young qb not even in his prime yet that has produced at a high level in the NFL you take it and do not look back. Not that this will happen but I wouldn't be upset in the slightest we traded our 6th round pick away for a franchise qb.
As someone else put it, he earns "Tom Brady money", but he hasn't earned it. Why should we pay that premium with no real assurance he can deliver with what the Jets have, or will have, on their roster? He's a massive luxury for this team.
The Jets have had 2 good quarterbacks in their entire history. And one of them a lot of people would dispute if he was even good. This is how hard it is to acquire a good starting QB. Why would we not explore every possibility that could net us a good young QB?
Tom Brady money is not a good analogy because the Patriots constantly manipulate his contract to their salary cap benefit. Let's not confuse luxury with necessity. Cousins at 19m would be in the company of the following: Tannehill, Cutler, Romo, Stafford, T. Taylor It's essentially fair market value. The Jets should not go above 20m for him. This may ultimately break contract negotiations but then so be it.
Just curious as to how you would label Drew Brees' transition out of the Charger's organization. Was Steve Young a Tampa Bay cast off? There are always exceptions to the rule. ***I don't think Cousins is one, though.***
Cousins is overrated. He's Andy Dalton 2.0, IMO.He's a purgatory QB that you CAN win with if you surround with him ridiculous talent. But once you pay him and the talent around him regresses, his play won't be nearly good enough to justify his contract. Dalton posted great stats in 2016 when he had an All Pro WR, all pro TE, and two other complementary WRS in Sanu and a stacked OL. Once the team's talent reverted to mediocrity, well you know,he became Andy Dalton again. That's Cousins to me
MAYBE...MAYBE he would be the "Answer", but to find out you're going to have to commit a huge amount in cap and draft picks. He's a big gamble with a big price tag. I'd rather gamble on Mahomes or Watson - much cheaper, and IMO more upside.
There;'s no "misdirection" about it. Re-read what you just posted that I bolded. Good god! Are you that certain that Cousins is the long lost FQB that will take the Jets to the SB? If he is really that good, why isn't Washington playing him? And how are the Jets supposed to upgrade the talent around him when they're hamstrung like that? This is a BAD, BAD idea.
What stacked offense are you referring to on the Redskins team? A 30 y/o Peirre Garcon and a 30 year old Desean Jackson who was always hurt? Reed their TE is good as well but the guy was always out hurt. Their starting running back is Matt Jones. That is not some all star line up like Dalton had with Aj Green, Senu and their two running backs. Kirk is a way better qb than you are giving him credit for. Is he perfect? Hell no but he is 28 years old and entering into his prime qb years.
It's not the pick. You give up the pick no questions asked if that's the only thing that matters. It's the long-term contract paying him like we already won the Super Bowl when the contract is likely to keep us from ever getting there.
Opinions are great. It's one of the best things about forums and sports forums in particular. When a topic is no longer subjective it is considered a fact however. The numbers, nor the tape support that Cousins is average or below average. The fact is he's finished the last two years ranked among the top 10 QBs. Guys, if you want your comments to be taken seriously backup your argument with something tangible. Just saying a thing doesn't make it true.
If we can get Cousins and he wants to come here, then I say we go for him. Just get some guys in the secondary and a tackle first by kickoff.
He is way better than Dalton. Dalton has had great weapons, Cousins has not. How are they even comparable? your post goes like this -"Cousins is Dalton. Dalton sucks because x,y,z,etc.... Cousins is just like that." LOL what? how do you figure Cousins is similar?
The hardest thing to fill is the starting QB position. If you can get a top 12ish QB that has 8-10 years of football left in him, you do it, and figure out the rest later. The key from there is hitting in the draft. You can no longer overpay to fill a dozen holes in free agency every year.
