Extremely sad to see Nick Mangold go. Hopefully he ends his career wearing at least one ring. But no matter where he goes, I'm glad he's going to a better situation.
I only brought him up because somebody else questioned about releasing him, seemed confused why the team hasn't.
I agree with you. Long term Mawae. But before Mangold got the high ankle sprain in '11 there was a few years there Nick was really great and maybe better for a short time. Both great and both favorites of mine.
Sucks. Best pro on the team. This means Mac if firmly on the driver seat, likely there is a very significant leash from Woody. As to Bowles, if Mac is driving, HC is probably on notice.
I think the staff is satisfied by the performances given by the understudies this past year .. look for players to be added in the draft, by waivers and undrafted free agents.
It's also hard watching a team suck with overpaid "good players" in the twilight of their careers. It's a business and sometimes it's an unfortunate one, but in the Jets case, it's something that NEEDS to be done. Keeping said players around is actually hurting. Thanks Mangold!
This situation is very close to what the Patriots had to do with Vince Wilfork. Just like Wilfork, Mangold's cap hit was greater than his non guaranteed salary. Maybe he can join Vince over at Houston. Not seeing the Jets as much as you guys, I actually thought he was Mawae until I realized he wasn't years ago. If he does end up playing for another team, it will be interesting to see how much he gets paid. Would he be willing to accept the veteran minimum which is I think in his case 1 Million, otherwise 900K. I am guessing 1 million due to his tenure of more than 10 years. Would he even be satisfied being a backup? I think a very likely scenario assuming he is able to completely recoup from his injuries, especially his ankle is this: A team in the middle of the season will be in a urgent need for a center and their backup stinks. He his hired on a 1 year veteran deal so the team has a chance of competing in the playoffs. Otherwise maybe I am wrong and he will end up with a lucrative deal somewhere.
Bummed to see Nick go. Looking forward to seeing him in the Jets Ring of Honor and hopefully the NFL Hall of Fame. Would love to see the guy catch on with a contender and win a ring.
