Football is the ultimate team game and no team in the NFL is without weaknesses. It is unrealistic to expect a team must fill every hole to win. The trick is to hide those weaknesses with strengths in other areas. When the offense is as inept as the Jets offense, it means that the defense has to constantly be out on the field, with no margin for error. That's a very difficult task for any team and still win. The reason the Pats are so good is Brady is such a dynamic offensive weapon he easily masks deficiencies in other areas. They don't need a top defense to win because their offense puts so much pressure on the other teams offense to keep up. The Jets need to reestablish better balance between offense and defense to get back to winning and I think they can go a long way to doing that by fixing the QB problem.
Don't fret, it's always darkest before dawn. You know where I'm going with this... SB LII, baby! Book it.
Sorry, but imo your bolded sentence is absolute nonsense. It wasn't that Jets fans couldn't handle a rebuild as much as it was that Idzik was totally incompetent and Rex had proven himself to be incompetent and Woody was too blind and ignorant to see it. If Woody had fired Idzik and Rex, hired one of the better GM candidates with a background in scouting and personnel, allowed him to hire a HC, then announced that the team was going to be undergoing a rebuild for the next couple of seasons, and asked for patience, I think he would have gotten it. The only ones who wouldn't have are the clueless ones. Most of the fan base understood that we didn't have a starting QB, a pass-rushing OLB, our OL was getting old, we had little or no speed at LB, our secondary was in a shambles as was our WR corps. Only morons would have objected to a rebuild.
Westie, I like you guy and we often agree, but sorry, on this issue, I think you're being unrealistic at best, and delusional at worst. I don't care if we drafted the 2nd coming of Aaron Rodgers in the 2017 draft, this team as presently constituted isn't winning jack. Even with Rodgers' mobility he has gotten banged up in GB and missed games, and GB's OL is light years better than ours. GB has TEs and Rodgers uses them a lot. We have none. We have one RB who has any speed. Forte is a plodder at this point. Our best WR coasted this season and drops too many passes in key situations. Our 2nd best WR is coming back from not one, but TWO operations this off season, may not be ready for the start of the season, but even if he is, may never be the same player. Our secondary is still a shambles. We still have no pass rush. Our STs are awful. Our CS is probably the worst one in the NFL. Right now, I'd say that there is balance between our offense and defense...they both suck.
Colts were 10-6 in 2010 with Peyton (lost to Jets in playoff.) Peyton injured in 2011, Colts led by Curtis Painter go 2-14. Incidentally, one of the worst team performances I can remember. In 2012 they draft Luck and go 11-5. So you're telling me that everyone on the playoff Colts turned to crap in 2011 and then got better again in 2012. Sorry, not buying it. The difference was QB performance. Nothing else can explain it. Not saying there's enough on the Jets to go to the SB, but there is enough to win. BTW, Forte may be a plodder but he was never a breakaway back. He ran for 813 yards in 13 games. Would probably have run for 1000 if he hadn't gotten hurt.
I don't think the only improvement the Colts made was QB, but I think your point is valid. A franchise QB, even a rookie, makes a night and day difference. That's why it's the single most important upgrade a team can make. Coupled with that fact is that a QB has the longest average length of career compared to any other player. So it makes the most sense to get your FQB in place and then fill the holes around him, not the other way around. Waiting until you have an OL, and RB, and TE, and WR, and oh yeah, a strong "D" before you get your FQB in place defies logic and reality. Who knows if Watson - or any QB - will be "The ONE"? You do your homework and take your best shot. And forget about waiting until 2018 when the QB class is supposed to be so deep. Aside from the fact there's no guarantee any of them will live up to their hype, there's no guarantee that the Jets would get that guy who does, and furthermore, there's no guarantee that the Jets will have a good draft position that would allow them to even draft one one of these "saviors". So the only sensible approach is keep drafting the best QB prospect you can get with your first pick until you strike paydirt. No other player on the field has as much impact as the QB, so that has to be the primary focus until it's filled.
the light at the end of the tunnel is the oncoming kotite express waiting to deliver a 2-14 package next year.
Petty, Hack and a vet for a year. Jets won't find the qb answer this season more than likely, but gotta get more talent on both sides.
Fortunately for me, Football season coincides with the Fall Fishing Run soooo, if the Jets "Play like the Jets", I'll be doing a lot more fishing this fall.
Of course, but will that translate into a better team. more than likely not BUT there is a small window developing for 2018.......the young guys who played this year will be gaining valuable experience. This, coupled with higher draft picks and a favorable cap situation, may give us a pretty good team heading into '18. all this despite what the 2017 record is, all things considered. IF they can garnish it with a good QB, we will have something - kinda similar to the cowboys did this year.
The biggest problem with this team is the selections they make on draft day. Coples, Gholston, McDougle, Ducasse, Hackenberg, Devin Smith, Geno Smith, Pryor, Mike Nugent , Amaro, etc.-- FOR YEARS the jets WASTE picks in rounds 1-3--sure every team misses once in a while but the jets--when the eraser wears out before the pencil, something's wrong--critical offseason for Mac. Time for a rebuild but with way this team uses its draft picks, how can you rebuild around reach after reach on draft day?
Hard to watch a losing team when there are very few likeable players. Most don't seem to care or try, like they're ready to be off the team. Some were doing all they could and I can support them no problem. The rest just suck.
It's a far away proposition...the team has holes everywhere..virtually 0 playmakers, no identity & the HC seems to have no clue.. But all it takes is one good offseason & some playmakers to change a team's overall complexion. If we were to add acouple REAL difference makers...there may be enough of a core already here to have drastic improvement. We could go 100 different ways with what areas of the team we focus on improving. None of it is wrong...there are holes everywhere. That said...I try to improve the talent outside the flanks on both sides of the ball. Speed, agility in space & big play ability. This draft lends to such a skill set & it is easily the biggest hole on this team. There is literally no big play threat or game changers at all. 29 year old Matt Forte or even Thomas Jones..hasn't worked. Get some real boundary talent to give us a chance & go from there. WR/RB/TE/OLB/CB/S/
