If the New York Jets organization announced that it was engaging in a genuine effort to rebuild this team, with the goal of becoming a relevant franchise in three years, how do you think the average Jets fan would react? Do you think they would be supportive of this measure, or would they get impatient and call for heads to roll after going 0-5 during the first season of the effort?
I would be all for it. Tank properly for two or three seasons, get rid of overblown contracts, get rid of lazy vets, bring in someone who has prior Head Coach experience with an eye for talent and draft high each year. Eventually, you will hit the jackpot with a franchise QB and be set for 15 years. Constant mediocrity has been the story of Jets history. Enough 8-8 or 7-9 seasons. Give me 3 straight years of 2-14, 3-13 if that means I will enjoy playoffs for 15 straight years.
Not well. The problem with true rebuilding efforts is that those tend to go on well beyond their expected date. When you have a team of losers, it's very hard to break that attitude. It's one thing to have a down year. It's another to be the Cleveland Browns. A better example may be the Detroit Lions. They're decent now, but look how long it took them to even reach this level of competitive after perpetually rebuilding. Even now they aren't top dog in their own division. The moral of the story is, be careful what you wish for. The right thing to do is find a quarterback the team can build around and once you have that guy, do whatever it takes to make it work. It would be absolutely negligent of the Jets to give up on Petty and Hackenberg before they ever had a real shot all in the name of rebuilding. That's a recipe for sucking permanently. I think fans would be ecstatic over the initial announcement. However, once the season started playing out, most fans would probably start to freak as soon as something didnt go right. The Mehta's of the world would start feeding the fanbase stories, and fans would eat it up and call for everything to be blown up 1.5 years in.
Idzik was rebuilding, and how was that received? STHs invest so much these days that it's difficult to imagine them tolerating a really bad team filled with young players and no names for long. Patience is not our strong suit and many would prefer to watch a mediocre product every year, which means signing lots of veteran FAs.
I think a genuine rebuilding effort would be easier to stomach than the turd sandwich we've been served this season. It's easier to take when you have no expectations of being competitive. I was ready to accept a rebuild when Idzik came in, the problem is they didn't draft well. They also kept Rex in place with all of his bombast and grandiose statements, which muddied the message. It's the lack of a clear plan that frustrates the fan base more than anything. Can't stand for a team loaded with veterans who are playing like rookies.
I think people would accept it because I think we've all come to realize that there is no such thing as a quick fix. The way I see it is if the Jets continue to make some smart draft picks and hire a coach who teaches discipline and playing hard even if we aren't talented, fans will accept it and recognize that the team is on the right path
I think the folks that say it all starts with the quarterback are only partially correct. Having a competent QB is a near necessity, but that doesn't guarantee success. Lots of mediocre franchises have good QB's (Lions, Chargers, Colts, Bengals, Falcons...) The Jets are in rebuild mode, like it or not. After this season they will have a ton of cap space to work with. $166 mio cap for 2017. From highest paid player on down (2017): Wilkerson (18mio): He will stay, but I think the Jets shop him during the offseason. Revis ($15 mio): Likely cut, or a massive paycut and switch to safety. $7 mio in cap savings. Clady ($10 mio): Likely cut. $10 mio in cap savings Mangold: ($9 mio) Could stay, but $9 mio in cap savings by cutting him. Either way Ring of Honor. Decker: ($8.7 mio) Make sure he is healthy, but I think he sticks as alot of his money is dead. Skrine: ($8.5mio) Likely keep, but not because of performance. Only because 5 mio is guaranteed. S Richardson ($8mio) Its either him or Wilk, but one of them goes. B. Marshall: ($7.5mio) 50-50 that he is on the team next year. I'm betting not. Others: N. Folk ($3.5 mio) is gone. $3 mio in cap savings. D. Harris: ($6.5 mio) Likely gone. Ring of Honor for him too maybe 6.5 mio cap savings Breno: ($4.5 mio) Likely gone. $4.5 mio cap savings. Erin Henderson: Gone $2.75 million in cap savings I wouldn't be surprised if 9 starters representing nearly 1/3 the cap ($58 mio) are cut or traded at the end of the year: (Revis, Clady, Mangold, Sheldon (or Mo), B Marshall, N Folk, D Harris, Giacomini, E Henderson) They will keep veterans like James Carpenter, Matt Forte, Bilal Powell, Gilchrist. They will need a massive rebuild of the OL and secondary next year. With some of the guys like Qvale and Iljana stepping into full time roles. Mac is gonna be a busy guy.
While QB doesn't guarantee anything, history says it's the most important component of a championship team. Therefore, why even attempt to rebuild without securing a QB worth rebuilding around.
I think if the team publically stated they were going to rebuild, the fanbase would accept it as long as its not a perpetual rebuild. In other words, you'd have to produce some tangible results fans could recognize. The timeframe would have to be elastic as we all know this FO/CS isn't exactly stacked with talent evaluators/developers.
As precarious as it sounds, the Jets brain trust needs Petty to play well the rest of the season. If he shows improvement and some competency and makes some plays downfield, it would give the fanbase some optimism that they have the ability to evaluate players and were right to sign a guy with upside and groom him for the future. If Petty flames out, the perception would be that they are poor talent evaluators, and Hack is likely a bust as well and they might as well grab Cutler or Romo or whatever retread wants to come to NJ.
Hey we were rebuilding with a win now team this Season right? Someone find me a good Mike Mac quote on going forward. with this team......sigh
Why do the fans need to know? We need to field the best team possible, if it takes a few yrs to get there, then it takes a few yrs to get there. Fans shouldn't dictate this.
They dont need to know... The question was "how would fans respond to an announcement that the team is going into a full rebuild." I think initially they would be ecstatic. I'm not sure what you are trying to say.
I mean like the FO doesn't have to announce they are going full rebuild, they'll just do whats best for the team. In a sense, they are now but they are "trying" to stay competitive. Our cap situation isn't all that bad in the coming years, not much trade value for a Brandon Marshall or Sheldon Richardson. I just don't understand the thread. Tanking is absolute non-sense, it destroys any chance of creating a positive culture in the LR.
No, they would never announce they were tanking or going full rebuild. I would never expect them to. That would be a foolish move. I'm just answering how the fans would respond if they announced, they were rebuilding from the ground up. I think they would respond positively.
Yeah...and what Idzik did was tanking. Nobody should confuse that with a rebuild. He tanked for two years to get Rex out and it led to mutually assured destruction. He wouldn't have even been successful at a rebuild cause he drafted like s*it. No NY team ever wants to admit it's rebuilding even when it is. The Mets never admitted they were rebuilding, the Yankees aren't calling the current overhaul a rebuild though with their money they never really have to rebuild, they can retool dramatically on the fly and still be competitive.
