Sorry, but that is cherry picking at it's worst. You can't base how good a team is by the time of the year you play them, you have to look at their total record for the year. The Jets beat a 9-7 team. I'm not saying the Jets are good, I do agree they were over rated last year because of the easy schedule. I'm fine with tanking the season now and seeing what Petty has to offer at this point. A comeback is still possible but there are too many flaws on the team to over come this, IMO, and many of these flaws were not here last year or were harder to notice because of the record. I agree about Bowles. Something is really wrong on the team, and it goes beyond the QB position. I do think it's top down, starting with Bowles and Gailey. Safety play has been absolutely atrocious, but that doesn't excuse them from having 2 games where they couldn't put up more than 3 points, and getting shut out completely the 2nd half THREE TIMES.
As long as Petty is driving the bus that got us to .500, I am OK with it. Fitz has ZERO future with this team and if he finishes the year at the helm and the team is .500, that will be a major mistake...
I can't blame Woody (or even Macc) for the lack of discipline, poor execution, bad decisions with clock management, terrible special teams, poor redzone play calling, or the poor utilization of talent (Richardson at LB). Macc made some poor choices, no doubt about that. But the product on the field should be much better considering what the Jets have in talent. On paper this team looked very good going into the season. Woody may have influence, and I'm not his biggest fan, but I don't think he interferes as much as folks believe he does. He isn't making play calls or dropping passes on 3rd down, he pretty much just hired Macc and even that he didn't do himself. I don't like Woody at all, but based on what has happened this season, it seems hard to blame him.
I pretty much agree...but you said you "do think it's top down, starting with Bowles and Gailey" ...and Woody is at the top. He signs the checks and hires the GM and is ultimately responsible for the quality of the product on the field...at least over the long term. He's no Jerry Jones, and that's probably a good thing.
When the league recorded the Jets victory over the Redskins, the Redskins were recorded as a 2-4 team, a team BELOW.500. Cherry picking my ass. The Jets did NOT beat a 9-7 team, they beat a 2-4 team. That would indicate that the Jets played them in the PLAYOFFS and beat them. Well, just a couple of issues that come to mind is 1) The Jets could not have possibly faced the Redskins in the playoffs unless BOTH the Jets and Redskins made the playoff and made it to the SB - They didn't. 2) The Jets never even made the playoffs to begin with. But hell, don't let facts get in the way of your delusions...........
LMAO at facts. That is absolutely cherry picking. You can't judge the quality of a team just by the first 6 games. Look at the Chiefs last year. They started 1-5 and ended 11-5. Does that mean that all the teams that beat them in the beginning only beat a 1-4 or 1-5 team and were just garbage? Just stop. Teams are what their final record says they are. Dumb argument to be honest, and I shouldn't have even engaged you. Anyways, Jets are done, so hopefully we can give Petty a few games and see if he can get that chemistry going.
The worst thing that could happen to the Jets is to finish .500. That would be a mirage and set this team back at least a year as somehow, that 8-8 finish will be spun as evidence that this team is on the verge of being a contender which clearly, relative to the elite of the league we are not.
Getting to 8-8 would have to include Petty making a Dak Prescott like impact and that would be a great thing. I see that as next to impossible though, in fact I have a hard time seeing the Jets even win two more games this year. I'd agree getting to 8-8 with Fitz would be a complete waste, not with Petty though.
I think whether or not it's a mirage depends entirely on HOW we get to 8-8. If it's because Fitzpatrick suddenly becomes an unstoppable passer, then yes, it's a mirage. If it's because we get a bunch of calls in our favor and some lucky bounces at crucial junctures and win a bunch of games by 2 or 3 points, it's a mirage. If it's because our offensive line becomes a force to be reckoned with and we start rushing for 400 yards a game...well, that's hard to fake (and insanely unlikely). If it's because our D-line and/or our Linebackers actually start to play the game of football and we end up leading the league in sacks, well, that's hard to fake, too. Admittedly, the road to an 8-8 finish is an unlikely one, and the mirage road is far, far, far more likely than any conceivable road by which the Jets actually become a good football team. But still, the BEST outcome remains to actually strive for that development.
You sure about that? Tebow seemed more like a Tony Sparano move. Woody isn't Jerry Jones. There are a lot of myths out there that people believe as true, just because the media speculated about it. I haven't seen any evidence that Woody forced them to sign Tebow or told Maccagan to bring Revis back, or ordered Bowels to start Fitz instead of Petty (or vice versa) or anything else related to other people's job duties. Maybe he does, I just haven't seen any reason to assume it. BSPN is a prime culprit of this mentality. They speculate about things one week, then repeat them the next week, then refer to them as fact a few months later, taking advantage of fallible human memory. They are sad. They make things true by simply repeating them as if they are and folks go right along.
I live too far away from NYC to have any direct feel on this. It's just my opinion based on my sense that you don't make a move that big, so high in profile, without at least running it by the boss. Just IMHO. Also I don't disagree with anything you said about ESPN. I grow tired of them also. There certainly is a lot of speculation around the whole Tebow/NYJ issue. After a quick look around, there are many reports about Johnson's input. Some stories, both ESPN and non-ESPN have stated he wanted him and others have said otherwise. Now, Johnson did say in August 2013, "I think you can never have too much Tebow," Johnson told CNBC from the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. .." but that may have been just cheerleading. In the aftermath of the debacle, however, all are distancing themselves from the decision. There's even a story in which Johnson claims Tebow was actually forced on him, how he actually deferred to those with the football background. WTF? One thing for certain is that Ryan didn't want him. He couldn't have. Even for as badly as Sanchez struggled, Tebow rarely saw the field. Something's amiss in it all, but we'll probably never really know.
