We should have kept Rex. Also bringing in some retired coach that has been out of the league for almost a decade is not the answer. How about Payton Manning?
I don't think Cowher is coming out of retirement and to be honest with you, he would never consider the jets for a job. He's living the good life making a pretty penny doing TV work. It's the same thing with Gruden. Once you're out for that long its hard to come back and be the same.
I remember how he would run the hell out of Bettis despite the fact the guy wasn't going anywhere. I think we've all had enough of that kind of locked in short sighted garbage to last a few lifetimes, Right now we've got Fitz locking on to 1 a game, a OC who won't do anything other than 5 wide, etc.
It makes no sense to move on from Bowles. I hardly agree with Francesa, but he's absolutely spot on when he says that you have to see how Bowles and Maac respond to this. Wanting to fire one or both now is ridiculous. You could let a good guy walk right out the door. Everyone loved them last year. Now they are struggling and everyone is out to get them. It's ridiculous considering they are 11-11 overall and coming off a 10 win season. Let this season play out. I believe new regimes should get 3 years minimum unless the first 2 are just brutal. We have such an inpatient fanbase and I really hope our owner doesn't just try and be a people pleaser. Cowher would never work here anway for reasons like other posters have said. The first sign of trouble and everyone is going to be calling for his head too. The Jets need to believe in what they are doing and tune out all the noise. That's how teams build stability and long term success., The teams struggling, ok, you can't just fire anyone at the first sign of trouble. Marvin Lewis made the playoffs once in his first 6 seasons as head coach. The team stuck with him and the team has now made the playoffs 6 of the last 7 seasons and have won multiple divisional titles. I know he's struggled in the playoffs but year in and year out the Bengals are a quality team. They have stability and a vision. I'm not saying Bowles is the next great Head Coach. He might not be. I haven't liked his in game decision making this year. But he can learn from those mistakes. But you can't just look at a 6 game stretch early in a guys tenure as a first time Head Coach and decide that you want to fire him and think that's rational. They hired him for a reason. They obviously believed in him. Give him some time.
Bowles has been poor this year but it would be insane to fire him unless this team finishes with 1-3 wins or there's a serious disconnect between the the players/Bowles or Bowles/Mac. Poorly run teams continuously fire coaches after 1 or 2 bad seasons....the Browns are a perfect example of this. No legitimate HC candidate would want this job if they feel like they are constantly on the hot seat.
Bowles has looked incompetent this year and was not all that impressive last year either. Bringing him back next year just delays the inevitable and wastes next year. Also please stop with the over dramatic nonsense of no one would want to come here.
Players have regressed under Bowles, and we're likely entering a rebuilding stretch. Player development is key, and thus far the only players who have made any substantial progress are Enunwa & L. Williams. Given that Williams is in his 2nd year & was considered by many the best talent in his draft, I'm not sure how much credit Bowles deserves for his progress. We have QBs that need to develop, and if the Bowles/Gailey tandem don't appear right for the job, it's better to get them into a new system sooner rather than later.
Please tell me you did not just use Marvin Lewis and the Bengals as a shining example of good management and coaching? Please....
I almost totally disagree. I understand where you're coming from with the two-year thing, and in general, I agree, and it's certainly not ideal to fire a HC after two seasons. That said, I also think the mindset of having to stick with a guy and "hope" he learns and develops is insane. It fits one of the definitions of insanity (keep doing the same thing the same way and hope to get a different result). Bowles has actually gotten worse. He has shown absolutely no signs of learning, growing, improving, or adapting. He is stubborn. Having Mo, Williams and Richardson on the field at the same time and running a 4-3 alignment isn't working!!! We don't have a 4-3 DE and Richardson isn't a LB. None of the Jets DBs can cover opposing WRs 1 on 1 without safety help over the top, and Bowles still is playing the same stupid shit alignments. He has no clue how to use his TOs or how to make adjustments. He can't see what the problems are or if he can, has no idea how to fix them. Listen, I really liked the Bowles hiring. He's a good man, but he's in over his head. That should be clearly evident. In order for him to keep his job, he has to demonstrate that he has a grip on what the team's issues are and how to fix them. He has to demonstrate that he knows how to game plan, adapt the game plan on the fly as necessary, and manage the game. He has to demonstrate that he hasn't lost the team, that he is holding players accountable and has them prepared to play each and every week. More often than not this season, the team has not looked prepared to play. They show no fire, intensity or urgency. They are killing themselves with stupid penalties, mental errors and sloppy play, and that's inexcusable. If players are now dogging it because they have lost respect for Bowles, then he absolutely must go; otherwise, the whole team will go south and it become a toxic environment and the team would have to be almost totally gutted and started from scratch. You cannot allow a situation like that to fester. Any prospective HC who wouldn't want to come here because the Jets decided to cut their losses, wouldn't be the right HC for this franchise. I think any HC who has half a brain would understand the issues here once he watched game film, and would not hold it against the Jets for cutting their losses. He would see a golden opportunity here. The team has some good veteran talent and a number of young, talented players. After this season and the last seasons of Rex, there's no place to go but up. Any HC that builds a winner here could write his own life-time contract. Only an insecure HC would turn down this opportunity.
I disagree. It makes TOTAL sense to move on from Bowles. I agree that those who are saying Mac should be fired are clueless. I don't think Bowles should be fired right now, but I think he needs to show some growth in the job, learning, improvement and a dramatic change in the team's play between now and the end of the season in order to keep his job. In general, I agree with your 3-year "rule" for new regimes, but if a new HC obviously doesn't get it, if the team is getting worse, is unprepared for games, beating itself with stupid penalties, sloppy play and mental errors, then a change must be made. That is even more the case if the HC is losing the locker room, and it appears that he is. Mo and other players seem to be dogging it and just going through the motions. If that is true and Bowles doesn't right the ship and get things back under control, then he absolutely has to go. That kind of situation cannot be allowed to fester and get worse. Bowles appeared to be doing a better job last season. He was making adjustments, pushing the right buttons and the team was responding, but he has regressed this season. I hope he can figure things out. It would be best for the team not to have to go through that circus again. But there has to be reason for hope for improvement next season. If he has lost the locker room, then there is no hope and he must go.
Yeah, how stupid of me to mention a coach with 7 trips to the playoffs, 6 double digit win seasons, and 4 division titles as an example. The Jets couldn't benefit from having something like that. You're right. I'm not using Marvin Lewis. as an example. I'm using the Bengals organization. They've stuck with a coach through some lean years and have been rewarded with success. Yes they've struggled in the post season but that team year in and year out is always good and always loaded with talent. They have a vision and don't make constant panic moves and regime changes. That's the point. And no, I'm not saying the Bengals are great. It's just an example of a team sticking with someone and getting a reward for it. The Jets want to fire and cut everyone at the first sign of trouble. They never ride it out and see what happens. Give this regime a chance to fix things is my point. They hired Bowles and Maac because they felt they were the right guys for the job. What's changed? The record? Ok, so what the Jets are telling you is that they never really believed in either guy then. You hire a guy to help you get through the bad times and hopefully have much more success then defeat. Give them a chance to get through this.
I think what's changed is Bowles has so far proven to be as incompetent a coach as we have seen since Kotite. If that continues there is no way in hell you can bring him back for another year.
