To me, it's not a little thing, though. You get paid millions of dollars to not fuck that up. If Buffalo had somehow recovered that onside kick and scored, we would be probably be talking about one of the worst regular season losses in franchise history, catalyzed by one of the all-tine worst decisions. I have no tolerance for irrefutably wrong game management decisions. I always try to not go too crazy over play-calling. Play-calling is hit or miss. If the play works, we are all happy no matter what was called and if the play doesn't work we are all pissed no matter what. But, game management stuff makes my blood boil. Logic is logic. Get it right or go the fuck home.
I realize Bowles screwed up big time. But had we lost and people started calling for his head, I still would have offered perspective. IMO at this point in time, Bowles's positives significantly outweigh his negatives.
I HATE the defense we went into, that was a heavy prevent. Bascially handed them a touchdown and let them have a chance in hell, compounded by the fact that we didn't go for two. Glad for the win but there are things to be cleaned up, not the best coached game I've seen. Enjoying a W nonetheless.
That one is all on Revis. Goodwin has Olympic speed and Tyrod Taylor throws one of the best deep balls in the league. Levis played that snap like it was going against Greg McElroy throwing to Chansi Stuckey. Revis needs to KYP (Know Your Personnel); which includes himself who no longer possess the make up speed to get away with lazily bail on a fast WR while staring back at the QB.
what positives? outside of cleaning up the penalties, which is no small feat, are their really many? -bad clock management -bad in game decisions -lack of adjusments -poor game planning -players no prepared -no emphasis on protecting the football(lasy year, we will see this year) -doesnt learn from mistakes -coaches scared/plays to 'not lose' second year coach, so he can improve, but as of not, its hard to conclude he isnt a subpar coach. you can nitpick some things from Thursday. but its hard to defend him on keeping 6 timeouts in his pocket and not going for 2. i know there are alot of philosiphies for going for 2, but that one was as clear cut as it gets. 0 benefit of kicking the point after. the best argument against going for 2 there is your scared of turning it over and have them return it for 2 points, which is crazy
We can start with Bowles taking over a 4-12 team that just added a lot of new faces. Usually spending sprees in free agency don't work, no matter how talented the acquisitions are, because the coaches can't get the players on the same page. Yet we didn't have that problem. Then the QB got punched by his teammate. Lesser things than that have sunk locker rooms, but that didn't happen either. Instead we went 10-6 with one of the best defenses in the league, which Bowles ran. A year later and the young talent is developing well, the players play hard for Bowles, and he keeps them in check. For a second year coach, that's pretty damn good.
The guy is 11-7 as Jets head coach after having to suffer through that fuckin BUFFOON Rex for all those years, and we already have this retarded thread posted? SMH
I'm not sure how anyone can reasonably be expected to "conclude" that a head coach who is 11-7 in his first 18 games is "subpar." That's a stretch. I think it's fair to say that Bowles is still somewhat undefined and is still being molded into the coach he will eventually become. We know that he won 10 games in his first NFL season, with a career journeyman as his starting quarterback: Positive We know that he allowed that same team (the hottest team in the league, at the time) to come out flat in the biggest game of the season against a mediocre team and blow a golden opportunity to make the playoffs: Negative I'm not sure how anyone could be particularly passionate about arguing either side of the fence, at this point. IMO, your constant anti-Bowles rhetoric makes you seem biased.
Know how I know Bowles is good? He commands rexpect from other great coaches. See Bruce Arians. Sorry, but I put more stock in Arians opinion than jersey jay.
Critics of Todd Bowles seem to forget a bunch of different aspects. They seem to forget our team is much more disciplined under Bowles thus far than when compared to Rex Ryan. They seem to forget the Jets had one of the best NFL turnarounds under Bowles, during only Bowles 1st season as head coach; going from 4-12 to 10-6. They seem to forget how the Jets, under Bowles (just last year) was one of the best defenses around. 1st in least amount of defensive penalties committed. 1st in first downs allowed. 1st in Quarterback completion percentage against. 3rd in average yards per rush attempt. 4th in total yards allowed. 6th in average yards per pass attempt against. 5th in defensive interceptions. 6th in QB Rating against and 9th in points allowed (behind an awful special teams punting and coverage unit). Also 13th in sacks despite Richardson missing 4 games, Leonard being a rookie along with lack of speed and athleticism throughout his linebacking core. They seem to forget (while harping over his defensive ability) that mistakes happen for example Revis being beat. They seem to forget how much youth & inexperience we have within our secondary with the likes of Calvin Pryor being only 24 years of age as a 3rd year player, Marcus Williams being only 25 years of age as a 3rd year player and Rontez Miles as being only a 2nd year playe, Juston Burris as being only a rookie and let's not forget that both of Dexter McDougle & Dee Milliner were both cut heading into the season due to being draft day busts. How quickly people forget that the likes of Skrine, Gilchrist and Revis as veterans only have 1 year of experience under Bowles system. We're only two games in and Bowles is already being criticized by critics? As if this secondary won't begin to gel as the season progresses? As if these younger backs won't improve with experience? As if we're watching the "finished product" of Bowles secondary? All because of two games with one game coming off a short week? Of course we'll need to clean up against big plays but this is not only pathetic to read but also embarrassing to see a thread shitting on a 2nd year head coach of Bowles caliber; after only two weeks. It's disgusting.
Sure. That's all well and good but you continue to ignore what happens on the field during games which contributed to a loss a week ago and made Thursday's game closer than it needed to be. Adapting to the flow of the game still seems like a learning experience. The potential is there, I'd like to see more confidence displayed in tightening the defense for all sixty minutes and knowing where the hot hand is on offense without being predictable. Weeb was a great coach fifty years ago but that kind of playing it safe today won't feed the bulldog.
He coached conservative Sunday...Offensively. But as you see Thursday night they let it all hang out. With that said hes still better that Rex...and will get better with time management etc. He knows he has a top 5 defense. ..if they do their job he should never have to take risks on offense.
I disagree that bowles took over a 4-12 team. The team bowles took over did not have Geno Smith as the best qb on the roster The team bowles took over did not have antonio allen and darrin walls as its starting CBs The team bowles took over did not have kerley/harvin as its #2 options at WR The team bowles took over did not have leonard williams I agree, alot of new faces. but most of those new faces were veteran pro bowlers, massive upgrades, and even guys bowles coached in arizona. I dont know if id say bowles keeps guys in check either. his starting qb got punched in the face. one of his star lineman cant keep from getting suspended. we have taunting penalties in silly situations. I'm not sure what bowles did that most non-awful coaches wouldnt do. we had a very good roster and a cupcake schedule. In spite of that we blew winnable games, fumbled away games, had games end on penalties to prevent a last chance, and had one of the bigger choke jobs in recent history in a win and in situation in week 17.
to me 11-7 isnt great when you look at the schedule and circumstances. also, im not saying he is terrible. my post was a response to "bowles does so many things so well it outweighs the negative" as mentioned, other then this team cutting down immensly on penalties, i dont see all these positives.
that 4-12 benchmark for measurement to me seems silly. how much of that is bowles and how much of that is Mac/an enormous upgrade in talent combined with a favorable schedule. be honest. what coach would you expect NOT to at least double that 4 wins from the prior year had they been in bowles shoes? look at the teams we beat last year: Browns - 3 wins, mccown injured earlier colts - 8 wins, luck awful last year Phins - won just 6 games Skins - won 9 games Jags - 5 wins phins - won just 6 games giants - won just 6 games titans - won 3 games cowboys - 4 wins no romo Pats - obviously an outstanding team outside of the patriots, which of those isnt a very probable win going in vs. either a poor team or a poor team with a backup/crap qb? lets credit bowles for the pats. that leaves 9 wins. are those other 9 wins impressive? are they great coaching feats? is beating the browns on its backup qb a feat? scraping by a 3 win romoless cowboys? look if you want to argue bowles did a good job or is a good coach arguments can be made. but can we just leave out this "he turned around a 4-12" team narrative? its disingenuis. the team bowles coach did not resemble that 4 win team at all. 5 of the jets 10 best players lasy year werent on that 4 win team. our biggest issues in 2014 were CB, WR, QB. bowles had to deal with none of that as mac bought in revis, skrine, cro, gilchrist, Brandon Marshall, and fitzpatrick. if you want to talk about the coaching job bowles did, and how he contributed to 10 wins, lets do that. but lets leave out the comparisons to the 4 win team, since there really is little resemblence between the two
I thought last year we were ahead of the turnover battle ... fumbles happen though I do think his clock management needs improvement.
fumbles are tough to control sometimes for sure... but the fumbles we had last year were not really the "qb stripped from behind" or " runningback in traffic" types. 7 of our 17 fumbles were WR's getting stripped. and it happened 3 games in a row in one point including twice in washington. we had the 12th most giveaways last season. not horrible, but not great, especially with 12 non-qb fumbles.
I have to give credit where its due, I will see this thread title a thousand times over the next few years. and it was WELL DONE. official crap on bowels thread is probably one of the best thread titles I have seen on this wonderful site of over reaction.
