The changing of his mechanics comes in the off-season. I think his personal quarterback coach has tried to fix his mechanics.
I guess we can all agree to disagree when a guy like Hack should have been drafted. Many times you don't have the option when you are in need of a position, like he will be there in the third or 4th etc. But everyone is entitled to their opinion. But to label him a bust after a bad game, and make no mistake he made a bunch of mistakes, but sure as shit so did most of that pathetic offense. Or worse to doubt that some of the mechanics can never be corrected...well that is laughable. I have been watching Goff and Wentz go thru similar horror stories but since they were not projects that is ok I presume.....sheer nonsense. I believe Mac knew exactly what he was getting, and the work needed ahead of him. A similar progression as with Petty. And the same stupid comments were offered about him last year. Wasted pick. This is way too fucking early for anyone to define someone a bust, or a wasted pick, ..get over it. If one of these two guys makes it will be the best pick ever, no matter which round. And the notion that NE would never have picked him in the second, but may be in the 4th....LMFAO. NE is a lot of things, but a wizard in the draft is not one of them. They stepped into it with Brady and people have been kissing their assess ever since.
Yes after the semester ended at PSU, Hack worked with a personal QB coach and began making some of the necessary changes, but amidst having to learn the Jets offense, read more complex NFL Ds, and adjust to the speed of the NFL, his focus was on those things and not his mechanics. One really cannot focus on mechanics and performing/executing plays at the same time. We all know that players can't think too much on the field. It slows them down and they make mistakes. They have to play off of instinct and rhythm. They can't do that well when they're struggling with mechanics. I truly believe his mechanics will get fixed during the offseason, and we will see a much different/better QB next season.
So a kid at 18 plays in a natural pocket system and excels, then a coach in year 2 screws up his natural ability and fucks up his mechanics, changes the whole system, and now he is doomed for ever? Apparently there is an irreversible football congenital transformation that occurs. A bad coach can screw up a talented kid , but a good coach can not improve bad habits at age 20. Really now? Most pro athletes over and over find ways to improve their mechanics each and every year. From Jerry Rice to Carson Palmer to many others spend their off season with a coach honing their technic, changing little things that improve their situation awareness , delivery, foot work and speed, or what ever else they need. This kid has youth and character and raw talent on his side, not to mention good coaching. I'm willing to give him every chance.
At least you are entitled to an opinion. Time will tell the truth about Hack, and then we will see who is right, and who is wrong. Some people can see the truth now, some cannot. So keep laughing your ass of until then.
I'm as critical as Hack as anybody. But I don't think you can point to any single player and go, "You'll make it" or "You won't." There are no preordered habits or aspects of Hackenberg's career so far you can point to that will guarantee his failure 100%. The future is an unknowable quality you can't put your finger on. But he either makes it or he doesn't.
There's a portion of the fan base that despite complaining about the lack of QB...some how also never want the Jets to actually draft or sign anyone for the position. Come draft season...it doesn't seem to matter who the QB prospect is or what round we are talking about...they don't want us touching them w/ a 10 foot pole. I'm not sure if its being too selective, fear of repeated failure or just sheer ignorance but many seem to subscribe to the notion that the answer to all the QB woes is going to magically fall from the sky. Fact is...every QB prospect has risks attached to them..at some point Gms have to weave through all the information & show some conviction for someone. For all the criticisms of Hack....there is also some things to like...things that cannot be taught or replicated. I think when you've gone as long as the Jets have without an answer at QB...you have to get creative & try different methods of personnel selection as well as development. Hackenburg is just another example of this. The gripes about it being a 2nd round pick perhaps are somewhat founded...but w/ the Jets success rate in the 2nd round(or lack thereof) combined w/ the chronic QB issues...I guess I'm ok w/ the steep price based on both the upside of the player as well as the potential yield given the position he plays.
Good post. Too bad some posters think they know everything and their minds are locked shut. I wish we could fire them as fans or trade them to another team. IMO they're a bunch of losers and deserve to have to watch the Rick Kotite-coached Jets for the rest of eternity.
Very nicely said. Unfortunately getting the franchise QB for any team is the roughest road in the NFL. More often than not is a combination of talent evaluation, being in the right place at the right time and on the right year of the draft, and an awfull lot of luck. But not trying each and every year to pick one prospect till you find the right guy is unacceptable. Not giving the prospect a chance to at least develop is idiotic by any standard.
