I think Thompkins is safe until smith comes back simply because of his experience.

The Patriots will sign him and he'll kill us for years.

    definitely not an automatic.
I think he has pretty good odds at the 53 for week 1 tho, while Smith is on the PUP.
when Smith comes back, the Jets might have a difficult decision on their hands.

likewise, the young guys need to show something on specials, to make sure they make the team and stay on it..
    i hope they do.

I agree. I wonder about Bowles' preferences, however. Last year, he seemed to feel more comfortable with vets over rookies in some situations. That may be just because it was his rookie year as a HC, may be that it was just in those specific player instances, or perhaps just "seemed" that way, but he doesn't really lean that way.

Yeah, that could definitely be a tough decision, especially if Marshall is playing well on specials and/or as a receiver and Peake is continuing to look good in practice or the chances he gets. I'd hate for them to try to sneak either onto the PS, because I don't think they'd make it. Would they favor these two over Smith and put him on IR for the year? I hope it will be a hard choice for them. That will mean that they're high on all three and the rookies are doing well.

If all three of those WRs could pan out, the Jets could be set at the position for years and have some real targets for Hack or Petty.

Absolutely think it had a lot to do with Bowles being a rookie last year. He already has shown a differnce with Jenkins this camp. Plus I don't recall the CS passing over talent like Peake and Marshall last year. Both guys had mid round grades but fell as gifts to the Jets.

We'll have to see if Bowles takes a jump from year one to year two, and this is one of the things I'm going to look for. I think he'll make the correct moves in playing the best player, whether they're due $15 million and in their 10th year or a 6th round rookie.

I also fully expect him to improve in his challenges, and stop chasing points, as well as improve his half-time adjustments. I thought he did a great job at this for most of the season, until he stubbornly left Revis out to dry against Buffalo, which was really a big step back.

I've always been a bit of a homer about head coaches, but I have a really good feeling about Bowles and Maccagnan. Hope it's not the homerism speaking this time.

explain to me the "stop chasing points" criticism...

also he only threw 5 challenge flags all season. Is your issue with those 5 or that he should've thrown more? One of the things I liked about him is that he didn't throw a challenge flag every time he got upset like our previous coach did and we were actually able to have timeouts left in the 4th quarter

Fat Rex would waste 2 timeouts in the 3rd quarter of every game on defense

And usually he would blow two in the first on offense

Is there any shot Ross Martin beating out Nick Folk?

I think he definitely has a shot. Folk is due over $3 mill. Martin would get peanuts. That alone plays in his favor big time.

If Bowles chooses Martin he'd better be sure Martin is good enough. 3M isn't worth losing a game on a missed FG.

    or a missed PAT..

    i don't think Martin has a shot.
No coach would be comfortable with a rookie PK over a proven vet, unless he was blowing it away in the competition, which hasn't happened.

ehh. Folk can miss field goals just as much as Martin can. These days all NFL kickers are pretty good. What's the league average like 80-something percent? That makes Folk about an average kicker. We'll see how he does in preseason but I'm confident myself that Martin can be an average kicker. Its not like the decision revolves around losing a great kicker. We lost Folk to injury last year, signed a guy off the street and he was basically the same as Folk anyway.

If they can save $3m I would, especially since that money would be freed up by the end of TC when other teams are cutting players and you might be able to pick up a good final cut from another team. I'd rather have an interesting RT prospect for example than the slim difference Folk brings over Martin.

that's an interesting thought on D Smith.
if the other guys are playing well, i certainly wouldn't rush him back from the ACL, which was only torn in December.
believe they can stretch the PUP out for 5 or more weeks after the initial mandatory 6 weeks, giving them plenty of time on a decision (Nov/Dec)..

agree on hoping it's a hard choice, as that would mean the other guys are doing something right.

The Folk hero has won many games for the Jets. Not sure if we were in the same situation in a lot of our games where we needed a kicker to win it. Compared to Geno's rookie season where we won a lot of games in the last min.

I would love to know the last time a team picked up a guy off waivers who was a 7th round pick (in his rookie season) ... I honestly think Peake would be safe on the practice squad. I could be wrong. I think we go with B,M, Decker, Enunwa, Thompkins, Ross, Marshall with Smith on the PUP
