Do you enjoy never having a solid plan at QB? That's the big deal. Sent from my KIW-L24 using Tapatalk
I don't think Petty makes it out of camp. Fitz(1) starts, Geno(2) holds the clipboard and Hack(3) learns. Next year Hack(1) starts, Fitz(3) holds the clipboard and Geno is gone and a new number 3 comes in.
I think its Geno. The Jets gave him a long look. As a four year pro who has a few seasons starting under his belt his time to assume the role of starter was now. They decided to bring Fitz back instead. The Jets will move on from him because he is not in their future plans. When Petty was drafted Mac (and all the analysts) said it would be a few seasons before Petty fully understands a pro style system but once learned he has the skills and intangibles to be a solid pro. He is only in the second year of that development. They may decide to carry four, or they may roll with Fitz and the kids and if Fitz gets injured and will be injured more than a few games have Petty or Hack start a game while they bring in a stop-gap journeyman. Maybe even bring Geno back as I dont think he has many fans in the NFL and may be a free agent anyway.
Petty has to prove his worth, otherwise he's getting cut and I will look to draft someone in the 4th round next season. If he gets better, I will put him on the IR. However, he needs to considerably close that gap. God forbid Hack is better then Petty, then Petty is absolutely getting cut.
That doesnt even begin to make sense. Im not rooting for it, but injuries happen and you cant predict them. Neither hack nor petty are even close to being ready to play. So why would you cut the only other qb on the roster whos been in the system with starting experience? Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
Getting rid of Geno risks putting Hack or Petty under center after one bad play. Indications are they're not ready yet, and the Jets don't seem keen on feeding them to the wolves. Fitzpatrick is a bridge to the future and Geno is the suspension keeping that bridge up while the Jets cross it. Sent from my KIW-L24 using Tapatalk
I dont get why people are having such a hard time getting this. It isnt even about whether or not you like Geno or Fitzpatrick. Its about what makes sense for the team now and future. Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
Fitz and Geno will both be gone after the season. They roll into 2017 with Petty, Hack, and a safe average veteran. best man wins
Im sure he'll get to compete in TC. No reason to cut him now. If he impresses enough they could decide to move on from Geno and keep Petty. But I think the likely outcome is that he doesn't, the Jets like Hack, and decide Petty doesn't have a long term future here and that they might as well move on now and keep some experience on their bench with Geno.
It may be "unusual" to carry 4 QB's into the regular season, but since we don't have a clear long-term solution at this point, why not? QB is the most important position, and we really don't know at this point who will turn out the best among Geno, Hack, and Petty. It may take another couple years to evaluate those guys properly (except maybe Geno; if he doesn't show more consistency in the preseason, he's been in the league long enough now that he may never improve substantially if he doesn't show it now with this outstanding supporting cast...
I agree. The only way I see Fitz being back next year is on another 1 year deal and with the expectation of starting again. Otherwise the team will move on. Sent from my KIW-L24 using Tapatalk
If he was serious about retiring this year i could see them talking him into being the backup and taking more of teacher role. Outside of this Obi Wan Kenobi type situiation i agree with you.
If the Jets cut Petty and he is claimed off waivers, they could enter next offseason with only Hackenberg definitively under contract for 2017, as Fitz and Geno will both be free agents. So I think they find a way to keep Petty.
I think they keep all 4. I definitely don't think Petty gets cut either. It makes sense. Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
I agree with that. I think the Jets are in a draft a QB (nearly) each year until you find your guy and it just seems too soon to release Petty. Thats why the question was who will the Jets cut and I said Geno because I think they are finished with the Geno project.
I dont think they are. I think had the team performed worse regardless of stats or whos fault, Fitzpatrick wouldnt be back. I think the only reason hes back is because they want to keep continuity and build. To me it seems like they know hes not the answer and theyre not sure if theres one on the roster. This schedule is a lot more difficult so i dont expect the same results regardless of who starts honestly. I said before i have week one as a loss against Cincy. Its just not a good matchupbfornus in the beginning of the year. Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
Hell on Wheels is over and so is the need for an NFL team to carry a full time no run/no catch/sometimes block FB.
