I agree. Even if you have faith in Geno (based on what?), he didn't play last year so there will be a learning curve. They'll start 1 and 3 and we'll hear "Geno didn't play for year so he's off to a slow start but is improving week by week". BS. They missed the playoffs by one game last year so starting Smith will cause a regression. Fitz is a B-/C+ QB but he's the best possible QB. The veterans on the team deserve the best option, not a fallback option. So do we.
Based on what? He didn't play at all last year. Two years ago when he did play he was throwing to a group of practice squad players, not Marshall and Decker. We have this year in Forte added one of the best pass-catching backs in history to make life even easier for him. All that said, he played so bad two years ago that even if he ends up being below-average that is an improvement. Obviously he's not the ideal option, and its far from assured that he will play any better, but its absurd to think he has no chance of being better then the dog-shit he was 2 years ago.

I think people are forgetting Geno was the preferred and number 1 QB before he got injured. Bowles intended to go into the year with Geno as the QB. However, Fitz performed better than they expected of him, and we were winning, so Bowles took the safe option of not rocking the boat. Geno will perform fine when given the chance, and I think Bowles is backing this.
It's a favor to no one to be the starting QB on this team for the first 6 games on the schedule this year. The best you can hope for is not to be benched.
after all this time, we finally have a regime that thinks long term, not short term fix. rolling with geno this year to properly evaluate him is the smart move. spending insane money on fitz is dumb, because last year , 10 wins, was his upside. and, that was with a weak schedule , afc south and nfc east. if you get your wish and they do something stupid like sign fitz, 8-8 is the upside and anywhere from 4-12 to 6-10 is more likely. fitz does not have the arm required to earn a playoff slot, much less do anything once you get there.
Nor does he have the arm strength or judgment to beat the tough Ds we'll be facing this year. We finally have a regime that thinks long term, and our fan base mostly thinks short term. It figures with the Jets. I just hope that Woody will ignore the short-sighted fanbase and trust Mac.
