There's no way Ryan Fitzpatrick is worth 2 wins over Geno. 1 win you might get me to agree but 2 wins suggests a level of play that Fitzpatrick has never shown, including last year. People forget that the Jets went 8-8 with Geno making every rookie mistake in the book. If the Jets defense is good this year they're going to win 7 games on that basis alone. Adding either Fitzpatrick or Geno to the equation doesn't do much to improve that based on what we know.
Geno went 8-8 his rookie year out of dumb luck. The Jets would alternate between winning squeakers and getting blown out. The point differential was at the bottom of the league and typical of a 4-12 team.
And your point is? The Jets went 8-8 with rookie Geno at QB (with almost no talent at WR BTW) because they got lucky and faced a fairly weak schedule. Last year the Jets went 10-6 with Fitzpatrick at QB (with as much talent at WR as the team has ever put on the field) because they got lucky and faced a weak schedule. If Geno had Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker as his tandem in 2013 and the Jets 2015 defense he'd probably have gone 9-7 at worst. There's no way Ryan Fitzpatrick is 2 wins better than Geno in isolation. He's just not that good a QB. That's the point.
Honestly, if the Jets survive this schedule they are super bowl bound. This seasons looks to be rough. Not a Jets friendly schedule at all. Of the first 9 games, 6 are on the road. plus we play the cheating pats twice. 7-9 ho - hum season My only wish is decaptiation of every opposing qb and Brady especially. Let's go defense! New Young lbs penetrating gaps
My point is that saying that Geno went 8-8 his rookie year is very misleading. Even with the easy schedule, that team (and Geno was a big reason why), would've been much closer to 4-12 than 8-8 had you run the season multiple times. So if you were to give Geno Marshall and Decker and redo the 2013 season with the same schedule, you'd probably get a worse record than 8-8.
If bolded materializes, Jets will have extra 2-3 possessions per game and this should translate into more wins. So... if D shows up, we might have a shot at PO.
I didn't say give him Marshall and Decker. I said give him Marshall and Decker and the Jet's 2015 defense. And, no, he wouldn't have been closer to 4-12 than 8-8 with that trifecta in place. The thing people don't really realize about last year is how lucky the Jets really were for a lot of the season. We had that silly turnover ratio at the start when we got out to 4-1 and then we faced a bunch of teams in a row that were going through problems at the end when we went 5-0 before the Bills game. Fins, Titans, Giants and Cowboys were a schedule made to order for the Jets when the games happened. The Patriots at MetLife were a handful to take on but then Belichik fumbled the OT call and made everything right for the Jets in the end. 2015 was a product of a lot of luck in play for the Jets juxtaposed against a weak schedule. Same as 2013 except the Jets best receiver in 2013 was Jeremy Kerley and the Jets defense was the worst of the decade that year.
Throw in the 2015 defense plus Marshall and Decker in a re-run of 2013 and Geno probably goes closer to 8-8 than 4-12. But he wouldn't have gone 10-6 because his QB play was horrible. And Marshall and Decker wouldn't have made enough of a difference to make his play decent.
He went 8-8 with Kerley and a cast of thousands at WR and a Jets defense that was noticeably deficient except on the LOS. I doubt your premise.
Geno had Marshall Decker and the 2015 defense and he sht the bed in Oakland After that Fitz went on to give us come from behind wins plus victories over NYG and NE Find the $ and pay the man. He deserves it, Its not a 100 million but a few million. Fitz has leveredge...if the Jets just go with Geno and continue to lose they've opted for a very poor decision
The receivers were bad and the defense was mediocre. But I've already explained why the 8-8 argument is misleading. And really, using W-L to evaluate a QB is a futile endeavor. Look at Geno's numbers/tape and maybe say they would've been better with a better supporting cast. But the team's record is a real red herring.
And Fitzpatrick shit the bed against the Eagles, the Bills twice and the Texans. Look I'm not arguing that Geno is a good QB. I'm just saying that anybody who thinks the Jets are winning anything next year because they have Fitzpatrick at QB is not looking at all the facts. He'd be very entertaining to watch, as he was this year, but he's a mediocre QB and there's no way he's two games better than Geno Smith in a vacuum, this including the salient fact that Geno is not a good QB either.
Talent aside, Fitz wins because the clubhouse respects him and wants him back. We all don't live in a vaccum and personality, smarts and leadership ability counts heavy in this league. Fitz won more games than he lost and played his heart out with come from behind victories. No one wants to give the guy credit with some skillfull play (entertainment lol).... Well as Namath found out it is all entertainment I guess I respect the fact that you want to have the team start from scratch with Geno who was supposed to be the 2015 QB. The FO is apparently on this side as well....I am numb to all this right now SMH
There are only 16 games in a season. It's really hard to be good or bad enough to individually account for 2 of them. That's just reality. You have to be a superstar or an all-time wretch to be worth 2 games in the standings even at QB. Then, you have to look at who you are replacing. Ryan Fitzpatrick is a mediocrity. He's never been a good QB and he's only been an average QB in a few seasons of his career, including last season. He's fun to watch and he has the leadership thing down (except when he's running like a fool and getting hurt in the process). However he's not going to win the Jets any games that the rest of the team hasn't already set up to win. There wasn't a single game last year where the team just wasn't ready to go and Fitzpatrick picked them up, put them on his shoulders and carried them to a win. Same thing is true for Geno. The team is going to win or lose based on whether they're ready to play the game and then whether they outplay the other team. There are no miracles here from either guy and no big difference in the W-L total at the end of the day based on their performance as the QB. The Jets don't win that Raiders game last year even if Fitzpatrick avoids getting creamed and knocked out of the game (leadership?). They lost the game based on the defense not being ready to roll on the day, the biggest likely factor being that Calvin Pryor was injured and they were playing Marcus Williams at SS for most of the game, his first substantial exposure at the position in the NFL.
Fitz does have the locker room behind him, I think that's an underrated factor. Remember when Woodson drilled him in the Raiders game and Geno came in? The last time I saw an entire sideline slump their shoulders in unison like that was when Vinny tore his achilles. Even Geno's head cheerleader Brandon Marshall. It was that moment I realized that nobody on that team believes in Geno Smith.
I don't think this is an unreasonable take, I just disagree on the number of games Geno loses you. The guy is not a leader of men by any stretch of the imagination, has little to no awareness of game situations or pocket presence and is inconsistent in his accuracy. You can live with one or maybe two of those at the QB position if the team is generally good around him, but not all three. Fitz may not be elevating the team to another level but he's also not an anchor like I believe Geno is.
