I don't think he's ever been at risk of getting suspended He's an advocate for players to use marijuana instead of opiate painkillers for injuries...he's not saying players should be able to smoke weed for the hell of it He said that he's sick of seeing friends and teammates become addicted to painkillers even after their playing career is over...I think Ray Lucas had a huge problem with this exact issue Everything I've heard says Monroe is a great character guy and family man in the locker room and off the field... I won't disagree with the rest of your post but I just wanted to point out that Monroe seems to be a great guy that doesn't have issues with drugs himself Some NFL teams don't like outspoken players that want to change the status quo for the better...rather have a bunch of robots and yes men that bash their brains in till they can't anymore....sad but true
Thanks for the info. I stand corrected. I jumped to the conclusion that since he was an advocate for marijuana and had been released Ravens, it must be because he was also a user and was at risk for suspension. For the record, I would have no problem with the NFL allowing players to use marijuana if it was legalized. That would be better than the opiate addictions. The NFL can't go against state and national laws, however. They also couldn't allow players in Denver to use it, but not players in Carolina or elsewhere where it was against state law. If he's such a high character guy, I'm shocked that the Ravens would have released him. They either must have some good tackles in the wings where they didn't really need him or have an owner that's particularly resistant to any controversy.
There's a good deal of merit in what Monroe advocates. Some players have been harmed far worse by opiates, and their abuse, than they ever conceivably could be by marijuana. The problem is that for the league it would be a slippery slope. The NFL can't mandate marijuana use for pain management across the board when the drug is still illegal in most states.
he aint coming here, he said he wants to play left tackle, not right , so there goes that , ciga-weed
We've got contract disputes with two key players already and no cap room. There's no room for another underachiever. Sent from my KIW-L24 using Tapatalk
Why not? They could simply remove any and all NFL rules on Marijuana, which would create exactly that case.
Having Eugene Monroe at RT and Ryan Clady at LT would be really nice; but he will eventually sign a contract out of our price range. If we are talking about giving OTs a one year prove-it deal, then we could look into Jake Long (31), who claims to be finally healthy. Cutting Breno Giacomini (31) would give us $5,000,000 in cap savings; half of this would probably be enough to sign Jake Long for a year (last season he played on a one-year, $1,568,750 contract with the Atlanta Falcons). So we would save a litte bit money and possibly upgrade the position.
Several states have already approved medical marijuana for pain THC under Drs supervision is fine by me but its an NFL image issue I suppose
Exactly. Jake Long was one of the very best OT in the league (4× Pro Bowl from 2008-2011) before injuries (back-to-back seasons with torn ACLs) derailed his career. But talent and attitude shouldn't be an issue for someone like him - and this fact alone brings some upside. Long is the same age as Breno Giacomini, would be cheaper and I don't think he would play worse.
Clearly NFL teams know something about the extent of his injuries that we don't know. A former number one overall pick should get work, especially after his early success. He really fell off and I'm not nearly as confident with a player like him than I am Monroe. And there is no way you cut Breno and start Long his injury history is bad. Maybe if he comes very cheap give him an opportunity to show if he has anything left but I don't see a swap Breno for Long like I would Breno for Monroe. Unfortunately Monroe has said he wants to play on the left side which is a shame because he would be a really nice addition.
Breno is a joke. He watches the game from the best seat in the house. This is the best he has ever looked:
