There is the element of "well he's Harvard educated" so Fitzpatrick is "obviously a smart player" that gets so overstated. He's certainly a smart man but that doesn't mean he is a smart football player. You are right he does make a lot of poor reads and has some bonehead decision making. If he went to Arizona State, like he wanted to, instead of Harvard, I don't think he'd be seen around the fanbase as a smart football player. People would probably be calling him a dumb QB actually for things like tossing it up for grabs into tight coverage in FG range in the 4th quarter, down by 2, and getting it picked off (like he did in Buffalo), among other things like his reluctance to slide.
