Totally agree on Zac Stacy--don't save roster spot for him, and, for God's sake, don't have him returning kickoffs again
Roster numbers for the rookies (per Cimini) Jets rookie uniform numbers (subject to change): Lee 50, Hackenberg 5, Jenkins 48, Burris 38, Shell 72, Edwards 4, Peake 17. Hackenberg inherits the jersey of the mighty Brooks Bollinger.
To me the assignment of numbers in preseason is meaningless - many duplicates with a 90 man squad Will look to drill into the areas that are most prone to cuts or FA pick ups between here and August to see if Mac fills any perceived holes on the roster My areas that Jets need players to step up most and rationale for same follow QB - No clear starter currently on roster WR - No obvious depth behind starting WR's (Marchall & Decker) - Smith's injury holds him back OL - Tons of quantity - is there quality?????? DL - will Mo become a distraction LB - will they gel as quickly as their 40 times? CB - How many CBs / Ss will be kept or will it be a range from DBs
First trimming already taking place Sean Hickey & Joe Anderson Hickey who has bounced around since going undrafted last year has been cut 06/05. Articles said Jets were potential landing spot and showed interest last year. He was in the Saints camp last year and made it to final cuts. Joe Anderson WR - Bowles said it was very difficult this week to cut wide receiver Joe Anderson, who was only on the Jets since December. Anderson made a name for himself last year by holding a sign outside of the Texans’ headquarters asking for a job. Realise the consensus is probably "Who Cares" but shows that maybe our depth on is better than we thought as both was signed to a future reserve contracts in January and are cut after day 1 of rookie mini-camp.
Following first two days of rookie mini-camp I have made a few changes to the make-up of the tiers, ACCEPT THIS IS BASED 100% ON MY SUBJECTIVE OPINION QB – No Changes - If Fitz resigned would have major impact, see new note added RB – No Changes, Beckham’s cousin not getting too many reps but may make Tier 4 even though he fumbled on the first carry WR - Quenton Bundrage & Robbie Anderson both upgraded to Tier 3 - both have speed and height on their side – showed nice hands during rookie minicamp working well with Hackenberg. OL – No Changes – Shell could be upgraded further during camp after some positive comments by Bowles, would have significant impact on Dozier, Harrison and Winters chances of making the squad TE – No Changes DL – No Changes – Pelon had a good showing but questionable opposition LB – multiple changes Freddie Bishop upgraded to Tier 3 - a good camp would see on final squad of 53 Trevor Reilly and Bruce Carter downgraded to Tier 3 - Bowles did not rule bringing Calvin Pace back- acknowledged a lot of speed there but not experience – if it happens would impact who keeps their spot CB – No changes – heard the tier 4 guys were getting burnt by the WR’s who were upgraded resulting in Bowles refusing to close door on a Cromartie return – if it happens could impact who keeps their spot although we carried 7 CBs last year S – No Changes but consider Middleton could move to Tier 3 and end up on PS Try out Peni Vea, S 6'1" 205lbs who had an interception and has speed - 4.45 40 time - may have done enough to displace someone else
Minor change on the fringe following try-outs at rookie mini camp SIGNED - Bryson Keeton, CB — 6-2 190 Montana State Bakersfield, CA signed - assigned to Tier 4 Waived - TE Adrien Robinson
Just got released, guess they liked what they are seeing out of Jalin Marshall and the other guys brought in to potentially be KR/PR.
being that mini camp is over and a couple of moves have been made--when do u we find out if guys like jalin marshall and Robbie Anderson and odell's cousin made it to camp ? were jalin and Robbie udfa ? and odell's cousin on a tryout ?
I am not looking at either based on their actual position but rather what I see and hear - ILBs on the roster are Harris, Lee, Henderson, Carter & Taiwan Jones - not sure how many we keep 3/4 but Jones is battling Carter for the 4th spot here if there is one -OLBs on the Roster Mauldin, Jenkins, Bishop, Reilly, Martin, Stanford & Howsware - here again the reason I think Reilly may be in trouble is Catapano was used at LB even though listed as a DE on the roster and we may look for more experience here and if we sign someone cut by someone else it is the 4th guys who are on the bubble - in this case Reilly & Carter who could be fighting for one spot. I like Reilly and his work on special teams too but he was an old rookie and as a 7th rounder is already doing well to be still here as Bowles looks to revamp the roster only Reilly and Harris left from the Rex days and speed is key. Will the Jets look at more hybrid safeties and DL and therefore reduce the number of LBs on the roster? Or add more experience making those here vulnerable to being cut? On the issue of waived / picked up The Jets on Monday announced that they claimed ex-Giants tight end Jerome Cunningham off waivers, while waiving running back/kickoff returner Dri Archer. Cunningham, who is 6-foot-3 and 250 pounds, went undrafted in 2013 and signed with the Giants in August of 2014. The Giants waived him last week. In between, he played in nine games last season and caught eight passes for 59 yards. Cunningham was mostly on the Giants' practice squad in 2014. In 2013, Cunningham got a tryout with the Colts at minicamp, but he didn't receive a contract offer. He was out of football during the 2013 season. Cunningham, who turns 25 later this month, played at Southern Connecticut State. The Jets signed Archer to a reserve/future contract in early February. It seemed his speed might be able to help the Jets on kickoff returns. But they apparently felt otherwise. In early April, they signed wide receiver Jeremy Ross, who can returns kickoffs and punts, which decreased their need to retain Archer. https://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/05/jets_claim_ex-giants_te_jerome_cunningham_waive_rb.html This also ignores the Marshall pick up as well as others who have speed to make a niche player like Archer redundant
well with that in mind, there is gonna be some tough cuts coming in august, this roster is pretty stacked, and if they release guys to clear them thru waivers so they can get on the practice squad then a few of them will get scooped up by other teams, I know that happens every year but team we have now is pretty damn good , not including the qb position , but I'm stoked for hackenberg, dude can learn the whole playbook in a month, that's how smart he is, and he can read a defense , and he throws lasers , he Fitzpatrick with a stronger arm
Exactly - in the list at the start you will see both Marshall and Anderson listed - they have signed UDFA contracts and are part of the 90 man squad - Beckham was a try out and having been out of the game for 5 years was a long shot - too much of a project to carry right now, not listed and therefore not signed.
yea I just read the jets have no plans to sign him, maybe it was cuz he fumbled on his first chance in mini camp lol
I'd like to see us keep some extra players on offense rather than in the defensive backfield. Powell went down and Ivory was a non factor vs. The Bills and we were essentially stuck with one runningback. I know Bowles loves his defensive backs but with versatile players like Pryor, Skrine and now Lee, I'd think we keep more skill position players (and maybe even keep one solely to return kicks; maybe Ross?).
I would have to think that unless Ross just really stinks it up during OTAs and TC or one of the rookies shows he can be a good returner, he's on the team. Surely they can't be thinking of having Stacy return kicks again. They also need depth at WR.
While I want to believe this, I'm going to believe it when I see it. Bowles has a lot of Bill Parcells in his approach to bldg a team, he likes Vets because of experience, even if they are not incredibly productive.
