Fair points. And I agree with your points about the schedule and all that. Maybe Fitz doesnt put up the same numbers this year because of the better teams we'll be playing against. But who knows? If we go with Geno and he crashes and burns is that gonna be the excuse that fans will use then? "The competition was too hard"? Doesnt sound like something that should be uttered in a league with such parity. Dont get me wrong, I dont want Fitz back for 15 mil a year either. But for 10 a year over 2 years would be fine with me , and I think it would be fine for him too if the team was offering that. Part of the reason we havent offered him even that though is because we're in cap hell. If we weren't I would think that Mac would've already given Fitz something close to what he's been asking for.
I'll go game by game Browns - Fitz was meh but the defense destroyed the Browns Colts - Defense won this game clearly holding the Colts to 7 points Eagles - Loss - Special teams ultimately failed us but Fitz had chances to lead us back or score more in the 1st half and didn't Dolphins Wembley - Ivory and defense won us this game clearly Redskins - All around easy win...Fitz played well but so did everyone Patriots AWAY - Loss but not gunna knock Fitz as he did OK in a tough game Raiders - Defense plays horrendous and Geno does not lead us to a comeback off the bench - plays OK overall but has a few dumb plays Jaguars - Fitz does good enough for us to win along with the rest of the team - nothing special here Bills home - Brutal 1st half from Fitz and not good enough to lead us back in the 2nd Texans - Similar to Bills Dolphins - Great game by Fitz but Dolphins are in freefall mode at this point and would have lost against even an average performance Giants - Meh, OK game against the worst defense in the league Titans - Defense destroys Titans allowing 8 points,Fitz does his job Cowboys - Offense struggles for most of the game but Fitz does well in the 4th quarter to get us in position to scrape by a bad Cowboys team Patriots HOME - Very good all around win, I'll give Fitz props for this game Bills AWAY - Choke job, terrible performance with all of the marbles on the line....Arm strength clearly a huge problem So yes, I believe that generally he was along for the ride vs this joke of a schedule....he had some good games but most of our wins were defense and/or running game driven. He also had a few games where even a decent QB performance or any kind of comeback would have won us the game and he couldn't get it done The slow starts and lack of comeback ability killed us all year....when we jumped out early and the defense forced turnovers we generally won....mostly along for the ride as I said
Nah I wouldn't use that excuse for either player....I'm just saying the schedule was so easy that our defense/running game won us most of the games that we did win last season. Very little pressure on Fitz last season to put up big points, and when there actually was, he was very hot and cold I don't mind seeing him come back on the cheap but it's not the direction I would go personally....but I get it if that's ultimately what happens I'm just saying that if Fitz was viewed as a mediocre starter he would have been offered 15 mil from someone.....he's not
It's very situational though. He obviously needs to be in a good situation to succeed because he has no deep ball, and is susceptible to throwing into coverage when he does try to throw down the field. He's not an all-world starter or even a pro bowler. BUT he's worlds above what Geno would be next season. The thing is, Fitz will be coming off his best season ever with a full training camp to prepare as the starter with virtually the same big time receivers and much better versatility out of the backfield. Scheduler gets tougher, supporting cast got arguably better (if Clady remains healthy). For shits and gigs... One way or another Fitz has lingered around the league ad a starter. True or false, Geno is a starting quarterback for at least five seasons in the NFL in one way or another?
The Jets should let both Ryan Fitzpatrick ( go with three Qb's- don't over pay him he isn't that good) and Muhammad Wilkerson ( rescind the tag) go. Why the Jets aren't going anywhere with that offense line, Qb , and against way tougher schedule.( beat two teams with a winning record last year). Everyone talks about that 30 million the Jets have , and they think they will be big players in Fa.( So many teams have way more than the Jets in cap space) . So I would save 15.7 million by rescinding Muhammad Wilkerson franchise tag, that I could roll over to next year cap. 30 million plus 15.7 million = 45.7 million cap space I would have to play with in Fa. ( that's before some cuts) . Once the Jets drafted Leonard Williams , Muhammad Wilkerson was gone.( they have a cheaper version for a longer period of time). They aren't signing him to longterm contract. Why pay Fitzpatrick when he is never going to take you where you want to go.( jets know this and can't cave on this position). The Jets are trying to rebuild and compete. I don't think you can do both. They have old roster that a lot of those guys are going to need to be replaced. Do you want Petty or Hackenberg having to play behind a bad offense line .( If you want to develop either one that offense line better be able to protect either one- they didn't do enough on the offense line this draft. Anyone who thinks the Jets can win 10 games next year are going to be in for a big disappointment. They aren't a playoff team, as so many teams in the Afc have improved way more than the Jets did.
So get rid of our high priced free agent so we have more money next year to give to high priced free agents. Solid plan bro
Rattled? After driving his team down the field towards the red zone? This is not a discussion fanboy, this is a reminder: "2nd year pro" Geno Smith was sitting in the catbird seat in his 3rd year only to repeat what makes Geno Smith the selfish, immature jerk that he is by welching on a $600 obligation. Note no one came to his defense least of all his understandably pissed off new coach who 1st order of business now had to shift to addressing the quarterback position. This "4th year" mental midget is nothing more than a temporary stopgap at best while they get a deal in place with the incumbent stopgap Ryan Fitzpatrick. While Genotards dream of a redemptive Rocky Balboa-type comeback, they refuse to read the tea leaves: this team so wants to move on from this stooge.
Oh my bad Fitz was so great between the 20's and then fuck it up in the redzone. So in your eyes that ok? If they want to move on so bad? Why didn't they just sign RG3? Hoyer? Or another QB then cut Geno? Some of you let your hate for Geno get in the way of thinking. Here BREAKING NEWS... Just because that what you want to happen doesn't mean it will.
Fitz' mind is CRAP. He graduated from Harvard and has a high wonderlic but his football smarts are average at best. This complete myth that Fitz is football smart is frankly ludicrous. The ONLY times he has been successful is under Gailey and what Gailey does with Fitz is treat him like an inexperienced, not football savvy player (which he is) Gailey basically strips out to the offense until all that is left are plays that have predetermined single reads with a checkdown. There is really nothing from a thought process for Fitz to do, except single reads to the best 1-2 receiving combo in the NFL. The reality is that Fitz is not a good QB. Even playing a historically easy schedule and against the lamest defenses in the NFL, Fitz threw 15 interceptions and was at or very near the botttom in dropped interceptions. He does not in any way shape or form make good decisions or play smart at QB
Im sure he was the only QB last season to have picks dropped by the opposing teams. DB's all of the sudden forget how to catch when they play the Jets. Something they had no problem with from 2009-2014 for some reason.
I might not word it as strongly as you did...but I tend to agree. Jet fans have been so numbed of late that even average QB play looks genius. It's also why this kid Hackenberg has got people's hopes high. Supposedly he's got football smarts, size and a lively arm. Let us pray.
You're grasping. Fitz threw 23 TD/1 INT inside the 20 last year. 13 touchdowns/0 picks inside the 10. What the hell are you talking about?
Personally, I'm sick of watching him checkdown to the RB for negative yardage just for the sake of having a high completion percentage. Instead of throwing it away or into the players feet, he'll throw it to the RB who is five yards behind the line of scrimmage that immediately is destroyed by a defender.
Don't speak for "what I want to happen" fanboy. Replacing the bum with a stiff like Hoyer isn't the answer either. The fact remains: the Jets have drafted QBs in consecutive drafts. Read the tea leaves.
Tajh Boyd? You think they had big plans for Tajh "7th rd." Boyd? Geno's a bum. He's acted like a bum from day one making a childish spectacle of himself at the draft and here it is year four and he's coming off a year in which he selfishly sabotaged things for a measly six hundred bucks. No right-thinking person should want to hand the keys to such an immature bum, and that doesn't even take his low football I.Q./poor pocket presence into consideration. He's a bum.
You're first part of the post I agree with but if you need to be in a great situation to even be marginal then you're not a good QB, period You have no clue if he would be better and either do I to be fair...We saw Geno as a rookie and a second year immature player in a screwed up situation to say the least with bums for receivers and offensive guru Rex as his head coach If he improved only marginally then yes Fitz would be better but his ceiling is much higher if he learned a lot last season and improved a lot....Having Marshall is such a big advantage for any QB I wonder how Fitzpatrick looked as a rookie if he even played? You're comparing a journeyman veteran to a rookie/2nd year player. It's now for Geno when QBs that take a longer time to develop could possibly put it all together
